This 2022 Silverado 1500 Work Truck Prototype Has A Strange Interior

Just yesterday, GM Authority brought you new spy photos of the refreshed 2022 Silverado Work Truck, caught in prototype form testing on public roads ahead of a debut next month. Now, we’re checking out the interior of this refreshed model prototype, and things are, well, a little strange.

Although the refreshed 2022 Chevy Silverado is expected to introduce a completely interior overhaul, this particular Work Truck prototype appears to have a layout that is identical the current Silverado. The center stack, dash, and control layout are all unchanged. Even the shifter, which is expected to move to a new push-button configuration similar to the next-generation 2021 GMC Yukon, is the old column-mounted mechanism.

It should be noted that this isn’t our first glimpse of the refreshed 2022 Silverado cabin space. Back in October of 2020, we brought you spy photos of a different 2022 Chevy Silverado 1500 prototype equipped with a large infotainment screen in the center stack, no column-shifter, and a green-rimmed steering wheel, the latter of which indicates the presence of GM Super Cruise. These new photos don’t show any of that (as a reminder, Super Cruise is expected to be offered as an option for the High Country trim level, and will not be available for Work Truck models).

All of this leads us to two possible conclusions. The first is that this particular 2022 Silverado 1500 Work Truck is an older prototype with the old interior layout. Another possibility is that the 2022 Silverado Work Truck trim will not receive the updated interior, unlike higher trim levels. However, from what we know, all refreshed 2022 Silverado models will get an updated cockpit, albeit in different guises (that is, the High Country trim will have a different interior than the Work Truck).

Either way, we won’t have to wait too much longer to get some official details, as the refreshed 2022 Chevy Silverado 1500 is set to debut on September 9th. When it arrives, the new pickup will feature a restyled front fascia and rear end, new wheels, and new exterior colors. The refresh will also introduce the new ZR2 off-roader trim, while the naturally aspirated 4.3L V8 LV3 gasoline engine naturally aspirated 5.3L V8 L82 gasoline engine will be deleted from the powertrain lineup.

  1. Shocker. A work truck package PROTOTYPE has a plain interior from the previous generation. Must be a slow news day.

  2. Honestly, the problem with the custom and WT trim interiors wasn’t the dash. it was the armrest and center seat without any storage. It was the doors that sported less storage space than the last generation, albeit a bit more functional. the current Silverado dash is still the cleanest, most intuitive to use BY FAR. if they introduce a new flashy interior for the higher trims, and then keep the current dash and address the above complaints for the lower trims, and do a hybrid for the mid trims, then yes, that’s a win win win. What this photo doesnt show is any change to the doors, seats and consol. That is the most critical points on the WT trim.

that said, doesnt it look like that armrest features storage? also the doors are still camouflaged, and is that a push button start? i thought the current WT was still a key ignition the custom comfort package was required for push button start.

    1. yep just need, center console storage in top and power drives seat as standard

  3. If it is a BASE MODEL work truck, who cares what the interior looks like…they aren’t all meant to be Cadillac’s.

  4. That better not be the interior that the Base Silverado keeps. That interior was Two Generations behind the day it was shown let alone now.

  6. No big shocker, before the T1 came out they were building T1s with last gen sheet metal.

    1. budlar or anyone:

What are the differences between the last generation sheet metal that you mention in your comment and the current sheet metal used on work trucks?

I assume that both types of steel sheet metal that gm used/ uses are cold rolled sheet steel versus hot rolled sheet steel. I understand that hot rolled sheet steel is scrap melt, or an inferior grade of sheet steel, with more impurities in it. That cold rolled, steel from virgin iron ore melt, has the least impurities in it, and is a premium grade of steel.

      Please clarify. Thanks.

      1. Difference between hot rolled and cold rolled are:
Hot rolled is processed while still hot to the thickness desired and left to cool. Will have “mill scale” residue that needs to be removed by further processing amongst other things.

Cold rolled could be the same grade as hot rolled however the steel is worked when it is cold and all of the mill scale gets removed during the processing and the end result is clean shiny steel sheet…I’m sure that someone will say otherwise.
Perhaps what he means by second generation steel is what is done to the surface to prevent further oxidation (rust) and that is another operation altogether.

