Competitive Sales Comparison (USA)
The impressive jump in Chevy Corvette sales in the U.S. during Q3 2021 enabled the sports car to remain the best-selling model in its class. In fact, the Corvette outsold all other rivals combined, including the Porsche 911, Porsche 718 (née Cayman/Boxster), Mercedes-AMG GT, Mercedes-Benz SL, Mercedes-Benz SLC, Audi R8 (see running Audi R8 sales), Nissan GT-R, Ford GT (see running Ford GT sales), Acura NSX and BMW i8.

The performance represents an ongoing improvement in Corvette sales volume, following strong numbers posted in Q1 2021 and Q2 2021 as well as Q3 2020 and Q4 2020. During each of these quarters, Corvette sales accounted for 51 percent segment share or higher. However, as we typically note, many contenders in this segment cost significantly more than the Corvette and naturally see lower sales volumes as a result.
During the third quarter of 2021, Corvette managed to grow its segment share to an astounding 76 percent from 55 percent a year ago. The second-place Porsche 911 – the most cross-shopped rival with the C8 – accounted for roughly a sixth as many sales with a 12 percent segment share, down from 14 percent in the year-ago quarter. The Porsche 718 line, comprised of the 718 Cayman and 718 Boxster, followed in third place with a 6 percent segment share, down from 9 percent compared to the year-ago quarter. The Porsches were followed by the Mercedes-Benz AMG GT with 4 percent, the Audi R8 with 1 percent, and the Nissan GT-R which also netted a 1 percent segment share. All other models, including the Mercedes-Benz SL-Class, Acura NSX, Ford GT, Mercedes-Benz SLC-Class, and BMW i8, each saw a segment share of 1 percent or less.
The premium sports car segment expanded an average of 16 percent to 13,346 units in Q3 2021, meaning that Corvette sales outpaced the segment nearly four-fold.
The GM Authority Take
The substantial growth in Chevy Corvette sales during the third quarter of 2021 continues to be highly welcome news. If it wasn’t so before, then it should be abundantly clear now that the Corvette C8 is a resounding success.
Better still, the Corvette C8 success story has just begun, with many high(er)-performance variants still on the horizon, including the C8 Z06, C8 E-Ray, C8 ZR1 and C8 Zora. The high-revving C8 Z06 will be the first out of the gate, launching for the 2023 Corvette model year. Once these models launch over the next several years, we expect Corvette sales to widen their dominance over the competition even further.
With interest in the new mid-engine Corvette at an all-time high, most C8 Corvette buyers being new to the Chevy brand, and transaction prices at all-time highs, we expect Chevy Corvette sales to continue increasing, so long as production continues uninterrupted at the GM Bowling Green plant that assembles the vehicle, and at the GM Tonawanda Engine plant, which assembles the 6.2L V8 LT2 engine used in the C8 Stingray. Notably, the Bowling Green Assembly plant has been running at full production capacity across two shifts ever since June 7th and 2022 Corvette models are entered production in early September.

Let’s be realistic. Most of the cars in that segment are well over $100K.
That is the point. The competition costs 2-4 times as much but are not 2-4 times as good. Some are not even as good, and this is just the first model.
What are the world wide sales?
Lol so a $60k car is in a segment with vehicles priced well north of $100k? Ugh ok I guess chevy should be happy they can be happy about something besides a recall. And before the idiots on here who don’t own one and are only fans open their mouth. I’m a corvette fan and I also own one.
Put a price tag well north of $100K on the Vette and the sales difference would not be near as great. Combine that with the VERY limited production of some of the other models in that group
Yup you are exactly right.
What’s the difference little buzzard…you couldn’t afford either.
Actually, I can afford almost 30 of them. But then again, I use a car to get from point A to point B. I’m not that shallow or lacking in self confidence to think I need a certain type of car to try to attract attention from others, but you obviously do
It is not a 60K car. I believe ATP for the C8 is running 82k. And a good many of those are getting dealer fees of 20k. So yes, at the moment it is around a 100k car for those that want it now. The C8 is doing fantastic. Demand is still strong with a 8 month wait if you want to get it from a dealer that will sell it to you at msrp. Congrats to GM on a big success.
What’s the starting price? Nobody cares about the markups what is msrp?
A base is 60k, few people opt for the base. This pushes up ATP. The most common vette is a 2LT, Z51 with a few options, around 82k. And convertibles are a higher percentage in the mix with the hard top. I think around 40%. And of course the vert adds to the price. A decked out vette is now 100k. So the average without markup is 82k. How many people buy a stripper porsche? Base price is pretty meaningless.
This is also true for the competition, and the ATP increase for them is even higher.
I remember the ATP being around there. That means $834M revenue for the Corvette in a single quarter. GM made their money back, and then some, without even full production. Cantankerous C3 owners were wrong. lol
You are an idiot.
Now that Chevy has the production line stabilized, and providing there are no further parts issues, perhaps the supply/demand curve will flatten this year and dealer markups will all but disappear.
I think more likely 2023 for that to happen. The big 3 dealers are all quoting 8-12 months from order to receipt. The big 3 are also selling at MSRP with no ADM. You can get one faster of course, for a price.
Base sticker price
Ford GT estimated at $500K
Acura NSX $169K
Audi R8 $148K
BMW i8. $138K
Nissan GT-R $113K
Porsche 911 $101K
Mercedes SL. $91K
Mercedes AMG GT $89K
Porsche 718 $60K
Chevy C8 Corvette $59.9K
Mercedes SLC $50K
Most of these cars sit on dealer lots for months eventually selling well below sticker. The Corvette’s average transaction price is higher than most of these models.
Good luck finding the Audi R8, Accura NSX, BMW I8, or the Ford GT sitting on a dealers lot
That’s a straight up lie Peter. You know what you just said about these cars sitting on dealer lots for months then selling below sticker is false. I like the corvette to but come on man.
I gotta ask you. Which of those vehicles you just named are sitting on dealer lots for months then selling below msrp?
Is the corvette plant closed again the first week of Oct. What is going on and when will the plant reopen?
Factory is running normal. Producing around 180 cars/day. Corvette forum has a thread that is updated daily. Yesterday production was 184.
Thank you for the reply. My car was to be built this week so hopefully it was. Thanks again.
Looks like the last VIN produced ended in 3354. If you go to corvette forum dot com, you can see the numbers in the c8 forum. I thought you could also reach out to either the dealer or gm to find out if you have reached status 3800, produced. But don’t forget, it still has to get shipped, and west coast goes by rail I think.
I just found out my car is at the 3400 level with a code of 10/11/2021. Does that mean the car will be built next week. I still do not have a VIN number? Thanks in advance.
I wish GM would keep the current design for the air intake on the side of the car. The new design is distracting – it draws too much attention to itself which disrupts the design’s overall balance. The current intake design fits well within the overall design without shouting “look at me!”
The C7 design was distracting too and I don’t recall auto accidents or disruption of traffic over the C7 & C8. You can say the same thing for Ferrari, Lambo & Aston Martin designs.
I feel bad for some owners waiting on their corvettes to be delivered. A truck carrying I believe 10 C8 caught fire last night engulfing all of them estimated value of over $900k.
Wow. Can you post a link ?
They reported on it here to I see. I live about 45mns away from the corvette plant and I saw it earlier today. I feel really bad for those owners. 😢

“the Corvette outsold all other rivals combined”
lol, it sold three times as many units as all the others combined. I’ve never been much of a Chevy fan but I think this is great!
