Relive The Refreshed 2022 GMC Sierra Reveal: Video

Earlier this month, GMC revealed the refreshed 2022 Sierra 1500 pickup truck. The focus of the reveal was to underscore how GMC has upped game by taking its top luxury and off-road models up a notch, introducing the first-ever Sierra Denali Ultimate and Sierra AT4X.

“GMC is premium strength, power, capability, technology, and innovation unmatched in the industry,” the host – actor Will Arnett – narrates to shots of different GMC vehicles driving in various conditions at the beginning of the nearly 16-minute video. “Sierra, the best-selling GMC vehicle in the U.S. Denali, the ultimate expression of professional grade – the pinnacle of our craft. AT4, a groundbreaker in the premium off-road space.”

After the intro, the video then highlights the features and capabilities of the new top two trim levels of GMC’s light duty full-size pickup truck.

“Our time has come, to elevate refinement with our most advanced and luxurious pickup ever, to elevate technology, to elevate capability, all to enable Sierra customers to do more than ever before with the most premium truck GMC has ever offered.”

First up is the first-ever 2022 GMC Sierra Denali Ultimate.

“Yes, Denali Ultimate,” Arnett adds, “a remarkable evolution of first-class luxury and unrivaled technology, including Super Cruise which allows you to drive hands-free on compatible roads – but more on that later.”

That feature is so important that the one-minute-long commercial currently airing for the new 2022 GMC Sierra focuses on the GM Super Cruise semi-autonomous drive system with trailering capabilities, which is standard on the Sierra Denali Ultimate. During the commercial, the driver activates Super Cruise, which allows him to remove his hands from the steering wheel and start playing a beat by slapping his thighs and clapping to Queen’s “We Will Rock You” as the soundtrack.

But back to the reveal video.

“The team at GMC studies truck customers like I study my character going into a new show,” Arnett continues. “They learn many customers simply want the best of the best, the ultimate reward for their work and achievements in life. This truck is all that and more.”

The 2022 GMC Sierra Denali Ultimate is set apart from the rest of the lineup thanks to unique exterior styling, including a unique grille treatment finished in exclusive Vader chrome. The new grille is complemented by further Vader chrome details, such as the GMC logo, as well as unique front fender trim featuring Mount Denali. The corners of the 2022 Sierra Denali are filled by exclusive 22-inch wheels finished in Low Gloss Black with machined accents, while the rear of the pickup features the six-way configurable GMC MultiPro tailgate. Power assist steps are equipped as standard.

In addition to the advanced GM Super Cruise system, the 2022 GMC Sierra Denali Ultimate is also equipped with a variety of exclusive high-end materials, such as full-grain leather upholstery and open-pore Paldao wood trim, plus leather-trimmed pieces for the instrument panel, door panels, and console lid, and a premium microsuede headliner. A (single-pane) power sunroof is standard.

Drivers can endure long trips with the Sierra Denali Ultimate’s all-new best-in-class 16-way power-adjustable and massaging front seats, while music is delivered via an all-new 12-speaker Bose Premium series sound system with Center Point surround technology with AudioPilot and a rich bass woofer.

The standard engine spec for the 2022 GMC Sierra Denali Ultimate includes the naturally aspirated 6.2L V8 L87 gasoline engine, rated at 420 horsepower and 460 pound-feet of torque. It connects to GM’s 10-speed automatic transmission with Electronic Precision Shift, as well as four-wheel drive and an electronically controlled two-speed transfer case, all as standard. Denali Premium Suspension with Adaptive Ride Control is also standard, and is a class exclusive.

Even bigger news for SLE trim levels and above (Elevation, SLT, AT4, Denali) is the completely overhauled cabin. The new interior addresses criticisms levied against the pickup since the introduction of the 2019 model year, while also incorporating a wealth of new technologies.

Highlights here include an all-new 13.4-inch infotainment screen and 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, plus a new center console, Electronic Precision Shift for models with front bucket seats (column shift is available for models with a front bench seat), and standard power-adjustable steering column for up-level trims. Further tech highlights include built-in Google compatibility, with Google Maps even providing Super Cruise-enabled routes for those models equipped with the semi-autonomous drive system.

Adding to the two information screens mentioned above, the 2022 GMC Sierra Denali Ultimate features a 15-inch head-up display, for a combined total of over 40 diagonal inches of combined driver-focused digital displays – the most in its class, according to GMC. The Denali Ultimate also features the Rear Camera Mirror feature.

After going over the top features of the Sierra Denali Ultimate, the host then moves on the first-ever 2022 GMC Sierra AT4X, which takes the brand’s off-road capable AT4 to the next level. It is GMC’s equivalent to the new 2022 Chevy Silverado ZR2.

“The first-ever Sierra AT4X delivers extreme off-road capability in a rugged, yet ultra-premium package,” he says. “The AT4X builds upon the success of the wildly popular AT4, which is attracting new and younger customers to GMC. In fact, over half of AT4 buyers are new to the brand.”

The 2022 GMC Sierra AT4X comes equipped with unique Multimatic DSSV spool-valve dampers – the same as the ones used on the Chevy Colorado ZR2 and Silverado ZR2. These dampers are matched with unique springs, the combination of which increase the maximum front suspension travel by 50mm and rear suspension travel by 25mm, as compared to the regular Sierra AT4.

The Sierra AT4X also comes with the same powertrain setup as the Denali Ultimate, but adds multiple driving modes such as Terrain Mode for one-pedal rock crawling capabilities. Additionally it features front and rear e-locking differentials, while unique chassis and suspension tuning make the most of onboard components, with the transfer case protected by a unique steel skid plate. Payload capacity is set at 1,420 pounds, while max trailering rating is 8,900 pounds.

The cabin space is decked out with a unique “Obsidian Rush” interior treatment, which incorporates premium leather upholstery with white piping and red stitching. The luxurious leather is complemented by Vanta ash wood trim, while 16-way power adjustable and massaging front seats, a microsuede headliner, 15-inch head-up display, and 12-speaker Bose sound system keep it comfortable and connected.

Outside, the Sierra AT4X rolls on a set of black 18-inch wheels, which are wrapped in 265/70R18 Goodyear Wrangler DuraTrac Mud-Terrain tires. The new AT4X is also offered with a rocker guard accessory.

“GMC is a family of purpose-built, professional-grade vehicles designed and engineered to the highest standard,” the host concludes. “And with the new 2022 Sierra’s unrivaled technology, first class luxury, and serious capability, it’s a family positioned to soar to even greater heights.”

Pricing (including destination charge) for the 2022 GMC Sierra Denali Ultimate starts at $80,395, and $74,995 for the 2022 GMC Sierra AT4X. Deliveries for the refreshed 2022 GMC Sierra 1500 are expected to begin the first quarter of the 2022 calendar year. Reservations are now open at GMC.com.

  3. Almost as strange as the fact that you can’t get ANY model Tahoe with front fog lights. Yukons come with fog lights but not Tahoes.

  4. I’m really paying attention to the grille and headlight assembly, they appear to be heading in the direction of the GMC Denali HD Concept Truck rendering that was shown last year, it’ll be interesting to see how extreme things will get with the 2024 Model.
