Ultium-Based Chevy Equinox EV On The Way

General Motors is gearing up to release a swath of new all-electric vehicles in the next few years, with a total of 30 new EVs set to launch by 2025. Now, per statements made by General Motors President Mark Reuss, one of those new all-electric vehicles will be a Chevy Equinox EV variant based on GM’s Ultium technology.
2022 Chevy Equinox
During the recent GM Investor presentation, GM President Mark Reuss indicated that a new Ultium-based crossover model would be priced around $30,000. Reuss called the new model the Chevy Equinox EV, more or less confirming that such a vehicle was indeed in the works. There is currently no timeframe with regard to the release of the new Chevy Equinox EV.
Back in August, GM Authority covered a design patent that illustrates what is believed to be a next-generation Chevy Equinox EV crossover. The design patent shows the midsize crossover with a new platform, a new design, and new technologies. The design features a “closed” front end similar to the Chevy Bolt EV, Bolt EUV, and Cadillac Lyriq, as well as no exhaust system.
GM Ultium platform
For those readers who may be unaware, GM’s Ultium brand is used for both the automaker’s electric motor technology, as well as its battery technology. The Ultium platform is flexible and adaptable, providing the bones for a wide variety of vehicles and applications. For example, the platform has already been confirmed for use in the Cadillac Lyriq luxury crossover, the GMC Hummer EV Pickup and SUV off-roader, and the Cruise Origin driverless ride-sharing vehicle.
Meanwhile, GM’s Ultium battery technology provides the juice for the Ultium Drive platform, offering a wide range of power options, from 50 kWh to 200 kWh. GM estimates ranges up to 400 miles per charge and acceleration to 60 mph in as little as 3 seconds depending on the application, as well as Level 2 and DC fast charging capabilities.
2022 Chevy Equinox
The current Chevy Equinox crossover is offered with a single powertrain option, namely the turbocharged 1.5L I4 LYX gasoline engine rated at 170 horsepower and 203 pound-feet of torque.
