GM Benchmarking Ford F-350 Super Duty Dually

The practice of automakers benchmarking each other’s vehicles is nothing new. In fact, just yesterday, GM Authority broke news that GM was benchmarking the VW ID.4. Today, we have (arguably) an even more interesting example, as we caught General Motors benchmarking its the Ford F-350 Super Duty.

The heavy duty pickup truck in question from The General’s cross-town rival is a dually in Platinum trim with the 6.7L Power Stroke V8 Turbo Diesel engine. It was testing on the North South Straight of GM’s Milford Proving Ground.

Ford’s 6.7L Power Stroke has what the automaker claims is best-in-class 475 horsepower at 2,600 rpm and 1,050 pound-feet of torque at 1,600 rpm driving a 10-speed automatic transmission. By comparison, the GM 6.6L L5P turbo-diesel Duramax V8 is rated at 445 horsepower at 2,800 rpm and 910 pound-feet of torque at 1,600 rpm. It’s mated to an “Allison” 10-speed automatic transmission. The legendary powerplant combination is used in both the 2020, 2021 and 2022 Chevy Silverado HD and GMC Sierra HD.

For reference, the list below shows a list of the four heavy-duty trucks currently on the market, including both GM trucks as well as their rivals, plus their respective powertrains and output figures.

The Chevy Silverado HD and GMC Sierra HD trucks will get refreshed for the 2024 model year. GM Authority spies recently caught the 2024 GMC Sierra HD undergoing testing back in May, followed by the 2024 Chevy Silverado HD in August. Initially planned for the 2023 model year, the refresh will now be delayed until 2024. As GMA exclusively reported earlier this year, the refresh will bring about various updates – including power gains to the L5P engine, which should bring it more in line with the Power Stroke, at least on paper.

We’ll have more about the 2023 HD refresh on the way, so stay tuned and be sure to subscribe to GM Authority for more Silverado news, Chevy news, GMC Sierra news, GMC news, and around-the-clock GM news coverage.

  1. I just traded my 2019 GMC denali 2500 for a 2022 F-350 King Ranch, tired of the cheap thin seats , recall letters including todays new recall of the Duramax glow plug issues . 72K for a truck with cheap blown plastic interior, cheap black unfinished wheel lip moldings , plastic bumper steps, cheap good year tires , cheap tail gate handle, and it never had any wow factor to it.
super nice interior on the ford, nice seats , two tone paint , michelin tires , 12″ screen with great clarity , and the power and speed from the 1050 lb torque diesel is insane over the 900 lb in the duramax. the 10 speed trans is great. Gm is nice, but they need to get it together.

    1. They can’t afford to get it together after they pay Mary her 40,000,000.00 a year there is no money left………..
Years ago Ford was a joke with cheap interiors and no technology in there vehicles. This made GM look good.
But now GM is not keeping up at all. And they are trying to make money by using the cheapest parts available. No stock of said parts and long wait times to get your vehicle repaired will bite them soon enough….
GM is in critical condition with there lack of leadership…..

      1. That’s not the way I remember it. Ford got the upper trim truck thing going back in the 80’s with the Eddie Bauer trim for the F-150, Bronco and so on. GM took notice and started the Denali lineup in response to Ford. GM was to busy trying to keep Buick, Olds, and Cadillac land yachts alive and didn’t realize the potential of luxury trucks and SUVs. In 1997 Ford introduced the F-150 Lariat and it was the only truck with a leather interior around. Ford also released the Harley Davidson F-150 and GMC tried to respond with the C3 but it was too late. Ford had already released the King Ranch which was the first half ton with a crew cab, short bed, leather and a sunroof which is still the standard to this day. GM would respond a year later with the Sierra Denali.

        1. Back when the Eddie Bower edition came out, Ford was using things like stick on rubber step covers that were glued on to the side steps on there trucks and then fell off in a few months.
The Eddie Bower seats were the only thing they had.
They still had 4 watt antique radios with tiny speakers and no bass.
Even with the Eddie Bower seats they didn’t come close to the standard GM interior. Ford had to do something.
Look at the basic Blazer vs Bronco II interiors of that era. GM was way a head.
Look at Fords use of 4 bolts lugs on there cars including mustang.
Ford always had old man looking interiors with extreme cheap looking design.
Before you get all defensive…… I owned the Bronco II not the Blazer.
Because I didn’t understand why anyone would want a gorgeous interior for off roading.
The big joke was the cheap ass juice can under the hood on the Ford. Used for a vacuum canister…..

My 87 Grand Am interior compared to the Ford Tempo or Topaz
Ford had nothing to compete with GM back then.
Eddie Bower was a desperate attempt at keeping up.

