The 2022 Cadillac Escalade luxury SUV arrives with a few changes and updates over the previous 2021 model year, including the addition of the Buckle To Drive feature.
For those readers who may be unaware, Buckle To Drive is a safety technology that promotes safe seatbelt use. The system expands upon the Teen Driver system, and restricts the driver from shifting out of Park if the driver’s seatbelt is not fastened.
Here’s how it works. When the vehicle is started in Teen Driver mode, the driver will hear an audile alert when the brake pedal is depressed. The system will issue a message in the driver information center telling them to “Buckle seat belt to shift.” Once the driver’s seatbelt is fastened, the system will allow the driver to shift out of park.
The Buckle To Shift system will time out 20 seconds after it is enabled. The system can also be turned off and on in the Settings or Teen Driver menu via the onboard infotainment system.
To note – Teen Driver mode can be enabled by creating a PIN in the settings menu that will register the teen’s specific key fob. As such, the system will only activate when that specific key fob is used to start the vehicle.
In addition to its inclusion with the 2022 Cadillac Escalade, Buckle To Drive is also offered on the Cadillac CT4 and Cadillac CT5.
Further updates for the 2022 Cadillac Escalade include the deletion of Near Field Communication (NFC) phone pairing, as GM Authority covered previously. Included as standard for the 2021 Cadillac Escalade, NFC phone pairing allows for easy data transfer between two compatible devices that are located within close proximity of one another, allowing for quick phone pairing between a smart device and vehicle infotainment system. However, with the streamlined pairing procedure offered by modern devices, the NFC system was deemed no longer necessary.

What 2022 Escalade owner who will spend north of $100k is REALLY going to let their teen driver tool around town in it? I’m a Cadillac owner and I love the extent of tech and R&D that GM has afforded the brand, but this is a bit ridiculous.
