The new 2022 Subaru Forester Wilderness model has made its official debut and is ready to go head-to-head with the similarly capable GMC Terrain AT4.
The 2022 Subaru Forester Wilderness gives the popular crossover added capability thanks to its longer coil springs and shock absorbers, which have raised the ground clearance by 0.5 inches to 9.2-inches. This model variant also gets standard Yokohama GEOLANDAR all-terrain tires mounted on model exclusive 17-inch alloy wheels with a matte black finish, along with a standard full-size spare tire.
Additionally, the 2022 Subaru Forester Wilderness gets a unique front fascia treatment, larger wheel arch cladding, a front skid plate, unique hexagonal LED fog lights and water-resistant StarTex seating upholstery. Finally, this new Forester model will also receive a ladder-type roof rack with a moving load capacity of 220 lb. and stationary capacity of 800 lbs – allowing users to install larger roof tents on the vehicle. The only option available on the Forester Wilderness is a technology package that adds an 8.0-inch Multimedia Navigation system, Harman Kardon premium sound system and a power liftgate.
All Forester models are powered by a 2.5-liter four-cylinder boxer engine producing 182 horsepower and 172 pound-feet of torque. Prices start at $25,195 for the base model, while the Wilderness starts at $32,820.
With Subaru introducing a more capable version of its own compact crossover, it seems other automakers are following in General Motors’ footsteps after it introduced the new AT4 sub-brand on its various GMC product offerings. Like the Wilderness, AT4 models come standard with black-painted alloy wheels, rugged off-road tires and additional underbody protection, giving them a bit more capability than standard non-AT4 models.
As a reminder, the 2022 GMC Terrain rides on the GM D2 platform, and is available only with the 1.5L I4 LYX turbocharged gasoline engine, which produces 170 horsepower and 203 pound-feet of torque. The 1.5L engine is mated exclusively to GM’s nine-speed automatic transmission.

Subaru has that niche, rapidly becoming mainstream, market position, is far more popular than GMC.
The future of GMC is Hummer plus Yukon and Sierra until the brand builds a Jeep-challenging Terrain and Arcadia.
Subaru Achilles heel is their CVT, when it gets in a rough situation it just quits and refuses to go any further. The ECM says no you may harm the transmission so no we ain’t going to do this. Then you can back back down the mountain you were trying to climb.
The CVT Transmission is the only down side to the Subaru Forester. I do believe that besides the boxer 4 engine that you can order one with the turbo.
