The GM Authority Take
The Envision’s 97 percent growth in Q2 2021 follows a 51 percent rise in Q1 2021, a 1 percent increase in Q4 2020, a 44 percent rebound in Q3 2020, a 14 percent decline in Q2 2020, and a 9 percent drop in Q1 2020.
Notably, the Envision was completely overhauled for the 2021 model year, moving to the GM E2 platform shared with the Cadillac XT4.
- See complete details and info on the 2021 Buick Envision.
Meanwhile, the current, first-gen model is being discontinued in North America. In China, the first-gen Envision remains on sale as the Envision, while the all-new, second-gen model is sold as the Envision S.
We posit that the significant increase in Envision deliveries during Q2 2021 was the result of the following three factors:
- Strong interest in the all-new, 2021 Envision
- Run-out of remaining last-generation Envision
- Healthy retail availability of the outgoing, last-gen model and of the all-new model
In fact, the Envision’s Q2 2021 sales performance substantially closed the gap with the two segment sales leaders.
Going forward, we expect the all-new 2021 Buick Envision to perform significantly better in the segment as long as inventory/supply remains stabile. Incidentally, this would imply that the SAIC-GM Jinqiao plant in China that builds the new Envision has a healthy supply of microchips, which is not the case for the GM Fairfax plant in Kansas City, Kansas that builds the Envision’s platform mate, the Cadillac XT4.

Interesting that gm China can get all the microchips they need. The dumbing down of America, race to the bottom picking up speed.
Jofa: And you are getting this info where? How do you conclude that China is getting “all the microchips they need”? You seem to be taking your comment from this in the article: “Going forward, we expect the all-new 2021 Buick Envision to perform significantly better in the segment as long as inventory/supply remains stabile. Incidentally, this would imply that the SAIC-GM Jinqiao plant in China that builds the new Envision has a healthy supply of microchips, which is not the case for the GM Fairfax plant in Kansas City, Kansas that builds the Envision’s platform mate, the Cadillac XT4.”
I don’t read that paragraph that way. I think it’s just poorly written. From my auto related side of this business, China doesn’t seem to have some magical supply of chips.
Dan:
I think you answered your own question. Where do you think the chips are made ? Who do you think owns the manufacturing plants? If the plants aren’t 100% Chinese their at least 50%.
The bigger question is gm using this as a political ploy against the U.A.W.? We all know the XT4 doesn’t sell and Cadillac can’t come up with a decent marketing campaign to save their life. That leaves plenty of capacity at Fairfax for the invasion.
If gm ends up selling 50,000 invasions to numb Americans imagine how many they could sell if it were built in the U.S..
Sorry, but you are just reading into what is not being said. BTW, the biggest chip producer is in Japan. You sound like part of the reason so many have decided to go elsewhere to assemble products.
Dan:
It must suck to have to defend China because you work at a Volvo dealership. Check your google machine for chip producers.
The point is that GMNA is prioritizing chips for full size trucks and SUVs (at the cost of such vehicles as the XT4) while GM China is prioritizing chips for high volume premium and luxury products like Envision.
That’s what the article hints at. But without actual proof (that GM will never confirm), this is the best info there is at the moment.
Jofa: You sound like you are 10. Are you?
Ha ha ha, I saw you were having trouble grasping the issue. Figured I would try to simplify the process for you. I can see there’s still a disconnect. Hey, at least you still have your sense of humor.
Not bad for a Chinese vehicle.
Make them in the USA Mary Barra
I really think this Envision will sell so well. It’s already nipping at the heals of both the NX and RDX. Personally, I think it’s a way nicer vehicle than those two. Just goes to show that if you build something people like and it’s well designed/built, people will buy it. I hope to be reading where the Envision is at the top of this list by the end of this year or end of the 1st Q of next.
“I hope to be reading where the Envision is at the top of this list by the end of this year or end of the 1st Q of next.”
This is the single worst thing I’ve ever read here.
