General Motors and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration have issued a recall for certain 2020 and 2021 model year Chevy Silverado HD and GMC Sierra HD trucks that were shipped with the incorrect factory spare tire.
The problem: affected vehicles were all ordered with either the 20-inch accessory road tire (RPO code REM) or the 18-inch accessory road tire (RPO code Q2V). Despite the 18-inch or 20-inch wheels, the trucks are equipped with a 17-inch spare tire.
The hazards: operating the vehicle with one 17-inch tire and three 18-inch or 20-inch tires can prevent the Anti-Lock Braking System (ABS) from engaging. A vehicle with ABS may have reduced braking performance or may be prone to locking up the tires under heavy braking.
The fix: GM dealers will be instructed to provide the owner with the appropriate spare tire and will apply a new spare tire information label. These repairs will be performed at no cost to the vehicle owner.
Affected components: spare tire.
Affected vehicles:
- 2020 Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD
- 2021 Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD
- 2020 GMC Sierra 2500HD
- 2021 GMC Sierra 2500HD
Number of affected vehicles: a total of 86 vehicles are affected by this problem.
Owners should: GM will notify owners of affected vehicles and instruct them to make an appointment with their dealer. Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed on September 13th, 2021. If owners are unsure whether or not their vehicle is affected by this recall, they can visit my.gm.com/

That’s a special kind of dumb. The 17 inch tires are for dually’s……totally and very obviously different rim.
17 inch wheels are standard on lower SRW trims (Sierra base and SLE; Silverado WT, Custom, LT). Those vehicles come with a 17 inch spare. Higher trims come standard with either 18 (SLT, AT4, LTZ) or 20 inch wheels (Denali, High Country), and come with an 18 inch spare.
According to the recall documents, running an 18 inch spare with 20s is within acceptable tolerances. The issue is the size difference between a 17 spare and 18 wheels so it’s not “dumb” or immediately obvious.
Fix the spare tire, then wipe the egg off GM’s face.
My 2021 Sierra 1500 Elevation has 20 inch tires with the X31 package and the spare that came with it is a 17 inch spare. So will “operating the vehicle with one 17-inch tire and three 18-inch or 20-inch tires can prevent the Anti-Lock Braking System (ABS) from engaging” as they stated above apply to it as well??
The size of the wheel doesn’t tell you much because the tire diameter is what matters and varies significantly depending on the exact size of the tire.
Looking it up at a tire site for the HD:
17s are LT245/75R17 at 660 revs/mi (this varies slightly between tire brands and models)
18s are LT275/70R18 at 617 revs/mi
20s are LT275/65R20 at 605 revs/mi
For LD
17s are 255/70R17 at 668 revs/mi
18s are 265/65R18 at 659 revs/mi
20s are 275/60R20 at 630 revs/mi
So you can see the HD has a big jump between the 17 and 18 that’s much less on the LD.
I looked at it again and realized the 17 inch LD spare is actually a different size from the normal 17s, it’s a 265/70R17 at 656 revs/mi. So GM chose a spare size right in the middle of the range of tire diameters, to maximize compatibility.
Thanks for the reply to my question.
My 20s are the 275/60R20 and my spare 17 is 255/80R17.
Looking it up, a 255/80R17 is 628 revs/mile versus a 275/60R20 at 630 revs/mile, so they’re essentially identical and nothing to worry about.
My 2018 has a17 inch spare but 18 inch factory tires. Why isn’t there a recall on other years?
Come on now !! Can ‘t GM do anything right lately ???
I too have a 2020 GMC Sierra SLT X31 with the upgraded OEM 20″ tires and rims. Mine are OEM Bridgestone 275/60R20 115S M&S. My spare tire is OEM 255/80R17 115S tire. I called GMC Customer Service Recall line and they said they didn’t show any recall on my truck. I read them all the information that the article from GM Authority wrote about. I am hoping that not only are the HD versions in the recall, but the other trucks will also be, if they have BOTH the wrong sizes as described in this article.