But over the last 20 years things have really changed at Ford. I still think there is some amazing problems with there products.
How about if you crack or break your tail light lens on a F150 that has the sensor for blind spot monitoring ……. That will cost you 1000.00 just for the part…
How do I know…….my boss cracked his..

How about the Chevy Z24 with the 2.8 then updated to the 3.1 with. Cowl induction and 5 speed manual and aluminum wheels with Eagle GTs 60 series
And priced well below the Mustang..
I could go on and on……..

          1. You are all over the place. Please get back on topic. We can find something bad to say about both of them. You are entitled to your opinion but Ford has been pushing the truck segment for some time now. The last generation F150 in 2014 was the first truck to have LED lights, a panoramic moonroof, massaging seats, adaptive cruise control, lane keep, night vision, 360 camera and the list goes on. Relax man

You go around the country now and ask people younger then 18 what happened on 9/11 they have no idea what that is. We aren’t going to take responsibility for something the sitting us president allowed and took part in planning. When will america take responsibility for all the destruction you caused over here that is my question what soldier will be charged for war crimes for the hospitals bombed with kids inside them, the thousands of homes that bombed to nothing what America “leader” will be help responsible for that?

When someone says something outlandish (initial poster) it’s inviting an opinion whether asked for directly or indirectly. The cool thing about staying on-topic is your opinion is part of the discussion. The reason I took issue with your comment is you didn’t come here to talk about trucks, you only came to leave another snarky Trump remark. That makes you the exact definition of a Troll! If you came here to actually talk about trucks I never would have said a thing. If you think I still didn’t answer your question then reading comprehension is not your strong suit.

      2. I agree it’s not 90% I’m in NM and if I had to guess I’d say it’s 55% Ford 35% ram and 10% gm and I’m counting both the Silverado and Sierra together. It’s unfortunate I like gm but over the last 4-6 years they have lost a big share at least from what I see. I hope the new model refresh gets people to buy more of them again. I know people knock ram but they seem to be gaining more then anyone several of my friends ditched there fords and Silverado’s for ram longhorn editions.

    1. The company I work for goes through a lot of trucks.
We had 2 of the Ram cumins and both were beautiful trucks but both were sent to auction as Ram couldn’t keep them on the road. They were at the dealer more than at work.

We had the top of the line Ford 6.7 Platinum and everyone complained about how bad it wonders on the road. Ford couldn’t fix it. Changed tires and alignment but nothing worked. It ate tires too. Then the fuel filter blew a hole in the top and sprayed diesel over everything under the hood. It was one thing after another with the Ford.

So it went and a GM 6.6 was bought. That truck was amazing for the first 2 years and then it dropped a valve and had to go in and have the cab removed to repair the prob.
But that was the only issue in 4 years of torture.

I pulled some massive weights with all three trucks. The Ram interior was amazing but the engine didn’t seem to have the low end to make it impressive.
The Ford Interior had everything you could possibly think of. And I mean everything. The engine pulled like a freight train. But the steering would wear you out after a few hrs.
The GM was lacking when it came to interior but that engine was the quietest of all 3 and the Alison transmission was noticeably better than the rest. The truck didn’t wonder and was so easy to drive long distance. It was also the truck that spent the least amount of time at the dealership…

  9. The GM HD trucks have been great for me. My newest one is a 2020 CC 3500, LTZ, flat bed. We run an excavation company and all they do is pull at or above the max trailer capacity. We live out West, and pull up and down mnt passes. These trucks earn their keep. Few issues, the only truck that I was not happy with was a GMC 5500 4X4. Overall, they keep performing, and I keep buying them. As long as that continues, we will continue to be GM customers.

As far as percentages of trucks that pull, I think it is about an even 3 way split as far as trucks that pull here. The latest version of the GM HD’s has become a very common sight pulling. No question the improved specs of GM HD trucks has increased their market share, certainly in my area. It shouldn’t have taken that long to make that happen, but at least it has.

There is certainly room for improvement and I look forward to the MCE HD trucks when they come out.

  10. The place I work at (telecom internet and cable provider) is nearly all Ford trucks (bucket trucks) and the contractors that come in are probably nine Fords to one GM and no GM bucket trucks we do have a 2010 or so Silverado 1500 runabout and all the vans are Chevy Express.

    1. You own 10 work trucks supposedly but claim you would not drive a Ford if someone paid you that sounds like a lie.

      1. Maybe Dodge Ram. You can keep ur Fiat. Rams are rated as the worst trucks on the road for longterm ownership/ reliability.

