The GM Authority Take
The 2,303 Cadillac CT4 sales in the U.S. during the second quarter of 2021 were 324 units shy of the 2,627 deliveries reported in Q1 2021 and 418 units lower than the 2,721 deliveries reported in the fourth quarter of 2020, which represented the best quarterly sales performance for the subcompact luxury sedan since its launch.
The sales volume during Q2 2021 was lower than it would have been due to almost non-existent inventory of the luxury sedan at the retail level as a result of idled production. CT4 production at the GM Lansing Grand River plant in Michigan was idled in March as a result of the ongoing microchip shortage. Production was mostly off during the following five months and didn’t restart until August 9th.
It’s also worth noting that the CT4 had a very rocky launch. The very first units of the luxury sedan began arriving at dealers during the second half of Q1 2020, but the launch was quickly followed by the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic in the United States, which caused a two-month-long shutdown of GM production operations in North America, including the GM Lansing Grand River plant that produces the CT4. As a result, initial shipments quickly sold out, resulting in sub-par inventory going into the second and third quarters of 2020.

Oh C’mon why does people keep buying fail wheel drive understeering torque steering Germans over the CT4? CT4 is rear wheel drive more reliable, more bank for the buck, more fun to drive, easier and cheaper to maintain, better proportion and nicer to look at etc (even if you are comparing to rear drive 3er or C class it still applis). There is no reason for any rational people to buy those essentially gussied up corolla. When Cadillac made the CImmaron people were furious (and for a good reason). But when zee Germans do the same people just look the other way and don’t complain
I think this post is a good example of the typical Cadillac fan, and explains why people will pay for the brand cachet and snobbery of BMW or Mercedes over the “they’re still around?” grandpa image of Cadillac, even if it’s a front wheel drive cheaper quality car.
What you are saying is that people who base their purchase on image rather than better content are making the smart decision. Kind of like saying lemmings are making the smart decision to follow the others over the cliff rather than choosing a better path.
People do keep buying the German stuff, but they couldn’t buy the CT4 during the second quarter even if they wanted to since there was little to no inventory.
I expect the CT4 to take first or second in its segment once inventory returns to normal levels.
Hey Alex, I know it’s a whole different story but what do you think about the ATS? I’m thinking about getting a slightly used ATS Coupe. Does it handle like a premium?
My 13 ATS 3.6 Premium was recalled 8X… I liked it but it was not a quality built car and the dealer experience was pathetic. Folks buy BMW, Audi and Mercedes because there is REAL cache in those marques, people have a concept of what they are supposed to be, GM has wasted billions on Cad and no one even knows what they’re supposed to be. Not to mention the dealer experience and service at Mercedes is exceptional. GM is totally lost and Cad is swirling in the commode…
It is Rear Wheel Drive with available AWD
I think if cadillac had the inventory it would have done much better. CT4 are no where to be found right now. 3rd quarter is going to be worse. I heard from a dealer the manufactures don’t expect the problem to be over until April of 2022.
I think this should show Cadillac that they should put off going all electric. That is a big mistake to get rid of the piston engine that is such a beautiful thing in these vehicles.
The sales performance seen here is a result of close to zero availability. How is that at all related to going all electric, or not?
I think the ct4 will do even better when inventory rises
I sure love mine (now that the noise was fixed). Fantastic car.
I have said two or three time , That these is the class where the Chevy Camaro should be in ,Instead going against the Mustang . The Camaro and Mustang are losing sale to those class of Automobiles ! I will say it again ,rather then stope building the Camaro ,Give a new style with four doors and move to this class against Ct4 ,BMW Mercedes and others !
The back end of the ct 4 is not good looking
I cannot WAIT to see the numbers after a regular year; one that was not tainted with covid and Semiconductor chip shortages.