  7. Makes me wonder if the current interior was meant only to be a the WT interior all along. The rush to beat the new Ram to market is still costing GM.

  8. My guess is that truck is a mule and has the current dash in it. Not necessarily what the 2022’s will have. Mules are often hack jobs made to test specific components and do not have all the planned features for the new model. Some also have mixed up trim levels

  9. Great idea, smaller screen and same old cheap, crappy interior for the real trucksters! Hope this makes it to the High Country allbeit with a smaller screen and more decontenting so gm can pay for Bolt fiasco!

    1. No worries. I like my cheap crappy interior. Easy to clean, simple to use, plus I have a ton of camera views. Where you at Ford,Ram. Guess those guys are trying to help the idiots that can’t back a trailer out. When I see y’all coming down the road with a trailer. I’m thinking rookie!

      1. I mean, if you need 25 different camera views to successfully handle towing/maneuvering a trailer I would also guess that you are a rookie at towing.

  10. It’s a woke interior. No white supremacy, rather binary, fluid non discrimination crap interior. Free subway tokens.

    1. That requires the Jan 6 Package for a WS interior…..

  11. Is this click bait? It has been so widely reported that the 2022 Silverado will be called Silverado limited and will have almost zero changes. Obviously, that is what is pictured. Perhaps it was disguised for bureaucratic reasons, perhaps as a joke. Yes, the “real” 2022 Silverado will be intoduced in September, but won’t go into production until midyear probably next March.

  12. Looks like there are some changes on that WT Silverado proto’s interior. It has auto engine on/off button switch, a 120V plug and it looks like a lane assist button too next to the auto on/off engine switch.

  13. I’m an old school person and I have a 2019 Silverado and yes it does have the old plain Jane interior, but the way I look at it , I couldn’t be happier because it leaves a lot of room for me to make changes and add a personal touch to it.

  14. My issue with every Silverado after 2007 w/ lower trim levels is the seats. If you don’t opt for power seats, then your manual seats don’t have any form of height adjustment. Not every person who drives a truck is 6’5″.

I’m 6′ and my truck needed repairs after someone backed into me. Insurance had me use a 2016 Silverado during the time mine was in the shop. It had manual seats. I even googled to see if I was missing something regarding height adjustment, I felt like I was sitting on the floor. To my surprise, the option to raise height is exclusive to power seat owners. They even sell bolt on kits to allow you to raise the seat heights lol

  15. Would have thought GM Authority would already know the interior refresh has been pushed back to at least mid-cycle of the 22s and potentially to 23 amid the semiconductor shortage. Initial 22 builds will have the same interior as as the 21s down.

  16. My only complaint with the truck is that the front grill looks cheap. I’ve had toys that looked better.

  17. Looks like they are just trying to appeal to the broke takuaches that love to turn the trucks into “Cadillac trucks”.

  18. Well now we know what the base models will look like.

  19. This is a stupid article. It’s a prototype not a finished product. Of course it’s going to be similar, who ever wrote this needs to quit what they’re doing and get a new job. Pathetic waste of an article.

  20. Didn’t anyone else notice that the column shifter is not in the Park position? The column shifter might be there, but it doesn’t appear to be functional. The push button transmission could easily be there but disguised.

Push button transmission is an answer to a question nobody asked.

  21. Oh, I hope they don’t delete the 4.3 litre engine – which IS A V-6, not a V-8. It’s a powerful and relatively economical motor.
I don’t want a bloody troublesome turbo, neither.
And don’t even get me started on a stupid “smart” push button transmission… Give me the column shifter, and make it quicker to get out of Reverse and into Drive. The delay is too long – and it’s dangerous.

    1. The V6 has been long discontinued and the column shift will be when the refreshed 22 hits production.
There have been criticism of the column shifter since the ’19 redesign because many feel it is outdated and takes space unnecessarily, myself I drive with my left and rest my right on the shifter so it is close to the wheel in case of emergency plus although seldom used the +/- gear selector is handy.

  22. Are you sure that’s a 2022 refresh? If so why does it have a window sticker on it?
