2022 Sierra AT4X Is GMC’s Equivalent To Silverado ZR2

The 2022 GMC Sierra 1500 introduces two new trim levels to the Light Duty Sierra pickup lineup, including the luxurious Sierra Denali Ultimate, as well as the rough-and-ready Sierra AT4X, the latter of which ushers in GMC’s equivalent to the new 2022 Chevy Silverado ZR2 as a more-capable off-roading model variant.

GM Authority was the first to report on the new 2022 GMC Sierra AT4X. Back in July, GM Authority exclusively announced that the AT4X was indeed slated to arrive with the 2022-model-year refresh, slotting in above the existing GMC Sierra AT4 with regard to the existing model lineup. Then last month, GM Authority provided a full rundown on expectations for the new AT4X pickup.

The keep it shiny side up, the 2022 Sierra AT4X is equipped with unique Multimatic DSSV spool-valve dampers, similar to the Colorado ZR2 and Silverado ZR2. These dampers are matched with unique springs, the combination of which increase the maximum front suspension travel by 50mm and rear suspension travel by 25mm, as compared to the non-X GMC Sierra AT4.

Under the hood, the 2022 Sierra AT4X runs the naturally aspirated 6.2L V8 L87 gasoline engine as standard, with output rated at 420 horsepower and 460 pound-feet of torque. Output is routed through a 10-speed automatic transmission and two-speed transfer case, with multiple driving modes on tap, such as Terrain Mode for one-pedal rock crawling capabilities.

The drivetrain also comes with front and rear e-locking differentials, while unique chassis and suspension tuning make the most of onboard components. The greasy bits are protected by a unique steel transfer case skid plate. Payload capacity is set at 1,420 pounds, while the trailering rating is 8,900 pounds.

Outside, the 2022 Sierra AT4X rolls on a set of black 18-inch wheels, which are wrapped in 265/70R18 Goodyear Wrangler DuraTrac Mud-Terrain tires. The new AT4X is also offered with a rocker guard accessory.

The cabin space is decked out with a unique “Obsidian Rush” interior treatment, which incorporates premium leather upholstery with white piping and red stitching. The luxurious leather is complemented by Vanta ash wood trim, while 16-way power adjustable and massaging front seats, a microsuede headliner, 15-inch Head-Up Display, and 12-speaker Bose sound system keep it comfortable and connected.

Pricing for the new 2022 Sierra AT4X starts at $74,995. Deliveries for the refreshed 2022 GMC Sierra 1500 are expected to ramp up in the first quarter of the 2022 calendar year.

  1. AT4x. Sigh.

Waiting for the AT4xR or the AT4xRti-7.

  2. Can’t wait to see the all bro-dozers go off-roading when they hit the curb at the mall with these.

  3. I’m in love

  4. GMC ruined the front fascia. And how is AT4x equivalent to ZR2 when the AT4x front bumper design doesn’t expose the front wheels to the oncoming terrain? AT4x certainly doesn’t have a comparable approach angle.

    1. That is a good catch, GM failed that, I guess you’ll have to opt for an aftermarket bumper

    2. Good catch that’s ridiculous they didn’t change the front bumper. Also I don’t think they changed the hood like on the Silverado. The Chevy looks better and will be 6k less probably.

  5. WHEN WILL THE 2022 GMC CANYON AT4 BE ON THE CAR LOTS IN PRINCE EDWARD ISLAND CANADA. ARE THEY WORTH WAITING FOR OR SHOULD I LOOK AT THE FORD RANGER

    1. Go ford the ranger is better anyways. The ranger raptor will make the gmc and chevy sales plummet.

  6. Love it. But will I even be able to buy it at MSRP? And when will that be, 2022 maybe? Just another product you can’t really buy on your own terms.

  7. the AT4X is the existing AT4 added with the denali ultimate interior and the multimatic dampers and then added $15k to the sticker. Waste of money in my opinion beyond the AT4. GM is getting rediculous with pricing.

  8. They jumped the shark with the AT4X, the problem is they made an off-road capable truck a luxury vehicle. The X off-road package should be available across the trim lines, not just the top end AT4. Another item I don’t get is they eliminated the exhaust tips in the bumper for better clearance – why? The exhaust tips in the bumper are only about a 1/2″ lower than the bottom of the bumper – I guess whatever clearance they can get, the better. If I’m spending close to $80K after taxes I’m not taking it off-roading on trails where I’ll need locking differentials and one pedal low drive range. I’m not in the FU money bracket yet and with Biden running things it keeps getting farther away.

    1. Brother I doubt anyone will take this thing off-roading. It’s nothing more then a status symbol.

  9. It would be nice to see the lockers as an option on the regular AT4. I could do without DSSV shocks and seat massagers. Plus, no diesel in the At4x is stupid.

  10. I was super excited then I saw that stupid console. Why can’t GM be like Ram and have a luxury front bench?

    Reply
    1. I prefer the bucket seats, but don’t want the shifter in the console, I like the storage in the console, this isn’t a performance vehicle. I have no problem with a column shifter – I don’t know why all the auto journalists go into a tizzy over it – it does its job, it works, leave it alone. I’m not a fan at all of the Ram dash mounted shifter.
