Competitive Sales Comparison (USA)

Despite the 22 percent decrease in GMC Sierra sales, the full-size pickup truck line remains in fourth place in its segment when ranked by sales volume during Q3 2021. Big Red’s truck trailed the Ford F-Series (see running Ford F-series sales) in first place, its own corporate cousin – the Chevrolet Silverado – in second place – by a margin of 70,293 units (see running Chevy Silverado sales), and the Ram Pickup in third place. The Sierra easily outsold the remaining segment contenders – the Toyota Tundra and Nissan Titan – which saw larger declines than the GMC pickup truck.

All models in the segment saw a decline in sales volume during Q3 2021, with the Nissan Titan posting the largest decrease of nearly 31 percent. The Toyota Tundra posted a 24 percent decline while the GMC Sierra, Ram Pickup, and Ford F-Series all saw a 22 percent decrease in sales. The Chevrolet Silverado posted the smallest decline of 17 percent this quarter, enabling it to move up to second place in its segment.

The Sierra saw its segment share remain stable at 11 percent compared to Q3 2020. The only model in the segment to post an increase in segment share was the Silverado, growing 2 percentage points to 25 percent compared to 23 percent in Q2 2020. All other models maintained the same segment share compared to the third quarter of 2020.

The full-size pickup truck segment contracted nearly 21 percent to 496,488 units in Q3 2021, meaning that Sierra sales fell slightly faster the segment average.

We are providing Honda Ridgeline sales below for informational purposes, since the model straddles the midsize and full-size pickup truck segments.

It’s also worth noting that the two full-size GM trucks – the Sierra and Silverado – recorded 175,841 combined deliveries during the quarter. The results make GM the best-selling purveyor of full-size pickup trucks, outselling the F-Series by 3,042 units and the Ram Pickup by 54,137 units.

The GM Authority Take

The decrease in GMC Sierra sales during the third quarter of 2021 is unfortunate since the results follow a a 40 percent jump in Q2 2021, when deliveries of both the Sierra 1500 and Sierra HD jumped 38 percent and 46 percent, respectively. That was preceded by a 19 percent rise in Q1 2021, a 14 percent increase in Q4 2020, a 2 percent rebound in Q3 2020, a 5 percent decrease in Q2 2020, and an impressive 31 percent increase during Q1 2020.

The decline experienced in Q3 2021 is the direct result of the ongoing chip shortage, which has resulted in GM not producing nearly 300,000 vehicles. Luckily, a more stable supply is expected in 2022.

We expect GMC Sierra sales to continue to climb during 2021, though the ongoing microchip shortage might tamper with this forecast. Contributing to the growth forecast are GM’s plans to start producing full-size pickup trucks, including the Sierra, at its GM Oshawa plant, adding a fourth production facility for the full-size truck line.

We should also highlight the fact that interest in and sales of the GMC Sierra will likely improve even further after GM launches the 2022 model year refresh. The updated model, set to be revealed on October 21st, was exclusively previewed by GM Authority via a set of leaked images last week. That was followed by an official teaser from GMC for the Sierra Denali Ultimate, which we subsequently enhanced for an even better look at the refreshed truck.

  1. I wonder how many years the combined sales of Silverado and Sierra pickups actually outsold the F-150?

    1. Up North. Sales would be up if they could build the trucks. I ordered a truck in April and the dealer has no word on when it can be built there seems to be restraints of the order so I’m questioning when I will get it it, It was supposed to be at 21 and now it may be a 22 for all I know it will be a 23 the way things are going.

      1. +1… I m waiting for my Silverado with the diesel engine. But GM are not building those at the moment. And gas prices are high since recent months here in Canada so no way I m going to buy a V8. And price of the trucks is high too, I m reading in the news that many potential customers have decided to wait many months so prices become more like what they used to be…

    3. They are the same exact truck so might as well combine them. Only difference is the gmc is for the suckers who are stupid enough to pay more.

      1. The dealership experience and the materials are the reason to pay more. Sorry you can’t afford to splurge more peasant. We’ll enjoy loaner car availability and actual lobbies with well versed people rather than your dollar tree customer service.
