The luxury D-sedan segment saw cumulative sales expand 69 percent to 79,025 units during the second quarter of 2021.

The GM Authority Take

The CT5’s sales performance was disappointing during the second quarter of 2021, especially after the 46 percent increase during the first quarter of 2021. To blame for the disheartening performance is little to no inventory of the vehicle as a result of the ongoing microchip shortage, which has disproportionately impacted the CT5.

To whit, CT5 production at the GM Lansing Grand River plant in Michigan was idled in March. Zero units of the luxury sedan were built in April, only 580 units were built in May, and zero units rolled off the line in June.

We expect Cadillac CT5 sales to start growing in the coming quarters as the chip shortage subsides, returning inventory to more normal levels. Doing so will enable GM to satisfy what’s likely a healthy amount of pent-up demand for the luxury sedan.

Aiding sales volume will be the all-new CT5-V Blackwing. The ultra-high-performance sedan was revealed in February and the first units started being produced in early July.

However, the path forward won’t be easy, as several rivals will soon be completely overhauled, including the 2022 Mercedes-Benz C-Class, which has traditionally presented a strong opponent for the CT5 as well as its (segment-level) predecessor – the ATS range.

  1. I ordered a CT 5V May 27 and now they’re saying October I understand there’s a chip shortage but???

    1. If there’s no chips, there’s no chips. Most (if not all) of car doesn’t work without them. They can’t pull these things out of thin air, you know?

      1. GM is choosing what lines to starve. XT 4 or 5 recieved far more chips as did Chevrolet models like Trailblazer.
This was a smart call given Detroit’s 30 year reputation for sun par sedans however this is no way to build back credibility especially doing a period of hightened demand.

        1. Yes, GM is choosing what is best for it during this time… as any for-profit business would.

I would not characterize ATS, CTS, CT6, and the new CT4 and CT5 as “sub-par”. The same goes for the last two generations of the Buick Regal and LaCrosse, the latest-gen Impala and Malibu, as well as the first- and second-gen Cruze. A lack of inventory does not determine credibility. This won’t even be remembered once 2023/2024 come around.

  2. Shouldn’t CT4 sales figure should be on their instead of the CT5 since that competes with the compact luxury sport sedan while CT5 is a E-class/5er competitor?

But seriously how is that ugly as$ and horrible to drive 4er selling so well? People really are clueless badge wh0re. But then again BMW has tendencies to inflate numbers.

Also how are we even getting clapped by Genesis? Cadillac CT4/CT5 drives better, more reliable, cheaper more value, etc. I cannot think of one reason why rational people would gravitate toward them. Again most likely the clueless badge wh0re because of that ex-BMW Dr. Alberto “Einstein” Beerman or whatever the hell his name is that is propping up that corrupt company.

No, that’s not the correct segmentation. We’ve been over this many times, but the CT5 is NOT an E-segment entry, but instead a D-segment entry. More details here:
      https://gmauthority.com/blog/2021/06/why-the-cadillac-ct5-does-not-replace-the-cts-video/

      Meanwhile, the CT4 is a C-segment entry.

As for being outsold by Genesis, check out The GM Authority Take section. There was no inventory to sell due to chip shortage.

    2. @Dennis Constantinos: I tend to agree with you on most everything you said above. I fully understand the “segment” stuff that Alex is talking about, but I go by actual size, looks, price and features. Personally, I have a 2020 CT4 and a 2021 Volvo S60. The cars are less than one inch apart in overall length and both are extremely similar in all ways. Although I like the S60, I still would choose the CT4 over the S60 if I had to go back down to one car. I also have a co-worker who just got a BMW 3 series and traded in his 2020 Alfa Giulia. I’m more impressed with his new BMW than the Alfa, but I wouldn’t take his BMW over either of my cars and riding in it makes me realize how nice my CT4 is.

    1. I would like your opinions:

Cadillac seems to have become a ‘Premium’ brand save the Escalade. The ‘profit’ philosophy has seemingly caused them to walk a path of profit over product. Which, in my opinion, gets them to try to make the most money, with the least effort possible. Which is not a risk-taking or leadership mindset. Yes, I know the main objective of ANY business. But the true luxury segment is more about the intangibles of the product, not just its primary function. Whether it be a lack of advertising or whatnot, I just don’t see how Cadillac is special.

Consistently changing names doesn’t inspire confidence, there always seems to be issues with interior quality, and they seem to squeeze as much as they can out of the parts bin, when in my mind, luxury is a bespoke and quite personal process.

With so much information available by way of the net, I am wondering if things are really as bad as MOST are reporting, or if there is a general bias against gm/Cadillac? And if so, why? Cadillac has so much brand equity and already being outsold by Genesis?

What does one suggest to fix either the product, or the perception of the brand?

      Reply
      1. I do think there is a general bias against gm/Cadillac. Maybe not obvious or out there but sort of implicit. People, think Europe=luxury, specifically German=luxury. American and Japanese, being non-European automatically gets categorized as second tier. Genesis is outselling because they hire European engineers and designers and puts out on their advertisement about that Dr. Alberto Beerman name (or whatever the ex-BMW guy’s name is) trying to legitimize their brand about being sort of “German-lite”.

      2. When I was younger, Cadillac was a car I always aspired to own. Now that I can afford one, Cadillac does not offer anything I want (with the possible exception of the CT5, but it is too small for my needs). Im not a fan of the Lyriq as well. Where Cadillac (and Lincoln for that matter) went wrong is trying to go head to head with the Europeans. As a result, the hardcore European buyers were not impressed enough to switch, and the traditional American luxury car buyer was alienated. I felt Cadillac was somewhat on the right track with the CT6, but we all see how that turned out.

      3. Cadillac will blame americans love for suvs for their poor sales. That may be a small part of it but they dropped the ball hard on this design and that is the key driver for bad sales. The front is the best view and its just okay. The side view is not great. The back end looks just terrible.

Oh and lets not forget confusing potential buyers with watered down “v” names. Thus is just another missed opportunity on cadillacs part.

The problematic 8speed kept me out of a v3 cts-v and the v6 engine, cue and cheap dash kept out of an ats-v.

The design of these new versions will once again have me shopping elsewhere. Its a shame too because I would like to have another luxury american V8 sedan/coupe (with a great transmission)…before all of the Ev nonsense takes over completely. Oh well.
