Competitive Sales Comparison (USA)
Chevy Equinox sales performance during Q3 2021 caused the model to fall to eighth in its segment from its typical second or third place spot. The Toyota RAV4 took first, the Honda CR-V placed second, the Nissan Rogue claimed third, Mazda CX-5 (see running Mazda CX-5 sales) took fourth, Subaru Crosstrek was in fifth, Subaru Forester finished in sixth, and the recently-overhauled Hyundai Tucson in seventh. It’s worth noting that the Nissan offering is comprised of two models – the “regular” Rogue and Rogue Sport.
The Equinox outsold all other contenders, including the Ford Escape (see running Ford Escape sales), Kia Sportage, the all-new Ford Bronco Sport, Volkswagen Tiguan (see running VW Tiguan sales), Jeep Cherokee, Mitsubishi Outlander, the Equinox’s own corporate cousin – the GMC Terrain (see running GMC Terrain sales), Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross, and the Dodge Journey.

Only 5 out of the 17 models in the segment saw sales gains, with the Mitsubishi Outlander, Subaru Crosstrek, and Mazda CX-5 posting the largest increases of 34, 18, and 14 percent, respectively. The Kia Sportage posted a 12 percent increase and the Mitsubishi Outlander Cross saw a growth of 6 percent. Meanwhile, the Dodge Journey and Jeep Cherokee saw the largest declines in the segment with 90 and 72 percent, respectively.
The Q3 2021 sales performance gives the Equinox a segment share of 6 percent – 4 percentage points less than what it held in Q3 2020 – and behind the 17, 14, and 10 percent commanded by the RAV4, CR-V, and Rogue, respectively.
The compact mainstream crossover segment contracted 21 percent to 532,369 units in Q3 2021, meaning Equinox sales fell significantly faster the segment average.
The GM Authority Take
The decline in Chevy Equinox sales during Q3 2021 comes after a 9 percent rebound in Q2 2021 and a 14 percent decline in Q1 2021. During Q3 2021, Equinox sales lagged substantially behind its top three rivals from Toyota, Honda and Nissan primarily as a result of reduced availability at the retail level as a result of production setbacks associated with the microchip shortage. In fact, recent reports indicate that the Equinox (along with the Chevy Malibu) was hit the hardest by chip-related production constraints. After being pushed back several times, the restart of Equinox production is now scheduled for November 1st.
Several other factors are also working against the Equinox:
- Internal competition from two newer two-row Chevrolet crossovers – the new Chevy Trailblazer and the Chevy Blazer. The Trailblazer is smaller than the Equinox but offers many of the same features for less, while the Blazer is larger yet also more expensive. In this regard, it’s possible that the Equinox is being “squeezed” from both ends by the newer and arguably more attractive Trailblazer and Blazer models.
- Higher intensity of competition in the mainstream compact crossover space. The Honda, Toyota and Nissan offerings are very strong and continue to capitalize on their image of reliability. The brands are capitalizing on this as customers move from sedans to crossovers.
- Diminished product desirability. One of the major changes to the Equinox for the 2021 model year was the deletion of the more powerful turbocharged 2.0L LTG engine. As a result, it’s possible that buyers looking for more power are buying rival offerings. GM’s plan was to address the issue by giving the refreshed 2022 Equinox the turbocharged 2.0L LSY engine as an option. However, The General has scrapped those plans.

It’s also worth noting that combining the 32,444 Chevy Equinox sales with the 9,901 deliveries of its corporate cousin and platform mate, the GMC Terrain, gives GM 42,345 combined deliveries in the compact crossover space. The result aren’t overly impressive, given that the RAV4, CR-V, and Rogue each sold more units than the Equinox and Terrain combined. That said, the results do represent a combined segment share of 8 percent. It’s worth noting that Terrain production has also been down for the past several weeks.

TOTAL | +0.07% | 46,989 | 46,956 | +46.48% | 192,995 | 131,753 |
By comparison, GM’s cross-town rivals at the Ford Motor Company saw 46,989 deliveries in this space – an increase of less than 1 percent – after launching Bronco Sport, its second entry into the space. As such, FoMoCo outsold The General in the C-crossover segment during Q3 2021.
It’s also worth noting that many entries, such as the RAV4, Bronco Sport, and Eclipse Cross are new or an all-new models while the Equinox has been available since the 2018 model year. GM has now launched the mid-cycle refresh for the Equinox, which was originally set to arrive as the 2021 Chevy Equinox. However, the COVID-19 pandemic pushed the refresh to the 2022 model year (see more on the 2022 Chevrolet Equinox). The updated model includes revised exterior styling, a new Equinox RS trim level, and a few other enhancements that should increase the crossover’s competitiveness.
Going forward, we expect Equinox sales to rebound to their typical levels once the refreshed 2022 model enters the market and production returns to normal levels.

