Both of GM’s full-size truck nameplates – the Silverado and Sierra – experienced growth in overall sales volume. The GMC Sierra led the way with a 40 percent jump to 75,495 units, while the Chevy Silverado followed closely behind with a gain of nearly 35 percent to 164,731 units. As such, GM sold nearly twice as many Silverados as Sierras.

Chevy Silverado

The Chevy Silverado saw a 35 percent jump in overall sales volume to 164,731 units. Sales of the Silverado Heavy Duty and Medium Duty models increased 42 percent and 79 percent, respectively, while Silverado Light Duty (1500) sales grew 31 percent. As GM Authority reported previously, the results place the Silverado in first place in its competitive set, ahead of the Ram pickup and Ford F-Series.

In fact, the performance enabled Silverado segment share to grow from 24 percent to 28 percent.

GMC Sierra

GMC Sierra sales experienced the largest growth amongst full-size GM truck offerings with an increase of 40 percent. The results were good enough to increase the nameplate’s segment share from 11 to 13 percent compared to Q2 2020.

While the Sierra managed to post the second-largest increase in its segment, it remained in fourth place in its competitive set when ranked by sales volume. We attribute the very healthy jump in Sierra sales to better availability and healthy interest in the pickup truck.

Combining Chevy Silverado sales with GMC Sierra sales places GM even further ahead of the pack as the best-selling purveyor of full-size pickups in America, outselling Ram by about 76,000 units and Ford by nearly 82,000 units.

  1. RAM is on track to overtake Chevrolet. RAM wins nearly every award, review, has higher consumer loyalty. It’s also a better looking design when compared against the other Detroit brands.
Chevrolet Silverado doesn’t look bad, is better designed than Ford F-Series, but lacks the swag of Sierra and unusual alkost retro beauty of RAMs RAMs front fascia.
I’d still buy a GM midsize anyday since they are pretty huge and a lot cheaper.