Ci2Eye: Why? That’s a quite vague statement at best.
Ahem……………….I’m waiting Ci2Eye.
i think he is referring to the envision being made in china.
if they become a top seller, that will just encourage gm to build more vehicles in china and export them to the states.
some people have a problem with that. other people like you don’t mind working for the chinese.
GM should bring over more vehicles from China. Starting with: Cadillac CT6; Buick LaCrosse, Regal, Verano & GL8 minivan.
There’s no desire in the American market for full size luxury sedans. Most people would rather buy an S Class for the sake of owning an S class rather then a CT6. The Verano could do well if it was done correct since the ILX still is alive. In regards to the minivan….Mercedes tried it and in the States and it didn’t go well.
Encore GX, Envision and Enclave are all segment leaders. With sedans gone Buick US apears to be a healthy brand desired by premium, if not quite luxe, buyers. Bringing Envision “Plus” would fill another segment white space increasing both line up size and sales.
Maybe Buick has finally broken through and is no longer a damaged brand? I’d like seeing age dem ou s for each vehicle.
Buick=gm’s GEO division of the 2020s. I will never buy a Chinese made car so the Envasion is out. If I wanted to buy a Korean car, I would buy a Hyundai or Kia. All of my vehicles I own, have owned, and will own will be built by one of the traditional Big 3 automakers in the US or Canada.
And who asked you what you would or wouldn’t buy? Clearly there are enough people who think otherwise. Luddite much?
NO (BTW, Ludite is a noun, not a verb). I certainly am not going to spend $40,000+ to support a communist country like China after they unleashed the virus on this country when there are many domestically built alternatives I can buy. Even the Asian and European automakers know it’s good policy and sound business to build where you sell. What’s gm’s problem?
Tigger: Time to take off your tin foil hat and stop listening to conspiracy stuff.
Time for you to educate yourself about what is really going on. No, Im not talking about watching CNN also.
Tigger: Let me ask you this. What difference is it to you if a country is Communist? Do you live there? How does it affect you? You and the most in the conspiratorial community are quite dangerous to democracy. Your talking points are always the same with little to no fact. Your dog whistle tactics are getting old. Oh, and BTW. If anyone failed this country when it comes to Covid, it was the orange moron who permanently stained this country.
Finally, I’m asking you to put your money where your mouth is. I want you to give us a list of every electronic device: Phone, computer, TV, radio, speakers, and on and on. Then I’m asking you to open them up or look at the tag and share with us where each of those was assembled or produced. When done, you will need a wet-wipe for that egg on your face.
Enjoy your rights? Enjoy being able to be up and go wherever you want when you want without being questioned? Enjoy being able to worship tomorrow if you so choose? Enjoy being able to slam on public venue inept politicians? Enjoy being able to go online and searching for anything you would like without censorship? Try doing these thing in China or any other dictatorship.
In a little over a year, Covid- which at worst was manufactured by the Chinese and at best accidentally released to the public without containment- has caused our rights to be restricted, businesses to close, government taking a bigger role in our privacy and every day life. Enjoy the closed stores? Enjoy the mask mandates? Enjoy the massive federal debt that dillutes the value of our savings? Enjoy the curfews? Enjoy young people being robbed of the education that you pay for in taxes?
This virus has caused irrevocable damage to this nation’s health, social structure, and economy. It has stripped us of the freedoms that we enjoyed and even took for granted. And we’re not done yet. The lefties are wanting to attach a scarlet letter to those who opt not to take the jab. China not only imported pain and misery with its virus, it also ushered in a heaping helping of big government telling us when we are allowed to go places, where we are allowed to go, who we can see and for how long. We have experienced in the last year what the people of China live like on a day to day basis.
I challenge you to talk to someone who lived in Russia before the wall fell or someone who lived in Cuba under Castro. Perhaps they will give you a different perspective as to what it is to live under oppression.
