Fleet managers will now be able to use OnStar Vehicle Insights on their non-General Motors vehicles through a new adapter, the automaker announced this week.
With OnStar Vehicle Insights, fleet managers and drivers can access a variety of OnStar services including Vehicle Locator and Remote Commands. OnStar Vehicle Insights also gives fleet managers access to on-the-fly information including Vehicle Health (oil life, fuel efficiency etc.), Driver Behavior metrics and Daily Trip Summaries.
Going forward, fleet managers will be able to receive OnStar Vehicle Insights on their non-GM vehicles through a specially developed OBD-II adapter. Once the adapter is plugged in, the user can begin to receive OnStar Vehicle Insights through the OnStar mobile app, website or dedicated OnStar fleet management platform. This adapter also works with model year 2014 or older GM vehicles that were not shipped with OnStar equipment from the factory.
“Our goal is to help make fleet management as easy and efficient as possible for our current and future customers,” Ed Peper, U.S. vice president of GM Fleet, said of the new OBD-II adapter. “We know many customers have mixed fleets, and we believe there is significant benefit in streamlining the process and monitoring a whole fleet using our singular platform.”
The automaker also announced the launch of the new In-Vehicle Coaching service through the OnStar Vehicle Insights platform today. This is described as a “virtual coaching feature created to help fleet managers keep their drivers safe,” by providing them with real-time verbal cues related to their acceleration, speeding and braking. OnStar data indicates the virtual coaching feature helped drivers decrease hard braking events by 26 percent, hard acceleration by 76 percent and speeding over 80 miles per hour by 93 percent.
OnStar Vehicle Insights, including the aforementioned Fleet Adapter plug-in and In-Vehicle Coaching service, is available to fleet customers in the United States and Canada only for now.