I see this as a direct result to the factory pauses due to the chip shortage. I’m sure it makes sense to GM to prioritize the most profitable vehicles, but they need to realize that brand loyalty is at risk here. If they continue to meander, then they risk losing multiple sales in the future, not just sales for the next 4 months.
^^ Richard P. Very very true.
What makes me sick to my stomach is to see what the top 6 are. Pathetic. It’s amazing to me how far America has fallen to the point where people just don’t care that they are sending billions of dollars to Japan! To top it off, there isn’t one of those top 6 that is as nice looking as the Equinox of the Ford Escape.
Speaking of the Escape, I have a buddy who now sells at a Ford dealership up the road from where I work. Now that the Escape is being offered in the plug-in-hybrid AND has an all electric range of 37 miles (which works perfect for me), I decided that I wanted to test drive one. Went in the other day and drove an SEL version. That car blows the doors off our Mazda CX5 in every way. I will be ordering a 2022 Escape Titanium soon to have when my Volvo lease ends.
spare us your outrage. you work for japan/china manufacturers don’t you?
Oh, steve. We’ve been through this now what, 10 or 15 times? You just like trolling me. Admit it. And admit for once that the Japanese brands are nothing like they “may have been” in their heyday. I never drank the coolaid when I was with the store that had Honda’s and I haven’t drank it now. Never will. Do yourself a favor and find a different hobby rather than troll me.
just reminding you of your hypocrisy. you seem to forget or don’t care.
What does the word American made mean? I really want to know? Do people consider something made in the USA because it’s assembled here? Isn’t it true that there is no such thing as a car with all components from the US? Where does the metal come from the paint where does the plastic come from who supplies the electric wires who makes the electric wires? Just curious.
Jack: I responded to your comment below as well. But the article I was referring to on GMA was about the Corvette being NO 2 as most American made car. I’d say try to find that article and read it from a few days ago. Here is what I referred to from that article:
2021 Kogod Made In America Index
Virtually all of them make cars here, putting food on the table of tens of thousands of blue collar Peters and Marys, and they in turn are indirectly providing jobs in their community through the stores and other services they patronize.
As for all those profits going back to Japan, any stock broker will get you all the shares in any of them that you care to buy.
The Equinox employs Pedro and Maria. They indirectly provide jobs to people in their non-American cities. Other Chevrolets are made in Korea. Except for trucks, very few are made here.
I’d rather support my community, my state, or my region and its people. Others can worry about the bottom line on some company with a US street address and little more.
Yup I agree 100%
I had this on my short list but to me it’s very unimpressive after have looked at it and will continue to fall. It needs a complete redesign to add an “Emergency” 3rd row and make it more “truck” look like a CUV Colorado but still AWD and FWD. Basically like the VW Tiguan. They also need a better motor for it. Also the Dodge Journey slipped more because it’s no longer being produced.
They likely have a replacement in the works. They will make the usual Chevrolet blunder by not keeping the Equinox name. It will probably be a letter-number, or some brand new name, having to build model equity in the eyes of the public all over again.
Meantime, RAV-4s, CR-Vs, etc have had those names for decades; the names are known.
Absolutely disgraceful even with the chip shortage to blame. gm is supposed to be the market leader but they are being outsold three fold by Toyota? gm leads in very fee market segments these days.
GM hasn’t been a market leader in decades.
Grizzly: In terms of where it’s built and the profits, I’ll kindly disagree with you and still NOT buy anything Japanese. Even if Buick (or whatever American brand/model) assembles a car in another country, the same trickle down effect that you spoke about above still applies. I think you are glazing over the obviuos.
As for GM not being a leader for decades: Yup. And take a good look at when that started to decline. It was when GM decided to stop being GM and go after the import brands. GM was a leader when they build many different models from many different brands on the same platform. And look at how badly GM was kicked for doing so. Now they do much less of that with less brands and less models, and now we complain that they are no longer leaders in sales. Kind of a no win if you ask me.
Dan you seem like a smart guy I mean that when I say it, so let me ask you something what does American made mean in these days? Does it mean a car that’s assembled here? I ask because where do all the components come from? Does a vehicle even exist in this day that is actually all American? Where does the metal come from where does the fiber glass come from what about the paint, the glass, the electric wires who supplies and actually makes those? I’m just curious is all I have seen you comment before you seem to have a lot of insight so that’s why I’m asking you thanks.
@ Jack: Sorry, I click the box so that I don’t get notifications when someone comments on something I say, so I’m just now seeing this. Your question is a very good one. I’m sure many on here would have their own opinions here, but mine has been the same for many years. It’s where the profits go. In other words, if GM assembles a vehicle in Mexico that is sold here, the profits go into America. If Toyota assembles a car here and sells it here, the profits go back to Japan. Is that an over simplified way of looking at it? Yes. There are certainly a lot of factors that go into building a car and where all the parts/materials come from. And as some would/will point out, there are shareholders ans stocks, etc. Yes. But the overall profits from a GM sold vehicle stay in America. I personally refuse to send any of my money to Japan. It’s my choice, and for good reason. A good place for you to reference would be another article on here (GMA) recently that talked about the “Most American” cars and a really good site to look at for this info (I think it’s Kogod or something like that).
