Competitive Sales Comparison (USA)

The drastic increase in GMC Yukon sales enables the model to maintain third spot in its competitive set, as its corporate cousins – the Chevy Tahoe (see running Chevrolet Tahoe sales) and Chevy Suburban (see running Chevrolet Suburban sales) continued to jointly outsell the Ford Expedition (see running Ford Expedition sales) for first place in the segment.

Combining sales of the Tahoe and Suburban (in the same way as Ford does with the Expedition and Expedition Max, respectively) results in the two Chevrolet models generating 41,281 deliveries, outselling the Expedition by 16,036 units. Notably, the Tahoe alone outsold the Expedition during the second quarter by 2,663 units. Meanwhile, the Yukon family – comprised of the regular-length Yukon and extended-length Yukon XL – saw just 1,388 fewer sales than the Expedition.

It’s worth noting that the Yukon experienced the largest increase in sales volume in its competitive set during Q2.

However, the Yukon saw its segment share rise 4 percent at the expense of all other segment rivals, except for the Toyota Sequoia and Suburban.

Taking into account the Tahoe, Suburban and Yukon, GM saw 65,138 sales in the mainstream full-size SUV segment for a 65 percent segment share.

The full-size mainstream SUV segment expanded nearly 91 percent to 99,980 units in Q2 2021, meaning Yukon sales outperformed the segment average.

The GM Authority Take

GMC Yukon sales grew faster than the segment average during the second quarter of 2021, allowing it to creep up on the Ford Expedition in the sales ranks. In fact, the Yukon’s segment share trailed that of the Expedition by a single percentage point. We attribute the circumstance to two factors:

The Yukon, along with its corporate Tahoe and Suburban platform mates, were overhauled (re-engineered and redesigned) for the 2021 model year. With its new looks, technology, enhanced performance, and optimized efficiency, we expect the all-new 2021 GMC Yukon to further improve GM’s already-dominant position in the highly-lucrative full-size SUV space, as supply allows. The full-size SUVs – including the Yukon, Tahoe/Suburban and Escalade, are believed to be the biggest drivers of revenue and profit for GM.

However, competition is heating up. On the one hand, the Ford Expedition is performing well in the segment, having posted a 101 percent increase in sales volume during Q2 2021. The Ford competitor will receive a refresh for the 2022 model year. On the other hand are new entrants are on the horizon, including the upcoming Jeep Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer. Despite these developments, we fully expect the new Yukon to hold its own in the segment, and possibly rise to the second-best-selling position behind the Tahoe/Suburban, edging out the Expedition. However, the ongoing microchip shortage could restrain that prognosis.
