General Motors has just officially launched the new 2022 Buick Regal GS in China, a year after the April 2020 debut of the redesigned nameplate in the Asian country. The automaker is introducing the second model year of the mid-size sedan’s mid-cycle refresh, which is now exclusive to the Chinese market, with the sporty GS variant first.
The newly launched 2022 Buick Regal GS maintains all the main attributes of the recently refreshed model, including the updated front end that adopts the latest evolution of Buick’s design language and the brand’s most modern powertrain. As a result, the 2022 Regal GS received only a few minor changes, like a more effective braking system and an improved infotainment system.
Styling-wise, the 2022 Buick Regal GS presents a striking appearance, allowing it to distinguish itself from the other trim levels thanks to a specific three-dimensional grille mesh, more aggressively designed bumpers with prominent silver trim, side skirts as well as blacked out wheels and mirror caps. In addition, the red GS badging and red-painted brake calipers further highlight its sporty character.
SAIC-GM said it performed some technical changes to improve the performance and driving dynamics of the 2022 Buick Regal GS, including a slight tweak to the turbocharger to improve throttle response, reducing the 0-to-100 km/h (0-62 mph) sprint to 7.1 seconds. In addition, the brake system now includes more efficient vented discs at the rear, along with red-painted calipers to match the front ones.
Mechanically, the 2022 Buick Regal GS also keeps the same powertrain configuration that was introduced last year. The turbocharged 2.0L LSY four-cylinder engine is the only choice, producing 233 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque, and is matched to the GM nine-speed automatic transmission with Electronic Precision Shift technology.
The 2022 Buick Regal GS is now available throughout the Buick dealership network in China, which for the past few years has been the American brand’s main volume market. The sporty Regal variant is offered in two trim levels, both with a high level of standard features, a suite of advanced driver assistance systems and the latest infotainment system with wireless phone projection. Suggesting pricing is as follows:
- 2022 Regal GS Elite: 218,800 CNY (about $33,810 USD at the current exchange rate)
- 2022 Regal GS Prestige: 249,800 CNY ($38,600 USD)

Oh well, it’s got black wheels, YUK!
I still believe that if the Avista went into production in the US, people would buy it. We can’t cede the sedan/coupe/shooting brake market to Germans and Japanese automakers.
Give Buick a sedan and wagon based on the Camaro’s platform…. They just need to retool the old ATS-V line…or put it on the new CT4/5 platform…. And then actually advertise it! So many didn’t even know the old regal existed when all you see is the commercials with that little smartcarish SUV. Price can’t be Audi level right away, need to gain all the ground lost to even put them in the same sentence as Lexus again. Let’s start with Kia competition.
On this forum, big GM at one point in time had renderings of the Grand National with the TTv6 with 445hp and a detuned GS .
Now, little gm has different ideas …
See picture of the interior!
As you can see, the gear selector lever has also been omitted and replaced by pushbuttons like on the OPEL Mokka II. Looks great. The 2022 Buick Regal GS Sedan could also be imported back to the USA and Canada.
Why do the German OEMs Sedan and Wagon and the USA OEM no longer build? Marketing is the answer because not everyone wants SUV / CUV. Sedan and Wagon are not classic cars!
Also, keep in mind that Buick customers don’t just switch to Cadillac to drive Sedans. Cadillac is located in the premium market with BMW, Mercedes, Porsche and Audi and is therefore 40% more expensive.
And the customer doesn’t care where the vehicle is produced.
See TESLA cars that are also delivered to the USA and Europe in China and receive subsidies as if produced locally.
The world is still global.
Buick was starting to finally get it right with its sedans/wagon and GM just gave up.
I have a loaded 2017 AWD Lacrosse and I get complements on it almost daily. It’s fast (5.8 sec to 60), has great styling and is fun to drive when the sport package is engaged. In normal driving mode it’s a great, quiet, cruiser. I’ve gotten up to 32 mpg on trips.
It’s a shame they gave up on sedans/wagons to only sell SUVs – I will probably never buy GM again! My next car will possibly be a new Genesis
