The 2022 Chevy Silverado ZR2 is coming, slated to slot in above the Chevy Silverado Trail Boss as an even-more capable off-roader model. Now, we’re taking another look at the upcoming Silverado ZR2 in prototype form thanks to this fresh batch of spy photos.
Although it’s obstructed by a heavy set of camouflage, the new 2022 Chevy Silverado ZR2 will boast a new grille and front fascia treatment, as well as a prominent front skid plate to protect the greasy bits above. This particular prototype model also has faux outer caps on the front bumper, but we expect the Silverado ZR2 to offer a higher approach angle with a clear shot between the tire and obstacles. The new front fascia will be complemented by a new rear fascia. Also look for matching ZR2 badging, similar to the badges found on the mid-size Chevy Colorado ZR2.
As seen prior, this Chevy Silverado ZR2 prototype is running taller Goodyear Wrangler Territory MT tires measured at 33 inches, as compared to 32-inch tires equipped by the current Chevy Silverado Trail Boss.
Naturally, the off-road-ready Silverado ZR2 will have upgraded suspension to help it conquer the rough stuff, including greater overall ground clearance and a more robust four-leaf-spring suspension in the rear. Also expect to find MultiMatic DSSV shocks, similar to the Colorado ZR2.
Under the hood, the 2022 Chevy Silverado ZR2 is expected to initially offer the naturally aspirated 6.2L V8 L87 gasoline engine. Also found on the current 2021 Chevy Silverado 1500, the L87 is rated at 420 horsepower and 460 pound-feet of torque.
What’s more, the 2022 Chevy Silverado ZR2 will be equipped with the Preferred Equipment Group (PEG) 3LT, building on the features of the Chevy Silverado LT and LT Trail Boss.
The new off-roader was previously teased with a short video showing some off-roading testing on a wet, muddy surface. Look for an official debut next month with the introduction of the fully refreshed 2022 Chevy Silverado 1500, which will also include an overhauled interior and new technology.
