Ford has unveiled the refreshed 2022 Ford Expedition, debuting an updated rival for the Chevy Tahoe, Chevy Suburban, and GMC Yukon SUVs. The refreshed 2022 Ford Expedition offers additional trim levels and options, including a new off-roader model, revised styling, more power, and the latest tech features.
Styling up front now includes a new fascia with horizontal styling elements, with horizontal headlights bracketed by C-shaped lighting signatures. LED headlights are standard. The taillights were also updated, and there are new wheel designs to choose from as well.
The new model lineup is headlined by the Timberline series, offered as the most off-road-capable Expedition ever. The 2022 Ford Expedition Timberline is equipped with a unique grille and Active Orange accents, while greater ground clearance (measured at 10.6 inches) helps to avoid obstacles. The Expedition Timberline also features Trail Turn Assist and heavy-duty underbody skid plates sourced from the F-150 Raptor.
The new trim lineup also includes the 2022 Ford Expedition Stealth Edition Performance Package, which adds in unique styling upgrades, plus sport-tuned suspension for enhanced driving engagement on the road. Outside, you’ll find a gloss black grille, mirror caps, roof rails, running boards, tailgate applique, rear bumper skid plate, fog lamp bezels, black badging, and light housings. In the corners, the Stealth Edition gets 22-inch aluminum wheels, also finished in black, housing red brake calipers. The Stealth Edition is offered on Limited and Limited Max models.
In the cabin, the refreshed 2022 Ford Expedition can be equipped with a plethora of Driver-Assist Technology, including Ford BlueCruise for hands-free driving on select highways. Ford BlueCruise hands-free driving is offered on Expedition Platinum trims.
There’s also an optional Bang & Olufsen sound system with 22 speakers, as well as an optional 12.4-inch high-definition digital gauge cluster. The standard spec adds a 12-inch infotainment screen, with the option to upgrade to a 15.5-inch display.
Meanwhile, under the hood, the twin-turbocharged 3.5L EcoBoost V6 gets a boost to 440 horsepower and 510 pound-feet of torque in high-output guise. The ‘six is also available with 375 horsepower and 470 pound-feet of torque.
The refreshed 2022 Ford Expedition is set to go on sale in the first quarter of the 2022 calendar year.

If done correctly, the portrait style screen looks good and flows along with the vehicle’s interior lines. Ford got it wrong here. The aspect ratio for the back up screen and Apple CarPlay/Android Auto is incorrect and breaks up the flow of the interior lines. Plus, all of your physical controls for HVAC and radio are all unfortunately absent now. You now have to use the touch screen for HVAC now, which I despise.
And why is Ford still taking the total lazy route by copying and pasting the instrument panel design from the Ford F-150 (The Fully electric F-150 Lighting, that is) to the Expedition’s cabin instead of giving it a fully SUV specific cabin experience like what General Motors and Jeep are doing? It’s the epitome of laziness, cost cutting or just lack of creativity for a better word.
Back to the interior, the interior design visually has taken a step downwards with that horribly tacked on screen. Both the all-new Suburban and Wagoneer offer a better designed cabin experience with higher quality materials, much greater cargo capacity, as well as more exclusive content and features still not offered on the Ford likes heads up display and rear camera mirror.
But the biggest problem the Expedition has that this refresh will never address is the inadequate cargo space in even the Expedition MAX. Somehow with the way they’ve carried over their old five link independent rear suspension from the previous generation into their current model’s architecture has somehow created totally insufficient cargo space despite the similar dimension specs to the Suburban, Tahoe and Wagoneer. Since that has a lot to do with their hard points in their design, they’ll never be able to address it with this mid-cycle refresh. I don’t know what Ford was thinking designing an extended length full-size SUV with more than enough room for 7-8 passengers, but not even enough cargo space behind the 3rd row for 5.
Maybe 1 or 2 of the 17 steering wheel buttons that I can see are the physical buttons for the HVAC. 😉
*18. you forgot the Horn LOL
Mr. Pink: Well said. That interior doesn’t look bad. But that screen ruins everything.
I think it needs a bigger screen.
I am not impressed do you think you could make that screen any Bigger your first priority is to drive this thing not to look at television
Looks like they forgot the screen then hot glued it on. Maybe looks better in person?
Wow! Put that screen on a swivel and add a TV antenna and Blue Ray player! NOT Talk about ‘taking your eyes off the road’, good grief.
Screen is a lil to big , just wish there was a more basic off roader no 3rd row could be a good car camper over lander not every one wants or has a need for 3 row 7-8 passenger family wagon like to see it tested with the Tahoe z71 and sequoia trd pro
Well MikE, lucky for you that vehicle does exist and has for decades. Aka, the pickup truck. Best of all,, they’re cheaper and available in numerous configurations.
Bigger screen is NOT better. I know this make me sound old, but I miss the tactile feel of real buttons.
Avenir: It doesn’t make you sound old. It make you sound mature. Nobody needs a stupid huge screen like that.
Dan this is exactly what we were talking about yesterday lol. This thing looks like a tablet you could pick up and carry with you lol.
Kyle: Exactly. I don’t mind screens and probably wouldn’t want a car without one any more. But just not so big and “in your face” styling. What I like? Perfect example is the Buick Encore GX and Envision. Beautifully done.
Exactly I have a nice flat screen TVs in my house I don’t need one in my car to lol
I don’t get it.
That I know of, Cadillac, Honda, Stellantis, and (I believe) Volvo all had few hard buttons and knobs at one point, then they brought them back due to customer complaints. Now Car companies are taking them away again!? WTF!?
Case and point, the new Silverado, no hard Audio controls. Did GM not learn their lesson with CUE!?
I thought the new Tahoe screen looked like they just jammed it into the dashboard. This Expedition screen is completely ridiculous. It seems like car companies are overthinking how much these screens should do how much room they should consume. I thought my 2015 Tahoe dash had a nice balance of screen an buttons.
How am I still the only one who sees interior inspiration taken from the new C8 Corvette with the way the screen integrates and the design of the instrument panel? A flowing style screen can look just as good as a traditional integrated screen if executed correctly (Of which, the new Suburban/Tahoe’s screen looks thoughtfully executed compared to horribly tacked on screens from the Expedition, Explorer as well as many Toyota products). The fact that very few people have noticed C8 interior inspiration in the new Suburban and Tahoe’s cabin has gotten me quite annoyed.
On todays episode of Screens Gone Wild we feature the new Ford Expedition! I fully agree with everyone about the screen size, when is enough enough? Can you imagine the repair bill when a kid throws a toy and cracks that sucker out of warranty! Out of this class I think the Yukon Denali does it best, it’s the perfect sized screen and still flows with the interior.
Look as though you could just remove that extra larger screen/tablet from the Expedition’s dash and take it into your work meeting to complete your job presentation.
Great more ugly off road wheel choices. Just what we need! And what is next a freaking 75″ TV bolted to the hood? This is getting so ridiculous and out of context.
