Toyota revealed the all-new 2022 Tundra as its next-generation full-sized pickup truck rival to the recently refreshed 2022 Chevy Silverado 1500 and upcoming 2022 GMC Sierra 1500. Calling it an “absolute powerhouse,” highlights of the 2022 Toyota Tundra include a new twin-turbo V6 with an optional hybrid version, radical exterior styling, and totally redesigned interior.
Top features of next-generation 2022 Toyota Tundra:
- New standard 3.5-liter twin-turbo V6 producing 389 horsepower and 479 pound-feet of torque, mated to a 10-speed automatic transmission
- Available i-Force Max hybrid powertrain producing 437 horsepower and 583 pound-feet of torque
- Up to 12,000-pound maximum towing capacity
- Bold exterior styling complements spacious, well-equipped interior
- New infotainment system with available 14-inch touchscreen
- Available 12.3-inch fully digital driver instrument panel
- Standard Toyota Safety Sense 2.5
The most striking change of the new 2022 Toyota Tundra over the previous generation is its radical, angular exterior styling. The Double Cab configuration can be matched to either a 6.5-foot or an 8.1-foot bed, while the CrewMax can be combined with either a 5.5-foot or a 6.5-foot bed.
“Our design goal from the beginning was to create the most powerful, rugged and sophisticated looking full-size pickup that will take Tundra to a whole new level,” said President of Calty Design Research, Kevin Hunter. “Because recreation and an outdoor lifestyle are at the core of Toyota truck identity, we set out to create a muscular, chiseled and athletic design that also looks like it could handle the toughest towing demands.”
Complementing the all-new body on the 2022 Toyota Tundra is an interior meant to retain that same “technical muscle” motif.
The new Tundra cabin incorporates a horizontal layout theme as a departure from the vertical layout on most other trucks in the market. The automaker claims it complements the design goal of integrating the instrument panel and center stack to flow with the interior layout. Premium materials were also used, such as wrapped armrests as well as dash and door padding on most trim levels.
Coincidentally, the new Tundra interior approach mirrors that of the refreshed 2022 Chevy Silverado 1500, which shifted from a vertical stack layout to a horizontal one with digital displays and a totally new cabin design with upgraded materials throughout. On the 2022 Toyota Tundra, creature comforts include an available panoramic roof, heated and ventilated front seats, rear sunshade, heated steering wheel, and more.
Standard on 2022 Chevy Silverado LT trim levels and above, the infotainment spec now includes a 13.4-inch color touchscreen along with a 12.3-inch configurable all-digital instrument cluster. Making the list of tech options is the GM Super Cruise semi-autonomous driver-assist system for the High Country trim level. And the 2022 Silverado will also offer assisted trailering capabilities.
The all-new Tundra offers two powertrain options: a standard twin-turbo V6 engine and new hybrid version of it. Both will be mated to a new 10-speed automatic transmission featuring a sequential shift mode, uphill/downhill shift logic, and tow/haul driving modes.
The 2022 Tundra’s new, highly efficient twin-turbo 3.5-liter V6 engine produces 389 horsepower and 479 pound-feet of torque.
By comparison, the turbocharged 2.7-liter I4 L3B on the 2022 Chevy Silverado model year refresh received a high-output upgrade with a GM-estimated 20-percent increase in torque from 348 to 420 pound-feet at 4,000 rpm. The upgraded engine produces 310 horsepower at 5,600 rpm and delivers peak torque from 1,500 to 4,000 rpm. As a result, GM said that the high-output 2.7L in the 2022 Chevy Silverado “leads with more torque than any base engine in its class and has a maximum trailering rating of 9,600 pounds in a two-wheel drive configuration.”
The 2022 Tundra new hybrid twin-turbo V6 is Toyota’s i-Force Max powertrain, which pairs the twin-turbo V6 with a bell-housing electric motor system to produce a combined output of 437 horsepower at 5,200 rpm and 583 pound-feet of torque at 2,400 rpm. Special “sport” settings make use of the electric motor’s instantaneous responsiveness.
For comparison, the 2022 Silverado 6.2-liter V8 L87 produces 420 horsepower at 5,600 rpm and 460 pound-feet of torque at 4,100 rpm. An available 3.0-liter I6 LM2 turbo-diesel Duramax produces 277 horsepower at 3,750 rpm and 460 pound-feet of torque at 1,500 rpm.
Toyota says its full-size pickup was redesigned from the ground up as its “toughest, most capable, most advanced Tundra to date.” Improvements and enhancements to the new Tundra include a new high-strength boxed, steel-ladder frame, aluminum-reinforced composite bed, and fully redesigned multi-link rear suspension with improved ride comfort, straight-line stability, and overall handling dynamics along with towing capability. This gives the 2022 Toyota Tundra a maximum towing capacity of up to 12,000 pounds and a maximum payload capacity of 1,940 pounds.