BTW I realize mist electronics are made in China. That is because big corporations sent this work from California, Indiana, Pennsylvania to China and we have no American-made options any longer. Besides there is a big difference between a $300 phone or a $10 calculator and a $40k plus vehicle that gm could easily build in the US.
China did not intentionally leak Covid-19. They have lost many citizens, too, and huge chunks of the nation are under lockdown. I’d hate to see your “research” which is probably a mix of Reddit, WND, Gateway Pundit and Hannity. You only hate CNN for reporting the truth regarding the recent presidential election as opposed to conspiracy spin like Tucker does Hungry with Orbin.
Germany, unlike China, intentionally murdered over six million in concentration camps yet everyone loves VW and BMW. (You seem disinterested regarding Chinese camps for Muslims).
As for S Korea they are a top non NATO ally that pays its workers a developed world wage on par with Canada so you shouldn’t object unless this is really a racial them vs us thing.
When in doubt pull out the race card……
Just because one chooses to buy union-made American branded vehicles does not one a racist.
Steve C: Thank you for posting something that actually makes sense.
Tigger: Dude, you REALLY need to take off the tinfoil hat. You put so much above (again, all talking points from the (far) right, so I will only touch on a couple things that matter from your post. First, yes, I live in a democratic country and we do enjoy those things. Kind of makes my point above about why do you care? Do you live there? If not, then please stop. But the more important point I’ll make is that you can go ahead and refuse to listen to science and the doctors. Go ahead and refuse that shot. When you are dead, you won’t have ANY of those “rights” now will you. I’ll take my chances with the doctors, science and professionals by being vaccinated. You have the right to not get it. With your “right” to refuse, you run a much higher chance of dying from this most recent spike than do I. Enjoy.
Lastly Tigger, I think you are failing miserably by not accepting that our last so-called president FAILED in every way when it came to covid. If there was someone at the top (Republican or other) who listened to the experts and acted more quickly while encouraging our nation to follow health protocols, we’d be in a much better place today. But you go ahead and keep listening to Tucker and the far right. See where it takes you. And if/when you become deadly ill and they (Tucker and all) are not because they secretly took the vaccinations, let’s see how they help you then. So it’s time. Remove the tin hat.
I never said I didn’t get the shot. I just think it is a matter of personal choice.
Never wrestle with a pig. You just get dirty and the pig enjoys it.
Not sure what the demographics are, but my wife and I are in our mid-thirties and just purchased a 2021 envision. This thing is awesome. White with the sport touring package and panoramic sunroof. Has everything we want/need and more and a good price point. I could care less that it’s made in China, so is the phone I’m typing on. I’m not going to finally make my stand at the Buick Envision.
Planning on getting the redesigned Enclave in a couple of years as well. Really like what Buick is doing. Was still able to beat up on the MSRP as well unlike other makes currently.
Nice work on the Envision, just shows once again that outside of the Escalade there is nothing worthwhile coming from Cadillac. People are trying to say the XT4 isn’t selling only because if the plant shutdown but if you look at the numbers it’s was never selling before so stopping production isn’t a big loss.
XT4 has always sold mid-pack in its segment. The fact that it hasn’t been produced for the last few months is obviously the reason that sales are in the gutter. Once production spins back up, so will sales.
The 21 Envision is comparable to the Chevy Blazer which is made in Mexico. I like both, but I can’t buy if it’s not built in the USA. Most of the Envisions seem to be dealer demos, might be why the sales numbers are higher than expected. Pricing is competitive when priced in mid 30’s, the XT4 is more bang for the buck at that price point and it’s made in KC.
Dealer demos don’t count toward sales.
There goes your entire argument.
It’s not economically beneficial or logical to build the Envision here when they sell more than 3 times the amount in China. This even proves it since the XT4 is basically a lame duck. Not to mention Fairfax will probably be repurposed in the near future to make EVs since the only cars Fairfax assembles is the XT4 and Malibu, another dead vehicle.
