The fully refreshed 2022 GMC Sierra 1500 is here, breaking cover with a long list of changes and updates over the preceding 2021 model year and pre-refresh Sierra 1500 Limited. Highlights include new exterior styling, a completely overhauled cabin, and powertrain improvements, as well as the addition of the AT4X off-roader and range-topping Sierra Denali Ultimate.
Let’s start outside, where we find the refreshed 2022 GMC Sierra 1500 receives a new front end consisting of revisions to the front bumper, grille, and headlights. The new headlights house dual-projector LEDs and reshaped C-shaped lighting signatures, while animated lighting sequences activate when the driver is walking towards or away from the vehicle, as well as on vehicle start. The 2022 Sierra also offers new wheel designs for SLT and Denali trims, while three new optional exterior paint options (Titanium Rush Metallic, Dynamic Blue Metallic, Desert Sand Metallic) join the lineup.
One of the most important updates for the refreshed 2022 GMC Sierra 1500 is inside the cabin, where we find a completely overhauled cockpit design. The new interior addresses criticisms levied against the pickup since the introduction of the 2019 model year, while also incorporating a wealth of new technologies. Highlights here include an all-new 13.4-inch infotainment screen and 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster as standard on SLE and above, plus a new center console, Electronic Precision Shift for models with front bucket seats (column shift available for models with a front bench seat), and standard power-adjustable steering column for up-level trims.
To note, all models in the refreshed 2022 GMC Sierra 1500 lineup are equipped with the new interior design, with the exception of the base-model GMC Sierra Pro (previously known simply as the “Sierra,” now renamed as the Pro trim level).
Further tech highlights include built-in Google compatibility standard on all models except Pro, as well as GM’s Super Cruise semi-autonomous drive system with trailering capabilities included as standard on 2022 GMC Sierra Denali Ultimate.
The powertrain lineup mirrors that of the fully refreshed 2022 Chevy Silverado 1500, with the turbocharged 2.7L I4 L3B gasoline engine included as standard with 20-percent more torque, up to 420 pound-feet. Peak power ratings for the L3B are unchanged, rated at 310 horsepower, although trailering ratings get a boost to 9,600 pounds for two-wheel drive models and 9,300 pounds for four-wheel drive models.
Models equipped with the 3.0L I6 LM2 turbodiesel Duramax are also offered with the max tow package, which boosts max tow ratings to 13,200 pounds.
The rest of the powertrain lineup consists of the naturally aspirated 5.3L V8 L84 gasoline engine and naturally aspirated 6.2L V8 L87 gasoline engine. The naturally aspirated 4.3L V6 LV3 gasoline engine and naturally aspirated 5.3L V8 L82 gasoline engine are no longer offered.
