Super Cruise Won’t Be Available At 2022 Cadillac Escalade Production Start

One of the most noteworthy upgrades introduced with the latest fifth-generation Cadillac Escalade is the inclusion of GM’s Super Cruise semi-autonomous driver assist system. Unfortunately, the feature won’t be available at the start of production for the 2022 Cadillac Escalade.

Earlier this month, GM Authority reported that the GM Super Cruise semi-autonomous driver assist system would remain an optional feature for the 2022 Cadillac Escalade, rather than included as standard for Cadillac Escalade Premium Luxury, Premium Luxury Platinum, Sport, and Sport Platinum trim levels, as was previously communicated to dealers. Instead, it was reported that Super Cruise will remain a free-flow option on each of these trim levels.

Now, however, GM Authority has learned that Super Cruise will not be available at the outset of production for the 2022 Cadillac Escalade. It’s currently unclear when the feature will once again become available for the luxury SUV.

For those readers who may not know, the GM Super Cruise feature allows drivers to remove their hands from the steering wheel during extended highway driving on select North American roads, including highways in the U.S. and in Canada. Considered a Level 2 automated system by the NHTSA, Super Cruise incorporates a variety of onboard systems, including visual cameras, LiDar mapping, GPS information, and radar to steer, brake, and accelerate the vehicle.

Initially launched for the 2018 Cadillac CT6, the GM Super Cruise system is now offered on the Cadillac CT5 and Cadillac CT4 luxury sedans, and can be used on 200,000 miles of compatible roads. The system will also be offered for the 2022 Chevy Silverado 1500, 2022 GMC Hummer EV, and 2022 GMC Sierra 1500.

The 2022 Cadillac Escalade is the second model year of the latest fifth-generation vehicle, arriving with a few small changes and updates over the preceding 2021 model year, including the deletion of Shadow Metallic and Dark Mocha Metallic exterior paint colors, replaced by three new exterior colors, namely Mahogany Metallic, Galactic Gray Metallic, and Wilder Metallic. The 2022 Cadillac Escalade will also add the Buckle To Drive feature, and delete Near Field Communication phone pairing.

  1. Without Super Cruise on Escalade Cadillac is going to lose customers. But the more important question is: Is Cadillac management incompetent to allow this situation get so far? After all, they knew a long time in advance about the chip situation and were not capable of doing something about it.

  5. Put my deposit down March 3rd 2021for a new Escalade. My order has yet to be placed. Dealership tells me they haven’t gotten their allotment. The Super Cruise option has been on again off again since I put my $$ down. Planning on getting it if available when the allotment finally comes up.

  6. For those that can wait till the shortage of microchips are sorted out, it will be hard to justify buying the ’22 models of less features that were impacted. Will ’23 models be impacted also?

  7. Always a problem, i didn’t order my escalade this year because of the running board, i didn’t have a chip. I waited until now and not have a super cruiser, something that would be interesting.but. unfortunately Cadillac disappointing me again

  8. I haven’t got an allocation yet so no I have not gotten my Escalade. It’s been nearly one year since I gave my down payment to the dealership. Very disappointing…

  9. The main vendor of Super Cruise for GM is still faced with challenges with sub tier suppliers to them, chips, etc. Hence the delay on your new Escalade. Do you think these control systems are designed and made by GM and Caterpillar in-house? No.

    The car and equipment makers promote and reimage themselves to be the high tech originators just like GM’s new electric receptacle plug in logo / trademark. This is the new Wow in thing, electric science on digital, wireless platforms. What year is it? Saw this in the fifties and sixties with TRW in Cleveland, Ohio.

    Autonomous, wireless controls are designed and developdd by various Silicon Valley, Route 128, Texas, Florida, and Space Park vendors, assembled offshore in Asia and shipped to auto and equipment assembly plants for final install. Auto and equipment makers provide oversight.

    Autonomous – electric vehicles is promulgated by the Pentagon to minimize war and special op wet work injuries and casualties. The bonus is use by private enterprise just like the development of the internet, drones and aircraft.

    Autonomous control systems were being tested 25+ years ago by vendor developers on Highway 101 on the Bay area peninsula. I observed this directly. Chips were developed 70+ years ago on the Pennisula for defense work starting with transistors and circuit boards. RCA, IBM, GE, Xerox, Western Electric, Burroughs, Remington Rand, NCR, were the big players back then on tech development in the East and Silicon Valley. Remember Fairchild Hiller Semiconductor? Silicon Valley back then was a beautiful orchard and veggie farm outpost.

    GM, Ford, Caterpillar, Deere, Tesla, etc., source and buy autonomous and vehicle information control systems from vendors in collaboration with each other such as Motorola, Intel, Hughes, Texas Instruments, Harris, Hitachi, Panasonic, Woodward Governor, United Technologies, Boeing, Lockheed-Martin, Northrup Grumman, LG, HP, etc., and several exotic specialty outfits based in Japan, Germany, Boston area, Colorado and California.

    It’s a new big thing, autonomous electric cars, busses and trucks. Mary Barra, GM, others and Uncle Sam are now onto it like flies on a rib roast. It’s here. Don’t fight it. We are gaining our second set of teeth now. Slowly but surely.

    The total autonomous control package is complex and exotic. They are trying to make it absolutely flawless so the maggot PI and product liability attorneys don’t have something to feed upon, and to keep the egg off Elon Musk’s face.

    It’s an interesting world.

  11. None of this matters if you can’t actually buy an Escalade. I have been on a waiting list for a year now. Last week I was at my dealership to follow up and was told that Cadillac is only building 10 Escalade per month for the entire country. It’s a hopeless situation.
