General Motors is working to develop a range of new technologies and features for future GM vehicles, enhancing comfort, convenience, and safety. Among these technologies is a new connected camera platform.
The new connected car platform was revealed last week by General Motors vice president of Global Innovation Pam Fletcher during the GM Investor Day event.
“Studies have shown that five of the top 20 consumer needs are related to vehicle safety when the driver is not nearby,” Fletcher explains. “We’re developing future vehicles with an available flexible connected camera platform that will allow owners to stream remote video from inside and outside of their vehicles to help provide peace of mind in times of stress.”
The upcoming General Motors connected camera platform can provide theft alerts, and will connect with an OnStar advisor who can review the remote video and assist when needed. The system will also provide a record of accidents or other incidents, even when the owner is not present.
The presentation showing the new General Motors connected camera platform includes an image of a smartphone app that includes the option for a vehicle live view, as well as multiple angles around the vehicle, the ability to flash the lights or turn the lights off, and the ability to save and share recordings.
The new feature is expected to provide General Motors with new subscription growth opportunities similar to the automaker’s Maps+ in-vehicle navigation app.
General Motors has a number of vehicle camera systems on offer, including the new Surround Vision Recorder offered with the upcoming 2023 Cadillac Lyriq. Tagged with RPO code XVR, the GM Surround Vision Recorder was previously offered on the Cadillac CT6, and included four external cameras located around the vehicle providing enhanced situational awareness, greater safety, and greater security as well.
General Motors is currently developing an interconnected digital mobility ecosystem that will incorporate a wealth of new features and technologies, including the connected camera platform discussed above. Learn more about this ecosystem in the brief video below:

BMW started selling this 5 years ago, called Remote 3D View.
And for only $50/mth through Onstar you can have access to it.
All these advanced features should be provided at no cost during the warranty period.
Yeah, gouging customers on app fees this day and age is ridiculous.
You can’t even use the app to remote start your car unless you pay!.. any other manufacturer offers this for free.
Even notifying emergency services is a paid feature. All of this is free on my wife’s ford truck.
