We love a good drag race matchup, especially when one of the competitors is something a bit unexpected. Such is the case here, with an upgraded Chevy Camaro ZL1 taking on the Japanese tech powerhouse that is the second-generation Acura NSX.
While the Chevy Camaro ZL1 is a common sight at the dragstrip, the Acura NSX is not. Originally making its debut in December of 2015, the second-generation NSX packs a hybrid powerplant doling out 573 horsepower and 476 pound-feet of torque, all courtesy of a twin-turbocharged 3.5L V6 engine and no less than three electric motors. Output is put to the ground by way of a nine-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission and all-wheel drive system, with curb weight tipping the scales around 3,850 pounds.
Indeed, the Aura NSX is impressive (and in fact, a new Type S version is coming to challenge the C8 Corvette). However, in the other lane, the competition has its own tricks up its sleeves.
Running opposite the Acura NSX is a Chevy Camaro ZL1, which ups the ante with the supercharged 6.2L V8 LT4 gasoline engine, doling out an equally impressive 650 horsepower and 650 pound-feet of torque. And while the NSX might have more driven wheels, the Camaro is making up the difference with some upgraded drag slicks, which should pair well with the upgraded drag racing surface. Curb weight comes in at 3,900 pounds.
What’s more, it’s entirely possible this particular Chevy Camaro ZL1 is packing a little more firepower than stock, although unfortunately, performance details and specs for this particular example are unavailable.
So then – it’s a matchup between processor power and horsepower, with turbocharged hybrid wizardry competing against a supercharger and slicks. Which of these two rides do you think will come out on top? Let us know by posting in the comments below, then hit play to see it all go down:

Good runs.
The Camaro driver was HORRIFIC off the line…
Geeeeez…
Camaro driver woke up 0.5s in and then burried it
The acura will win with the torque of the gas engine combined with the torque of the hybrid electric motors.
The Acura driver probably used automatic shift instead of shifting it manually to maintain his lead on takeoff. He could have held 1st gear longer and then shifted to maintain take off advantange
Ask BMW Man ???
The Chevy driver forgot to fill up his blinker fluid Reservoir
and who knows if there was any tricks done to the Acura? easy to do with turbos and electric motors. Camaro driver was bad.
Chevy to win.
Like everyone says, the ZL1 reeled in the NSX with a .05 late start to the race. Different race without slicks tho… getting the power to those rear wheels is easy but getting those tires to stick is a hard task for the ZL1. Great show of power. Personally, I would use the 10 sp with a higher stall converter for my launch to make up for AWD and those 4 electric motors at each wheel.
Over a 125k for all that electonic gadgetry AWD pulling power at each wheel is nice but is still fast considering low 11s.
NSX coming after the C8 is going to be a challenge next year and even a greater challenge when the Z06 arrives. Be careful what you ask for NSX…
Both Ford and GM are making hybrid versions of their supercars, and both will cost less and run better than whatever Acura can build.
Always loved the ZL1’s look and power. NSX looks great. Great comeback with the ZL1 though, I’m sure he thought he had it in the bag
And a 2500 HD from 2008 could give them a good run with just a small tune.
Camaro driver snoozed. He eventually caught up…but barely. Had it been a good start, there would have been little contest.
Camaro driver snoozed. Had it been a good start, there would have been no contest for the Camaro.
Can’t be making a sandwich at the starting line. Green means GO. Lol
I’m surprised the Cheby didn’t fall apart down the track 😏
Keep driving your Toyota. Are they reliable, yes they are. If you like boring, fugly looking cars, Toyota is your brand. I’ll keep my ‘17 Buick Encore sport touring AWD. Four season fun, utility and decent fuel economy. (Avg 29 mpg)
Unfortunately, the last Toyota had a stock competitor in this class, it was slower and and sun setted by Toyota.
Why the fk will you put an Asian or European car vs an American trash, this is nonsense, Americans (even if they have European or Japanese ingineers) are far behind this technology
LMAOOOOO… who won… lol, yes that trashy cheby. Not only won but reeled it in like a stinky carp… lol. Hahaha.
I say put an experienced set of drivers behind the wheels of those cars and you might get the same outcome but I wouldn’t be so sure. But hey what do I know I am just a chick… Although I dó knowa little bit about cars…
Im a fan of both muscle cars and high tech cars in which most of them is high tech 2day anyway…….however the Acuras torque is what racing is all about it being able to stick to the surface…..let the air out of the drag slicks on the camaro to get more stick to the strip and the tire will wrinkle the sidewalls and loose that small amount of torque instead of spinning and loosing torque….all that being said The Accura has the computer determining when to back of the accelerator to mantain torque….if it was a quantum computer the Acura would have won……thats why im a fan of digitally enhanced cars . it had nothing to do with American or foreign vehicles. I love Computers…….
@Allsmiles33, true…
the Camaro won the race.
