Competitive Sales Comparison (USA)
During the second quarter of 2021, Chevy Silverado sales placed first in its competitive set, outselling the Ram Pickup in second (though by only 499 units) as well as the Ford F-Series (see Ford F-series sales) in third (by 6,496 units).
Previously, the Silverado overtook the Ram in Q1 2020 to reclaim its typical spot as the second best-selling vehicle in its segment. However, this trend shifted for the remaining three quarters of the 2020 calendar year as well as for the first quarter of 2021. The increase in Silverado sales in Q2 2021 enabled the nameplate to overtake its two biggest rivals from Stellantis/Ram and the Ford Motor Company.
There were two models that saw sales volume decrease in Q2 2021: Ford F-Series sales fell nearly 13 percent while Toyota Tundra sales declined over 9 percent. All other full-size trucks reported an increase in year-over-year sales volumes during the second quarter of 2021, with the Nissan Titan (of all things!) reporting the largest gain of nearly 60 percent.

The GM Authority Take
It’s welcome news to not only see Chevy Silverado sales grow, but also to take first place during Q2 2021. We believe that the shift in segment sales ranks comes as a result of the following factors:
- GM’s ability to successfully navigate through the highly-challenging supply chain processes of diverting micro chip supply to most important products like the Silverado.
- Lackluster performance by the F-150 due to a sharp decrease in inventory caused by the microchip shortage. The shortage has affected Ford more than any other North American automaker, with Ford stashing incomplete units of the F-150 all over, including at its own test track.
- Continued liquidation of Silverado Medium Duty inventory.
That said, both Chevy Silverado and GMC Sierra full-size pickups faced supply issues of their own, running on a tight sub-20 day supply throughout the month of May as lingering effects from the COVID-19 pandemic, while the semiconductor chip shortage continued to take a sizable chunk out of General Motors’ production output. If The General can manage to meet demand, there’s a strong chance that the Silverado can maintain its current standing as America’s best-selling pickup truck.
Looking ahead, a heavy refresh of the Silverado 1500 is on the way for the 2022 model year. The 2022 Silverado will feature new front and rear ends, new wheel designs, and a few new exterior colors. Critically, the refresh will also introduce completely overhauled interior, with a new dash, center stack, center console, fully digital gauge option, and the deletion of the column shifter. Additionally, the range-topping High Country model is expected to offer GM’s Super Cruise semi-autonomous driver assist system, and the Trail Boss model will gain an even more capable variant in the form of the Silverado ZR2.
The 2022 Silverado 1500 refresh will launch a bit later into the 2022 model year as a result of delays and challenges presented by the COVID-19 pandemic. The 2021 model year Silverado 1500 will therefore carry over into the 2022 model year for the first few months of production, where it will be known as the 2022 Silverado Limited.

Chevy Silverado 1500 To Get High Diesel Engine Production Mix
As consumer demand for the powerplant remains high.
Brooklyn Man Steals Tow Truck Towing His Silverado, Damages Several Parked Cars: Video
The driver eventually collides head-on with a city bus.
Analyze this how you want but both Ford and Ram are making fewer trucks to deal with the chip shortage. Meanwhile GM is blatantly making vehicles missing key features and only offering a .1% discount to make up for it.
Didn’t you just “analyze it how YOU wanted”?
First is first. Keep making excuses for Ram sheep and Found on Road Dead.
What’s wrong with building them with out some features. Many people who buy trucks don’t need or want all the features that are pushed on them. My brother and Sister in law just bought a LT with the z71 package. That’s all they wanted and the backup camera that is standard by law. They don’t need or want the other gadgets or vehicle stuff. Seems Mary and company are smarter than you or others who want her to go. She is doing her job and making sure the company stays profitable, which is the main goal.
Yeah there are SOOOO many people missing that auto start/stop feature. Give me a truck with that or don’t give me a truck at all!
Idiot.
Needs Balls Not Lipstick
Who needs brakes anyway. If you really need to stop, just find the nearest Prius and slam in to that.
It’s all in the chip availability folks. Automakers with chips are in Fat City. Those that are scrambling have lost ground during the sales reporting periods.
Too bad that most of the chips are produced offshore. Sad when America invented the chip and it’s manufacturing machinery.
What’s the % that return with lifter failure.
0.0003% It is an extremely low failure rate…
Even with that cheap, crappy interior, I predicted this phenomenon!
No surprises here, the Silverado is the best damn worktruck on the planet.
Ford talks a good game, but their Aluminum Prima-Donna is too easily bruised in a work environment. Sad but Ford’s truck is now better suited for yuppies on their Costco runs.
Ram is a decent truck, but it just spends too many days on injured reserve. Also Chrysler dealership aren’t structured for work trucks. When something goes wrong with the truck we need to bring it in NOW, and we need it back an hour ago.
Tundra can’t haul like an American truck. Can’t tow like an American truck, but if you park it in your driveway for a few years. Keeping it clean of any tree sap or anything else that may ruin the finish. You may get a good chunk of your money back when you resell it.
GMC Sierra. I’ve always gotten great service at my dealership, but sorry work overalls and soft leather just don’t mix. This is more of a truck for people who got something the size of a house to tow across country.
Titan & Ridgeline
I’ve never actually seen either one of these trucks on a job sight. Like Ghosts, Aliens and American Soccer fans, I don’t believe they actually exist.
Chevy should be very optimistic about the possible impact of the refreshed ’22 Silverado.
Once the chip situation returns to normal the sales chart will also. Regardless of how it happened it’s refreshing seeing Chevy in the top spot, even nicer seeing Ford in 3rd!
YTD, Chevy still 3rd! One quarter is relatively meaningless with the chip situation!
I would imagine some Ford buyers are possibly putting off a new purchase until the new Electric F150 comes out?
Well almost 100k more trucks sold from previous year. I’d say this is a big win for GM considering you got gmc sales there as well. Chip shortage or not. It’s a blow to ford. Maybe consumers feel the ford don’t look different enough and is suffering from camaro 6tth gen syndrome
I love all the hard plastics that groan and creek and the cheap feeling nobs in gm trucks, it’s so manly!