The multi-link rear suspension introduces a new rear-end air suspension option for the Tundra. Adaptive Variable Suspension system is also available or the first time on the Tundra, designed to adjust damping force based on ever-changing road conditions from large potholes to bumps and small rocks.
The 2022 Chevy Silverado 1500 still uses a live axle with leaf springs across the model line.
The 2022 Tundra TRD Off-Road packages include monotube Bilstein shocks improve damping for on- and off-highway driving. Additional upgrades include 2.5-inch diameter FOX internal bypass shocks providing the truck with a 1.1-inch lift, along with a front stabilizer bar, red painted suspension parts, TRD aluminum front skid plate plus additional underbody protection, and unique all-terrain Falken tires.
Upgrades include Multi-Terrain Select to help control wheel spin on a variety of terrain, CRAWL Control which functions as a low-speed, off-road cruise control, and Downhill Assist Control.
To complement the popular Silverado Trail Boss, Chevy’s Silverado refresh debuted the first-ever 2022 Chevy Silverado ZR2 as the new flagship off-road entrant in the automaker’s light-duty pickup portfolio. It features front and rear e-lockers, a taller ride height, and advanced Multimatic DSSV dampers. A new Terrain Mode setting is also standard and allows for one-pedal driving when rock crawling.
The design of the new ZR2 incorporates a high-approach steel front bumper with removable end caps enabling an improved 31.8-degree approach angle, complemented by 18-inch off-road alloy wheels wrapped in 33-inch Goodyear Wrangler Territory tires and additional underbody skid plates.
Every trim level of the Tundra now comes standard with Toyota Safety Sense 2.5.
Chevy Safety Assist is standard on all LT trim levels and above on the 2022 Silverado.
So far, the Chevy Silverado and GMC Sierra have sold more units than the Toyota Tundra through the first half of the 2021 calendar year, with the Silverado posting 291,322 units sold, and the Sierra posting 138,412 units sold, as compared to 43,865 units sold for the Tundra.

No V8? HAHAHAHAHA Nope!
Is there anything good for this new Tundra?
The 10-speed automatic transmission along with the hybrid turbo V6 sounds appealing, until you look at the details and realize there is no 4-wheel-drive auto and the battery pack was placed inside the cabin resulting in the loss of under seat storage and/or a load-flat floor.
Panoramic sunroof looks appealing until you see someone sit in the back seat and realize they have to head room. Less than 6 feet tall you are probably alright, but approach that threshold you will be hitting your head if you lean forward.
14-inch touch screen in the center stack, OK, you won the numbers game, but it’s not integrated well and looks tacked-on/tacky, so who cares that you can tout the biggest number.
Console shifter, why? Yes, some love that, but it’s literally in the way and blocking access to the brake-hold and parking brake buttons.
Exterior styling, I realize this is subjective, but in my opinion it’s pretty darn ugly.
Interior styling, subjective again, but with the issues of the tacked-on touch screen, the console shifter blocking access to the features on the center stack, the pano-roof leaving no head room in the rear, and the battery pack taking the place of the under-seat storage, the interior design is big fail in my book.
But alas, the #1 reason consumers will buy it, Long Term Durability, and they will be justified in doing so. The other 3 OEM’s will continue to not compete for the most important customer requirement.
This truck gets the award for ugliest truck of the year!!
So, how to outsell your competitors? It’s not HP, Torque, tow capacity. It’s how big of a screen is available! Soon, there will only be a docking port to slide in your own touch screen tablet.
Looks great.
The SR5 SX blacked out version is going to look awesome.
Too bad jap crap beats out a chebby POS!! HA-HA!!
I think GM did a great job on the 22 refresh, especially the ZR2, hopefully same with the at4. Be great to see in person. Too bad the gas mileage sucks, be a great truck,, right up until your on a trip with the trailer/family 2000k miles away from home and a lifter fails!! Ya looks great in the shop for 2 weeks on a brand new truck!!
I think that for a half ton people we’ll buy it for the ride and hybrid V6 With over 500 lbs of torque. Toyota has said they well never sell the number of vehicles that Chevy or Ram sell.
It’s just as ugly as the current version and will probably sell just as lousy…
Hilarious, the Toyota is as ugly as the Nissan Titan now.
Geeeez, is that thing ugly. It amazes me that Toyota let something that butt ugly out of the design studio…terrible. It’s no wonder the domestic trucks win every time.
Toyota’s styling is typically bad and their durability and quality is overrated. I had the misfortune of buying a new Corolla which was the worst car I have ever owned by a large margin. The paint was failing at less than a year old, quarter panel rust through at seven years, used a quarter of oil every 500 miles at 80,000 miles, and numerous hood latch, CD charger, wheel bearings, and serpentine belt and pretensioner replacements. I had to replace the hood latch twice. I have never replaced a good latch on any other car. Toyota’s designers stink and their engineers are not much better. If you are inclined to by a Japanese car Honda would be a much better choice. Toyota is the car for aging baby boomers who do not like cars and “think” Toyota is the smart choice.
