Ultium Battery Testing Addressed In Latest GMC Hummer EV Teaser: Video

A new advertisement released by General Motors this week touches briefly on the testing process for the Ultium battery packs that will be used to power the upcoming 2022 GMC Hummer EV pickup.

The 30-second advertisement shows a white GMC Hummer EV pickup prototype undergoing rigorous off-road and track testing at the GM Milford Proving Ground in Milford, Michigan. A GM engineer provides the voiceover commentary for the ad, which is as follows:

“At GM, our vehicles are really an important part of our customer’s lives and so testing is critical. The Ultium batteries are exposed to different terrains, climate conditions and road hazards. We want to make sure that all the work that we put in can give our customers confidence on the road.”

As this voiceover plays, clips of the GMC Hummer EV prototype driving through water, ascending a steep grade and racing down a dusty path flash across the screen. Another clip shows GM engineers taking an Ultium battery pack out of a cold freezer – likely part of a testing procedure to ensure the Ultium battery pack works as designed in winter weather conditions.

The GMC Hummer EV First Edition will feature a large Ultium battery capable of giving the 9,000+ lb truck about 350 miles of driving range. The Hummer EV3X and dual-motor EV2X, meanwhile, will have slightly less range at an estimated 300 miles. The entry-level Hummer EV2 will boast an estimated range of around 250 miles. GM has not officially confirmed the size of the battery packs to be used in the GMC Hummer EV, though amateur sleuths have determined the First Edition’s battery is rated at around 200 kWh. The First Edition battery pack also has 24 modules with 24 cells each for a total of 576 pouch cells.

The GMC Hummer EV First Edition will enter production at GM’s Factory Zero plant in Michigan later this year. In the meantime,  check out this new advertisement for the so-called “supertruck” embedded below.
