Back in August, GM Authority brought you the very first spy shots of the upcoming Silverado HD refresh in prototype form draped in camouflage while undergoing testing. Today, just days after GM revealed the refreshed 2022 Chevy Silverado 1500, we are getting an even more revealing look yet at the updated front end of the upcoming 2024 Silverado HD.
Before we go on, we should note that GM originally planned to refresh the Chevy Silverado HD for the 2023 model year, but the updates might now take place for the 2024 model year. GM is considering pushing back the Mid-Cycle Enhancement of the heavy duty pickup, otherwise known as an MCE, due to several factors stemming from the COVID-19 pandemic and the ongoing global semiconductor chip shortage.
Back to the prototype: our new photos give us a closer look at the updated HD’s placeholder headlight/LED arrangement. While production lighting has yet to make it to roadgoing prototypes, there are indications of significant changes for the updated front fascia. All signs point to GM going for a more conventional face for the 2024 Silverado HD, stepping away from the (arguably) polarizing styling applied to the current Chevy Silverado HD, which debuted for the 2020 model year.
The placeholder lights show primary lighting units running horizontally at the top corners of the front fascia, with a large LED strip running on a downward diagonal below. If this arrangement eventually translates to production units, then it appears that the large, vertically stacked headlight clusters used on the current Chevy Silverado HD are going away.
Just as the 2019 Silverado 1500’s criticized “sideburn” air curtain design was revised on the just-revealed 2022 Silverado 1500 refresh, it appears that the polarizing two-tiered lighting design that defined the 2020 Silverado HD is getting a more conventional treatment for the 2024 Silverado HD refresh.
This 2024 Chevy Silverado HD prototype shows a new grille behind the camo with the Chevy bow tie visible on the upper-third of the grille, much like that of the new Silverado 1500. A series of clean, horizontal bars make up the new grille on the prototype.
What’s more, the front camo does little to hide new chiseled styling applied to the front bumper. The soft, rather formless design of the current HD’s bumper will make way for a more expressively detailed design treatment, potentially mirroring that of the 2022 Silverado 1500 refresh.
While the 2024 Silverado HD prototype has a camouflaged interior, we expect the interior to get a drastic and welcome makeover similar to that of new 2022 Silverado 1500. In fact, the modern, high-tech dash and upgraded interior of the refreshed Silverado 1500 will most likely be ported over to the 2024 Silverado HD. Additionally, the two-interior strategy, wherein LT and higher models get the all-new cabin while lower-end Work Truck and Custom models get the carry-over cabin, will likely be in place – much like it is on the refreshed 1500 models.

In addition to the revised exterior and interior, GM’s updated heavy duty trucks will also feature a boost in power and torque, as first reported by GM Authority.
The current Silverado HD is selling quite well in the marketplace. Sales increased 26.4 percent to 78,430 units during the first six months of 2021.

Out of all the refreshes this is the one I’m the most curious to see. With the 1500’s being released as a mid ’22 I don’t understand the HD’s being pushed clear back to ’24. The only thing that makes sense is if they need more time for the reported powertrain updates. I know this has been discussed before but I’m still hoping to see these as a ’23!
Refreshed HD’s will arrive as 2023 Models about a year from today…
That was the original plan. Not any more.
The HD plans remain unchanged. LD was moved back 6 months only due to parts shortages, the engineering and validation is done.
Might want to triple check that Donavan. The HDs are now 2024 because of the inventory build-up caused by chips. There’s also less of a rush on the HDs because they’re outperforming all rivals in terms of consideration and sales.
If it does get the conventional lightning treatment and looks similar to the New 22 1500, I wouldn’t mind it at all, I think Gm did well on the 1500 refresh and hopefully they will on this one. Im tempted by the new 1500 which is something I wouldn’t have said 3 years ago when it comes to The T1 gm trucks. Though Im waiting to see what the HD will look like and what improvements it brings.
I Just watched a video from TFL, they received info on the down low (rumor until verified) that the updated 6.6 Duramax will produce 505 hp and 1085 ft/lbs of torque. The current Powerstroke is making 475 hp and 1050 ft/lbs so they are not unrealistic numbers. They also kept referring to the refreshed Duramax as a 2023 so who knows. Makes you wonder if the power wars will ever end Lol! I like big power numbers as much as the next guy, and I’m glad the Duramax is getting a power bump, that said I personally I think we would be better served if the HD manufactures eventually agreed to a plateau and shifted all their efforts towards longevity and reliability. (Edit): I didn’t see Andrews post until this one was sent, sorry for the repost about the rumored power numbers.
I’m a gas guy, 10 speed for the 6.6 please!
With rising fuel prices the diesel will save you money, and more fun to drive.
It won’t save me money for nearly 6 years where I live…. and that’s assuming interest rates don’t exist. As my savings will go towards my mortgage, there is no way a diesel would ever pay for itself in my sistuation, even with resale value.
You will never get a return on investment on how much more the diesel costs to buy. Diesel isn’t a cost saving decision in HD trucks, it’s a need or more often “because diesel” option.
BS. What you save you put back into more expensive fuel filters and oil changes and when parts start breaking you end up losing. DEF fluid is not free. My LML fuel filters are 35$ and oil changes are cost more than gas.
No it wont. A lot of places diesel is more money than gas.
The two interior strategy is more likely the new interior is not made for actual work and is not durable enough to be used in work and fleet environment so they have to separate them.
I am not sure what information your basing your theory on? I think a better guess is that to keep the pricing in line on the lower trim levels, they are utilizing an existing interior that is totally functional without the flat screen TV in the dash. Commercial vehicle purchases are based, in a large part, on cost and few are going to pay extra for the high end interior. If the new interior on the LT’s and above don’t hold up to actual work, feel free to say I told you so. I will be waiting…
The current HD trucks look pretty aggressive and nice I hope they don’t ruin it.
Hopefully they improve the front. It has been hideous since 2020
