  1. It’s incredible how GM isn’t able to sell a Chevrolet outside the North America. Sometimes I wonder if Chevy wouldn’t be better administered by VW.

    1. I would expand that to the Americas, to contain North America and South America.

Prior to COVID and the associated disruptions presented by it, Chevrolet constantly had two models that were in the top 10 best-sellers in all South American markets and in South America cumulatively. I have a feeling Chevy will once again regain that position once the impacts of COVID die down in the near to medium term future.

Outside of that, Chevy was also strong in Russia before GM decided to follow bad advice from then-Opel chief K.T. Neumann and withdraw the Bow Tie from the country, essentially giving its share to Kia and Hyundai (and some Chinese makes). But yes, Chevrolet’s global footprint and volume needs to be expanded to more than just the Americas. Europe is ripe for a reentry, as is Australia (slowly but surely), Southeast Asia and Africa.

      1. LATAM buys Chevrolet and it’s popular in the US/Canada. GM China’s mainstream focus is Buick placing Chevrolet in an ackward position. It should be sold in a manner similar to Hyundai/Kia but GM has yet to master this strategy.
Chevrolet China is trapped between Buick and Baojun which isn’t a large market segment. Maybe Chevrolet should leave China, Buick the US, and The General just rebadge for each market. Buick quality at Chevrolet would boost Chevrolet sales.

  2. Auto body design, attached trim and front grill design sell cars. Particularly if favored by particular ethnic groups. Not to appear woke or racist, but let the facts speak for themselves.

The Chinese love the famous toothy front grill that has been with Buicks in various forms since post WW 2. This has created extreme success for gm in China. Various ethnic groups favor various designs to their liking. Examples:

Arabs loved the design of the full sized Chevrolet Impalas from the late sixties through the seventies into the eighties.

African Americans loved the full sized Cadillacs and Buicks ( remember the duce and a quarter ) from the sixties into the seventies.

Mexicans love the VW Beatles. Also extremely popular with Mexicans are the full sized Chevrolet Impalas from 1958 to the mid seventies for customization into both lowered and elevated vehicles.

Further ethnic group preferences include the full sized Chrysler Imperials to the Jewish community.

The Escalade is extremely popular with urban African Americans and urban Latinos.

If you can key your design to the acceptance of a particular ethnic groups liking, this is a key to success. Sometimes the popularity by a specific ethnic group is by unintended default as the Buick product is with the Chinese and the Chevrolet products were with the Arabs back in the day. This is called ” locking out “.

    1. A lot of the ethnic preferences you mention comes down to need, luck and then brand loyalty. To this day Hasidics drive large families in Chrysler Pacifica.
Chrysler 300 became a popular urban bar due to its embrace by Hip Hop artists who took note of its Bentley like ethos at a bargain price. (Unfortunately, alienated some suburban shoppers).
Mexicans loved VW Bugs due to low price in a developing economy and with this came loyalty. Hungary loves Opel due to an excellent dealer network that beats VW.
Every culture values certain design but a lot of what we see is loyalty, trust, and price. This may needy be summed up by Buick being the Emperor’s car and it was also used by early communist party leaders.

      1. Thanks Steve,

Most interesting. You are spot on in your assessment. Thanks for sharing.

Market profiling and targeting to specific groups are the automakers road to success. Ioccoca, DeLorean, Lutz, Earl, etc. had the code.

Fondly remember during the days of network television hour long feature shows such as the FBI with Efram Zimbalist, Jr. where Ford Motor Co. complimentary provided their vehicles to the show’s producers and J. Edgar Hoover ordered black Ford sedans for agents. Law enforcement nationally then started favoring Ford products.

My Three Sons with Fred McMurray was a very successful Chevrolet promotion. Chevrolet then became huge with families.

These promotions were big winners for the automakers back in the day.

As another example, the Volkswagen bus became huge with the counterculture of the late sixties through the mid seventies. VW buses from that era and prior are highly sought after. Particularly the vintage multi roof window models. Woodstock nostalgia. Rock on….1967 summer of love. We are all suckers for nostalgia.

The BMW 2002 became extremely popular with the young highly educated university and yuppie set in the late sixties and seventies. Also now highly sought after.

Lots of fun examples to cite. Get your confederate flag mounted on a mast in the rear of your full sized American pickup. LOL. Southern badass culture.

The badass vehicle style is now in vogue with the tattoo, beard, ballcap and hoodie set trending full sized pickups. Urban full sized pickups with high end rims. The vendors displaying at the SEMA show are loving it.

  4. Communist China and XiZingFat or whatever his name, are no friends of America and, in fact,
are approaching enemyhood if they attack Tawain and continue to support Iran and North Korea’s neuclear ambitions.
I hope GM, oh, sorry, gm, have an exit plan for when the worm turns, or will they expect the US Taxpayer to, once again, bail them out?

  5. The Chinese are holding a huge quantity of US Treasury bills. These bills are backed by American Public lands security and the natural resource values contained within them – wood, minerals – oil, gas, coal, etc. The debt holders don’t want resource extraction to protect the value of their secured interests. Hence one of the reasons for high Canadian lumber prices, the war on coal. and oil and gas drilling restrictions on public lands, along with the forever process to secure mining permits and mining approval on public lands. Include designed high gasoline and diesel fuel prices to curb consumption and move the masses into EVs. This is all part of the closed door secret meetings on the new long term national master plan developed in Washington, D.C.

If we don’t get our act together on our national debt America will be foreclosed. Large portions of western USA public lands will be owned by the Chinese.
