More Than 20,000 Full-Size GM SUVs Were Exported To Foreign Countries In 2020

Full-size GM SUVs are hugely popular, but not just in the U.S. market. In fact, according to General Motors, more than 20,000 full-size GM SUVs were exported to foreign markets in the 2020 calendar year.

The full-size GM SUVs lineup is produced at the automaker’s facility in Arlington, Texas.

“Everything is bigger in Texas – including the global reach of our GM Arlington Assembly plant. Each day nearly 5,500 team members assemble full-size SUVs, many of which are exported as far away as the Middle East,” General Motors states.

The full-size GM SUVs lineup includes the Cadillac Escalade and Escalade ESV, the GMC Yukon and Yukon XL, the Chevy Suburban, and the Chevy Tahoe. According to General Motors, these vehicles are exported to markets in 32 countries around the world.

In total, General Motors exported 21,008 full-size GM SUVs to foreign markets in the 2020 calendar year. The Chevy Tahoe was the most popular model of the lineup, accounting for more than 11,000 of those exports.

Middle East markets were far and away the biggest buyers, scooping up 19,612 units. Russia was next with 843 units, followed by Asia/Pacific markets at 316 units, South America markets with 182 units, and Europe (excluding Russia) with 55 units.

As General Motors points out, the destination country for these models dictates unique modifications specific to that market. These include exterior lighting modifications, window tinting, as well as in-vehicle text and labeling. GM also gives the example of state-automated emergency response systems required for Russian exports, which is similar to OnStar, but is government-controlled and allows local police to communicate with the drivers.

General Motors also specifies that full-size GM SUVs bound for an export model are extensively tested at the automaker’s Milford Proving Grounds for certification.

  • Arabs customize Suburbans for eagle sports. They cut a section of the roof out and equip the vehicle with an elevating seat for bird handling.

  • I am not trying to anger anyone but on a recent news story about the Taliban take over of Kabul, the Taliban troops were using a Chevrolet Silverado as their transport vehicle. I am not sure of the Silverado year as the camera angle was from the rear of the truck. I had to take a double take as it was hard to digest. I wonder how many countries gm trucks are sold to?

    • I am already 10 clicks beyond anger.
There are models produced outside N. America that are not imported and some are imported from N.America in containers,a good percentage that are stolen.

    • You'll see more Ford due to their concentration on government/fleet sales. In fact, the Super Duty has a leaded fuel option (cat delete) to sell to Iraq, which still uses leaded fuel.

  • They need more versatility when it comes to their offerings, in South America only the Tahoe and Suburban are sold, with the Z71 being the only trim offered. Not everyone wants/likes the off-road style.

  • in middle east they don't have RST or high country , even Z71 only come to Taho not with Suburban, the difference is in middle east center console is equipped with two cooling and freezing fridge. as well they don't have captain chairs only the bench

  • land cruiser sales 10 times more with 2 times more of average price per unite , you can do much more chevy , try to be closer to your ppl there.