        1. That’s just not true.

        2. Lol you can keep your fiat which is Italian compared to gm which is China. You have a small brain I can tell.

  12. peter, 800000 km trucks are 500K mile trucks, and your saying they had problems , yea probably so. 99% dont keep trucks 20 years, some do. Gm has many recall problems, more than Ford even. GM still has 4500 and 5500 trucks sitting from 2019 – 2021 and they are giving them away cause they made mistakes building because GM does a lot of cost cutting crap, and everyone knows it too thats why there out bench marking a Ford. , the duramax and real allison of years pre 2019 and below are good motors, but dont have the torque of a ford or cummins , peroid. GM new allision is branded. its a joke , more cost cutting, GM seats suck , they come out of the factory thin and hard. cheap interiors, cheap black plastics all over the exterior, stupid mounted mirrors on doors, cheap good year tires, no two tone paint. , you all take that denali or high country name plate off the door and GM looks like a cheap work truck for 85K

    2. And they cost sooooo much u might as well go get an old 250-350 for a 1/8th the price and have a luxury car on the side for fun.

  14. We also have a Chevy dump truck at work with the L5P 6.6 and we have had issues with the NOX sensor but 4 years and no other issues…

My personal truck is a Colorado diesel and it’s been amazing. It gets over 30 mpg and pulls my 6000lbs travel trailer with ease. Pulling the trailer I get between 16 and 18 mpg.

What I would like to get across to GM Ford and Ram is that reliability is what we the buying public want.
Stand behind your vehicles. Use quality parts. Keep parts in stock.

I have read some horror stories about people waiting weeks to get there truck back from the dealer. Due to lack of parts. Poorly trained technicians ect.

Build a quality product and the customers will come…..
Really it doesn’t matter what you drive as long as it’s an American truck.

Why can’t I get a part overnight if I will pay the shipping?
Dealers need to do a much better job because as it is now it’s really bad………

    1. People want high power Cadillacs with beds these days. And thats what they make. More techy and comforts. The people like you and me that want a good solid reliable work truck, will never be able to afford these things. And even if you got one, youd be to scared to USE it. And honestly that’s fine. If u notice, the manufacturers focus so much on the comforts, that they make basic ass mistakes with the tranny, motor and frame. These arent work trucks. I wouldnt buy a truck past 2010. Late 90s early 2000s is where its at.

  16. Death wobble, and remember when Ford denied the fuel injectors even had a problem then didn’t cover it. I watched ford mechanic straight disrespect owners over that issue. As far as the seat I don’t like swimming in my seat. So, gm or Cummins for me.

    1. I don’t like Ford either but when it comes to disrespecting customers lower case gm is king

      Reply
      1. Yes I agree. I read a lot and gm is king at not supporting the customers after the sale.
The majority of issues I have read are from gm owners. Trucks sitting for weeks waiting to be repaired. No parts available. Or multiple trips to the dealer to get repaired.
There warranty has more loop holes than I thought possible.
Most of the loop holes are in the pollution control system.
And in the Powertrain where certain parts of the transmission and fuel injection are not covered. There is other items not covered also. It’s a crap shoot.
Remember Mary (CEO) of lowercase gm … witch is the stupidest decision her $40,000,000.00 yearly paycheck has brought to the company doesn’t work for the buyer only the investors.
Mary there will be no buyers if you don’t support your customers… Wake up pls…..

    2. Those are some really sad low reasons not to go with ford. I mean damn you prolly jus dealt with an asshole tech. And id rather have fuel injector problems, than a Mexican made mis torqued transmission coming out brand new with 75k+ equivalent miles on the tranny …..like gm

  17. How sad the things I see posted here in reference to bother Ford and GM. However, yes, Ford did go cheap on the interior of their trucks in the past, yet, funny that my 1994 F-250 XL is pushing the 300K mark on the odometer, and yet, its still out pulling trucks built by Chevy/GMC and Dodge of today. Plus, while yes, I like the looks of todays Ford trucks, my 94 still has better class of style ques. Its a much better truck for its era, and most of todays trucks, and it can still crawl off road better then some of the trucks I’ve seen from todays market. The power plant under the hood, for a gas powered engine, is way better then the coil over design of todays truck engines, and has a whole lot less headaches. As much as I would love newer seats in my truck, it is my daily driver because it is more comfortable then even my wife’s Buick. In fact I would even love to drive my 72 F-250 more if I could. These trucks still look better then anything out there today.

  23. Shane Kaiser is right it’s a 3 way split between the HDs here in Idaho, everywhere you there is some form of a new one, they all seem good, just depends on the brand you want!
