Three months after GM Authority exclusively reported that the new Buick Envision would soon receive a new 1.5T engine in China, General Motors launched the 2022 model-year lineup of the compact crossover equipped with its latest internal combustion engine. The automaker is initially introducing the new 1.5L Turbo engine in three versions of the 2022 Buick Envision S and Envision Plus in the Asian country.
All three new versions of the 2022 Buick Envision S and extended Envision Plus arrive on the Chinese market equipped with GM’s new eighth-generation EcoTec 1.5L four-cylinder turbocharged engine, the latest member of the engine family introduced the all-new, China-exclusive 2022 Buick Verano Pro back in August. Notably, it is the most powerful 1.5L engine ever developed by the American manufacturer.
Specifically, the second-generation Buick Envision variants that debut the new 1.5T LAH engine are distributed as follows: Elite and Luxury versions for the standard-size Envision S and a single Luxury version for the Envision Plus with up to three rows of seats. All come standard with the 1.5T engine and a modern 48V mild hybrid powertrain.
Paired with the electric drivetrain of the mild hybrid system, the new 1.5T LAH engine in the 2022 Buick Envision is capable of producing 155 kW or 208 horsepower along with 270 Nm or 199 pound-feet of torque. In addition to being 26 percent more powerful than the previous-generation 1.5L engine, that figure equates to 103 kW or 138 horsepower per liter and makes it one of the most power-dense engines on the market.
Buick claims that the new 1.5T engine in the 2022 Buick Envision S and Envision Plus, mated exclusively to GM’s nine-speed automatic transmission, leads among similar-displacement engines, providing explosive acceleration and more relaxed high-speed cruising capability. Additionally, the 2022 Envision 1.5T promises to be more efficient and meet China’s stringent emissions standards.
The new 2022 Buick Envision S and Envision Plus equipped with the 1.5T engine are now available from the Tri-Shield brand’s extensive dealer network in China, its main volume market. This new powertrain configuration complements existing models equipped with the turbocharged 2.0L I4 LSY engine and further strengthens the Envision family’s level of competitiveness in the Chinese market.
The suggested prices of the three new versions of the 2022 Buick Envision with the 1.5T engine are as follows:
- Envision S 1.5T Elite: 209,900 CNY (about $32,850 USD at the current exchange rate)
- Envision S 1.5T Luxury: 217,900 CNY ($34,100 USD)
- Envision Plus 1.5T Luxury: 235,900 CNY ($36,920 USD)

OK. Mild hybrid good for CCP, not the USA. Loose many customers to foreign brands. You think they will just come back when you try to push your all electric line up?
You’re probably putting more thought into this than they did. For example, you mentioned customers and what they might want.
That’s great, so if I decide to move to China I’ll think about buying one, other than that i really don’t care what GM is doing in China..
Rick:
The new 2022 Buick Envision S and Envision Plus equipped with the 1.5T engine are now available from the Tri-Shield brand’s extensive dealer network in China, its main volume market. GM sells over a million Buicks a year in China, which translates to profit which benefits Research and Development that makes better Buicks possible here. I don’t like a lot of the things they do, but they do buy our cars. Who else does that?
I would buy a hybrid version of this car to replace my Chevrolet Volt which is nine years old now. It would be a bit hard not having the full electric range I have been enjoying all this time (which has not degraded). Prior to this we enjoyed our Ford Escape Hybrid which fed our desire to have even more electric capability.
But Mary seems to want us to buy a Korean or Japanese competitor since we are STILL WAITING for GM to step up and give us something to buy.
I do not understand why they aren’t bringing over the Envision Plus…..there’s a serious gap between the Enclave and Envision. I’m ready to trade my 2017 Envision but want something a little larger. Thinking about an Acadia but I know it won’t ride like a Buick. I would buy the Envision Plus no doubt.
Agreed! I’m currently looking into buying an Envision in the next 2 years and I was hoping they would bring the Envision Plus over to the US. I like the Envision it’s a sleek SUV that fits the looks of its competitors like the RDX, but I want something a little bigger. However I don’t want the Enclave because the rear end is bubbly and bulging so the Envision Plus would be a great shoo-in for me.
Yea I ended up just getting a jeep Cherokee because of that.
I saw a Grand Cherokee L the other day. I like the way it looks but they are pricey. Wonder how the ride quality compares to a Buick?
The1.5 L should be available in the Encore GX in this country.
Explosive Acceleration- hmmmm- I’m in line.
