2022 Buick Envision Introduces New GS Version In China

As GM Authority exclusively anticipated in late August, General Motors just officially launched the 2022 Buick Envision range with the introduction of the all-new GS version of the crossover in China. A few days after presenting the new Envision GS at the 2021 Chengdu Motor Show, the automaker begins its marketing as the most striking novelty of the 2022 Envision family in the Asian country.

The 2022 Buick Envision S, as the second-generation variant is known in China, represents the second model year of Buick‘s redesigned compact crossover and comes with notable changes from the model launched in July 2020. In addition to introducing the GS version as a trim level, the 2022 Envision S adds a 48V mild hybrid powertrain as standard and offers a number of customization accessories.

Aesthetically, the new 2022 Buick Envision S GS maintains the same design that the nameplate introduced last year without including even the slightest change to highlights the sporty character of the body, as is usual in the GS variants of the brand. In fact, the 2022 Envision S GS is identical to the previous Sport Edition and is nothing more than a name change for that trim level.

What’s also striking is that the 2022 Buick Envision S GS does not even include the distinctive emblem on the front grille, but the acronym for Grand Sport is only discreetly present at the rear. The only aesthetic change that the new version of the Envision brings is the red painted front brake calipers and a set of optional 20-inch wheels.

On a mechanical level, the 2022 Buick Envision S for the Chinese market now comes standard with a mild hybrid powertrain that combines a 2.0L turbocharged engine with SAIC-GM’s 48V system, consisting of an electric motor and a 48V battery. The system offers an output of 233 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque, mated to GM’s nine-speed automatic transmission.

The 2022 Buick Envision S and all-new 2022 Envision S GS are now on sale throughout the Buick dealer network in China, with a high level of standard equipment and new custom Alcantara interior trim. As we reported last July, 2022 Envision is expected to soon include a new 1.5L Turbo engine for range-topping variants in China as well.

Here are the suggested prices of the 2022 Buick Envision S in the Chinese market:

  • Envision S Elite: 219,900 CNY (about $34,200 USD at the current exchange rate)
  • Envision S GS Smart: 239,900 CNY ($37,300 USD)
  • Envision S GS AWD: 249,900 CNY ($38,800 USD)
  • Envision S GS Enjoy: 259,900 CNY ($40,400 USD)
  • Envision S Avenir: 279,900 CNY ($43,500 USD)

  1. It is funny that they spelled out “Alcantara” on the dash. Good looking vehicle (really digging the 2-tone interior). It definitely makes XT4 utterly pointless. Or maybe that’s the goal.
