Competitive Sales Comparison (USA)

GMC Canyon sales performance during the second quarter of 2021 keeps the midsize pickup truck in sixth (and last) place in its segment in terms of cumulative sales volume, behind the Toyota Tacoma in first place, the new Ford Ranger in second place (see running Ford Ranger sales), the all-new Jeep Gladiator in third, the Nissan Frontier in fourth, and the Canyon’s corporate cousin – the Chevrolet Colorado – in fifth place (see running Chevy Colorado sales),

The Canyon’s sub-3 percent growth rate was the lowest in its segment during the quarter with exception to the Chevy Colorado, which was the only model to post a decline. The Nissan Frontier and Jeep Gladiator were the highest, with nearly 78 and over 53 percent, respectively.

During Q2 2021, the GMC Canyon saw its share of the midsize pickup truck segment shrink from 4 to 3 percent and the Colorado saw its share drop from 15 to 9 percent. Meanwhile, the Toyota Tacoma saw its share increase from 39 percent to 42 percent. Ford Ranger segment share rose from 19 to 20 percent, the Jeep Gladiator’s segment share was up to 17 from 15 percent, and the Nissan Frontier grew from 7 to 9 percent.

It’s worth noting that combined deliveries of the two GM offerings – the GMC Canyon and Chevy Colorado – totaled 20,123 units, resulting in a 12 percent segment share for The General. That’s good enough for fourth place in the segment, which only outpaces the Nissan Frontier.

The mid-size mainstream pickup truck segment expanded over 33 percent to 172,749 units during the second quarter of 2021, meaning that Canyon sales were outpaced by the average segment growth rate.

The GM Authority Take

The slight increase in GMC Canyon sales during Q2 2021 underperformed the segment average as a result of substantially limited inventory at the retail level. The circumstance was caused by downtime at the GM Wentzville plant as a result of the ongoing microchip shortage, with the plant seeing significant production cuts during the first and second quarters of the 2021 calendar year.

GM has also partaken in building incomplete units of the GMC Canyon and its corporate cousin, the Chevy Colorado. The automaker has been shipping units to dealers as they were completed with the appropriate semiconductor hardware.

We expect GMC Canyon sales to rebound substantially in the near term future, so long as supply improves. In fact, there seems to be a healthy uptick in interest in the updated 2021 Canyon.

  1. Why does the Chevy out sell the GMC ?
For me it’s the grill. It’s to big.
I have the Colorado Diesel and it is amazing on fuel. It’s hard to believe that the little 2.8 can be so impressive for such a small engine.
There is no drowning sound when driving around the city. What idiot came up with that?
GM discontinuing the diesel is a big mistake.
30 plus mpg is easy on the wallet. And pulling my travel trailer at 6000lbs is no problem.

    1. Could the numbers also be attributed to GM’s transmission issues and their reluctance to rectify the issue for many loyal costumers?

      1. Bothe the Colorado and the Canyon are basically the same inside and out except for the front end.
And they use the same transmission options.
But since you brought it up. MARY SHOULD HAVE HER HAT HANDED TO HER FOR NOT RECTIFYING THE TRANSMISSION ISSUES.
And the 5.3 cylinder deactivation issues.
How many loyal GM customers have been ripped off while she collects her $40,000,000.00 a year
        Totally disgusting…
