Updated 2022 Buick GL8 Avenir MPV Launches In China

After introducing Vehicle-to-Everything (V2X) technology into the full-size MPV in mid-December, General Motors just launched the 2022 Buick GL8 Avenir in China, the only country in the world where the nameplate is marketed. The third model year of the refreshed GL8 Avenir receives major updates that reinforce its leadership in the Chinese market.

The biggest novelty of the 2022 Buick GL8 Avenir is the incorporation of a next-generation mild hybrid powertrain as standard throughout the model line, increasing output in addition to improving fuel economy by 6 percent compared to the previous engine. It also includes enhancements to its list of premium features, further positioning the luxury MPV as the most advanced model in its class in the Asian country.

“The GL8 Avenir family has been defining the premium MPV segment with strong demand since it was launched,” said Executive Director of Buick Sales and Marketing at SAIC-GM, Molly Peck, in a statement. “The 48V mild hybrid technology is solid proof of Buick’s commitment to electrifying its portfolio for lower emissions. With enhanced styling and technology, the 2022 GL8 Avenir not only provides better fuel efficiency but also a more luxurious and intelligent in-vehicle experience, giving it additional strength for continued momentum,” she added.

Specifically, the mild hybrid powertrain of the 2022 Buick GL8 Avenir consists of an electric motor and a 48-volt electrical system, working in conjunction with the existing turbocharged 2.0L LSY four-cylinder engine and GM nine-speed automatic transmission. However, SAIC-GM hasn’t yet released updated power and torque figures.

In addition, the updated 2022 Buick GL8 Avenir boasts improved comfort and convenience features, such as wider armrests and headrests with refined materials, USB charging ports and extra storage compartments, soundproof glass and third-row reading lights. It also includes Buick’s latest eConnect infotainment system with an all-new user interface.

The 2022 Buick GL8 Avenir just went on sale and is available throughout the Buick dealer network in China, the main volume market for the Tri-Shield brand. The model lineup continues with three distinct versions, including the seven-seat base, six-seat mid-range and four-seat flagship variants. Prices for the new model year increased by 40,000 CNY are as follows:

  • GL8 Avenir (seven seats): 463,900 CNY (about $71,730 USD at the current exchange rate)
  • GL8 Avenir (six seats): 469,900 CNY ($72,660 USD)
  • GL8 Avenir (four-seat flagship): 533,900 CNY ($82,560 USD)

  1. Those seats looks unreal, why didn’t Cadillac escalade get those fancy seats instead got seats from Chevy and put speakers in the head rest. This car has the best seats that gm makes and yet it’s in a $72,000 minivan and not in a $100,000 escalade.

    1. China is more important to lowercase gm. They especially need China as L-gm is not coveted around the world. Take away their good BOF trucks and BOF suvs then they have nothing. A big fall from grace.

American’s are just too fat. They need heavily padded seats so they remain comfortable on long rides.
In China failed communist policies have let millions of people starve to death from time to time. Their lightweight population doesn’t put as much stress on the seats. Allowing Buick to get more creative with fancy stitching.

    3. Well the front seats I don’t think look that special, they have nice stitching but the actual seat doesn’t look any better/worse to me. And the rear seats are only possible cause this thing only has 4 seats. An argument could be made that there should be a 4 seater Escalade option (like Tom Brady’s), but I doubt it would sell that well here (families are a lot bigger in the US so people want more seats). No way those rear seats fit in a 7 seat configuration

  2. A gm minivan priced between $72,000 to $82,000? Keep it in China.

    1. Too bad Buick can never be positioned as a high-end brand in the US now since American consumers have been worshiping Japanese and German cars and don’t consider American brands as premium anymore.

      1. Hmmmmm 🤔 looks like a Chrysler van to me……hard to imagine China copying something from the US?!?!

  3. The U body platform just keeps going and going. You can still see the Montana / Uplander / Terraza / Relay showing through. Just another vehicle segment gm abandoned.

  4. A really great and quality car on a par with a Mercedes. The prices are confident, but when it comes to leasing, a gross price is just a number! The decisive factor is the monthly leasing rate and guarantee over the leasing term. As far as I know, customers rarely buy a car in China. Probably because of the political system in China.

    1. “As far as I know, customers rarely buy a car in China.”……Where did you learn that from Herman?

23.529.400 cars were sold on the Chinese market in 2018. About 60% is paid for in cash, leaving 40% to be financed. Traditional bank loans will fund 93% or 8,7 million cars, leaving the remaining 7% up for what is generically called “Leasing”.

      1. @GlobalCitizen: I think I can answer that? I scanned or read your link! Does not belong in this topic, but as is well known, comments often ignore the topic.
SO! A cash purchase does not say whether the money is also fully taxed privately by the buyer. Who buys goods like a car with private, fully taxed money with a depreciation of 50% in 4 years? Nobody, even if people like to write it like that! You can get money from banks around the world at the cheapest rate, sometimes at -0.2% interest, and then buy a car or truck “supposedly in cash”. We have negative interest rates in the EU. Look on the internet!

It can be different for companies, but the tax office must approve this. As far as I know, only leasing is allowed. Why is the company car paid for by the tax office?

In my private life I buy a 20 year old car for 1200 US dollars safely in cash, as the loss in value is very small and prices are currently rising!

Therefore: privately with fully taxed money, you buy a property (house, garden, garage) that is often worth 50% more in a few years.

  5. A GM mini van that the USA mom’s abandoned many years ago because of the soccer mom stigma. China and the rest of the world football (soccer) is the number one sport. It’s a nice looking van and it just sell in the US if priced right. Those big price numbers for China means that the market they’re going for is willing to pay the price. Not much difference than a Tahoe and the Escalated. Both are priced for the market geared for the buyer.

  6. This would make a lot of sense in the US market, but the pricing would have to be more in line with the Pacifica.
