Competitive Sales Comparison (USA)

Chevy Blazer sales during the second quarter of 2021 increased 4 percent in the U.S. market, which is very welcome news given the supply-level issues associated with the ongoing microchip shortage. The increase in sales during Q2 2021 follows the following performance:

When compared to its expanded segment of 21 total competitors, the Blazer moved up to thirteenth place during Q2 2021. It was outsold by the Toyota Highlander, Ford Explorer, Jeep Grand Cherokee, the Blazer’s larger stablemate – the Chevrolet Traverse – the Honda Pilot, Volkswagen Atlas, Hyundai Santa Fe, Kia Sorento, GMC Acadia, Kia Telluride, Hyundai Palisade, and the Toyota Venza.

On a segment share basis, the Blazer accounted for a 3 percent of the segment, a decline from the 5 percent held in the year-ago quarter. The 3 percent share during Q2 2021 is well behind the 14 percent share held by the segment-leading Toyota Highlander and the Ford Explorer and Jeep Grand Cherokee, which accounted for 9 percent each, followed by the Chevrolet Traverse and Honda Pilot with 8 percent each. The Volkswagen Atlas held 7 percent with the Hyundai Santa Fe following close behind taking 6 percent. The rest of the segment held a 5 percent share or less.

The mainstream mid- and full-size crossover segments, comprised of CUVs with a starting price in the vicinity of $30,000, expanded 54 percent to 595,861 units in Q2 2021, meaning that Blazer sales underperformed the segment average.

Narrowing down the segment to only midsize crossovers with two rows of seating – just like the Blazer – puts the vehicle in fourth place. It was outsold by the Jeep Grand Cherokee (by 32,136 units), Hyundai Santa Fe (by 13,950 units), and Toyota Venza (by 1,621 units). The Ford Edge was the only model to see a decline in sales volume this quarter. All others posted an increase in sales with the Passport reporting the largest increase of 84 percent.

The Blazer’s share of the midsize, two-row CUV segment fell 3 points to 12 percent compared to the year-ago quarter.

The mainstream mid-size, two-row crossover segment expanded nearly 34 percent to 177,852 units during the second quarter of 2021. In this case, Blazer sales still underperformed the segment average.

The GM Authority Take

Chevy Blazer sales faced a multitude of headwinds during the second quarter of 2021, primarily low inventory as a result of the ongoing microchip shortage. Supply for the vehicle remains extremely tight, running at 28 days at beginning of January 2021 and dropping to 16 days as of the end of April.

Even so, the Blazer managed to hold its own by posting a minimal increase in sales volume compared to some of the other models in its segment, gaining 864 units compared to the year-ago quarter. Even so, the dip of two percentage points to three percent isn’t entirely great news.

Going forward, we believe that Chevrolet’s Camaro-inspired midsize crossover will continue to find success, with sales volume keeping steady or growing – but only as long as supply permits and inventory stabilizes.

  1. Who is buying a Toyota Highlander? I never see those around here. The exterior is but ugly and the interior is subpar cheesy, especially compared with the Blazer!

    2. @Dan: When I read your comment, I had to laugh. Who is buying it? The sheep. Toyota buyers/drivers are like sheep who follow one after another. Doesn’t matter how poor the interiors are or how ugly Toyota makes them. The sheep just lay down the money and seldom ever look at another brand. If they did, they certainly wouldn’t sell nearly as many Toyota’s as they do.

      1. Yeah exactly! Kind of like people who buy Apple iphones, there are much better phones out there, but whatever Apple builds, those loyal sheep keeping buying them! I used to in IT Desktop Support for 23 years, constantly had aguments with people who would buy Apple products and kept saying they are the best…of course they couldn’t back up why they were the best, just kept saying they are the best.