Its easy for you to sit there and preach that from behind a keyboard.
When your next GM vehicle constantly strands you, bleeds your wallet in agony like people who own BMW’s and has all the desirable features removed by the bean counters come here and preach how you will never consider a japanese brand.
There is a VERY good reason Toyota’s & Honda’s hold their value better overtime. The market is being rational in this case unlike brand fanboys.
@Evan: Two things. First, you see how I did the “@” in front of your name? That’s the way you let someone know you are commenting on something they said. Learn that so you can have a better flow of comments. Otherwise people really don’t know who you are speaking to. With that said, I will assume your comment was tilted towards me.
Second. Do you work in the auto business? Have you worked in the business? Do you understand who set’s residual values? Have you worked in the past for Toyota or Honda or any Japanese brand or do you now? Or are you just another traitor who will troll sites like this one because it’s how you make yourself feel better about what you drive? So do yourself a favor and learn a little about resale value and how it works. Who sets the RV. I would bet you don’t even know how to accurately estimate resale value or what it’s based on.
And BTW, I have never had a GM product leave me stranded or bleed my wallet. But my ex-wifes Toyota Camry sure did cost me a lot in upkeep and repairs.
First of all the RAV4 is all new, the CR-V just got a refresh… Hopefully Honda stopped making the engines where the gas was mixing with the oil, the Nissan has two models judge sales by one or the other, the Crosstrek and Forster should not be on an SUV/CUV list as all they are in my opinion are high off the ground WAGONS, as for Ford if the Bronco is selling so well like the media says it is then why isn’t it the segment leader? The Equinox will bounce back when the new EV model starts production in 2024-2025… And finally the Trailblazer and Blazer are stealing thunder from the Equinox personally I think the Trailblazer is better looking.
I don’t think it’s going to bounce back with the EV model unless it’s a complete overhaul. The issue I found with it is well almost everything compared to the competition. I know the exterior is subjective, but when most are going more towards the “Truck” look and not the Aero design it just looks odd from a Truck company imho. Also, the size no longer makes sense. It should be bigger and add the emergency 3rd row and be just a little bigger then the VW Tiguan. People want/need that size because many loved the GMT360’s Trailblazer/Envoy and so on size but hated the fuel economy. Make a modern version of them but keep it as a CUV since most do not need a true SUV. The Equinox needs to grow in size and add that emergency 3rd row or it will never be a competitor. I personally am leaning towards the VW Tiguan for the size and 3rd row and the more “Truckish” kinda BMW look and the price. The Equinox is more expensive (at least on lots if you can find one) then the VW.
Metalbourne the 2024-2025 is going to be a complete overhaul for the Equinox/Terrain. If you want size go with the Traverse or GMC ACADIA. The Equinox will not grow in size because of the Blazer which in my opinion should be a body on frame SUV based on the Colorado then the Equinox can take the place of the Blazer. Also what Equinox costs more then a VW??
Lol the bronco will smash anything gm has just be glad the chip shortage is happening or chevy would be even further down that list
GM err excuse me, gm could have done a better job with it’s mfrs. and supply chain relationships I think.
As usual the GMA headline is clickbait. The reason for the drop in sales is availability. Can’t sell what doesn’t exist at dealerships.
Buried deep in the post is “primarily as a result of reduced availability at the retail level as a result of production setbacks associated with the microchip shortage. In fact, recent reports indicate that the Equinox (along with the Chevy Malibu) was hit the hardest by chip-related production constraints”
You have the chip shortage because of JIT inventory. Accountants don’t want companies to have inventory on the books. They want the inventory out the door and sold before they have to pay the bills for inventory, usually 30 days.
https://gmauthority.com/blog/2021/10/chevy-equinox-inventory-non-existent-as-gm-aims-to-restart-production/
Factory pauses are a BIG part of thus considering Nox was once Chevrolet’s top seller. GM would rather give Suburban the semiconductor. It is going to get squeezed, however, because so many 4 seaters like Trailblazer and even Stellos look midsized for sure some shoppers are looking to save a buck.
Nox was a steady #3 and does need a more significant refresh soon!
Of course it has, first of all you can’t can’t them to sell and GM was silly getting rid of the 2.0 liter, the 1.5 is a joke.
Nick what the plastic fantastic Bronco 🤣🤣 lol… I saw one the other day, number one it’s butt ugly, it has black plastic cladding all over it, no V6 or V8… Just admit it it’s an Escape on steroids… And it’s a Ford the transmission is sure to give out in a year or two! BTW the Tahoe can and will smash this wanna be Bronco… Now if they made a full size two door Bronco or a 4WD Bronco 2 then I would love it but not this new junk.
