Online employer review site Glassdoor released its Top CEOs in Canada 2021 list this week, which ranks General Motors CEO and chair Mary Barra as one of the top ten CEOs in the country.
Barra, the only woman CEO of a major automaker, was ranked ninth on the Top CEOs in Canada 2021 list with a Canadian employee approval rating of 97 percent. While Mary Barra is an American citizen who resides in Michigan, this Glassdoor ranking is for companies that operate in Canada, which is why Barra appears on the list. The 59-year old narrowly beat out Apple CEO Tim Cook for the ninth spot on the list.
The top CEO in Canada for 2021 is Barry McInerney, CEO of Mackenzie Investments, who had an approval rating of 99 percent. Other CEOs in the top ten include Rania Llewellyn (Laurentian Bank), Ernie Herrman (Marshalls), Ronald Cohn (Sick Kids Hospital) and Jeffrey Jones III (H&R Block).
Glassdoor’s Top CEOs in Canada 2021 list was put together using employee reviews of their company’s CEO. This differentiates the list from other CEO rankings, which typically use a variety of different metrics to determine the top-performing CEOs in the country. Notably, Barra does not appear on the U.S. version of Glassdoor’s Top CEOs ranking, which placed Boston Consulting Group CEO Rich Lesser in the top spot.
Barra, who was named as the successor to former GM CEO Dan Akerson in late 2013, earned approximately $40.3 million in 2020, which includes her base salary, cash bonus payouts, gains from stock awards, benefits and perquisites. This made Barra the second highest-earning CEO of an American company last year behind Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang. The median GM employee salary in 2020 was $117,566. Based on that figure, Barra’s total compensation was 342 times higher than that of the average white-collar GM employee.
