Competitive Sales Comparison (USA)
Chevy Spark sales performance during the second quarter of 2021 enabled the city car to continue as the best-selling model in its segment, outselling the Mitsubishi Mirage and Fiat 500, the latter of which has been discontinued in the U.S. market after the 2019 model year.

As a result of its dominant sales performance, the Spark also dominated the segment share, accounting for 53 percent of the sales volume, down 4 percentage points on an annual basis. Meanwhile, the Mirage held a 47 percent share, up 6 percentage points from the year-ago quarter.
The mainstream city car segment expanded almost 56 percent to 14,552 units during Q2 2021, meaning Spark sales slightly underperformed the segment average during the quarter.
The GM Authority Take
The continued growth in Chevy Spark sales during Q2 2021 follows the trajectory experienced during Q1 2021, when Spark deliveries grew 23 percent. That said, the fact that the Mirage managed to post a higher growth rate is surprising and appears to be an anomaly brought about by the ongoing COVID-related vehicle shortage.
Nevertheless, we maintain our expectation of the Spark continuing to carry forward its momentum into the rest of the 2021 calendar year so long as production and supply allow.

Upcoming Chevy Spark EUV To Join Brand’s Lineup In Brazil
Here’s The All-New Chevy Spark EUV Before You’re Supposed To See It
Comments
Just based upon dealer network, Mitsubishi has no business selling at numbers close to Spark sales numbers.
“That said, the fact that the Mirage managed to post a higher growth rate is surprising and appears to be an anomaly brought about by the ongoing COVID-related vehicle shortage.”
This says it all. People are so interested in purchasing a vehicle right away that they are willing to settle. There’s a part of me that wants to do the same thing, but AWD and interior space are too important for my needs.
Richard P: you are 100% correct. We need it now. Must have it now!! haha.
So here’s what hits me. The Spark (which I like a lot) is considered a success when it sells this many units with only one competitor. Yet they feel the Malibu is not worthy to keep when it sells in much higher numbers while competing with a lot of vehicles. Guess my real point is that I feel the Spark is being a success with zero help from GM while they will most likely drop the Malibu because it’s “not doing well” even though I don’t EVER recall a commercial for one (or the Spark either).
The thing is, you can get an Equinox or Blazer and it does the same thing as the Malibu, but you get more interior space, awd, and slightly higher ride height to go over crap in the road. These fwd vehicles are primarily for American highways, so why not get the one with the most value. The only vehicles that need to be cars at this point are the CT4, CT5, Camaro, and Corvette. I do think they should have kept the CT6 as well. Remember, FWD is all about bargain to begin with.
Josh: I’m certainly not for nor against SUV’s or sedans. I’ve owned both, like both and really don’t have a total preference either way. The main thing about the CUV/SUV’s is sitting up higher. Other than that, I would choose a sedan for all else.
I say what I say because I truly feel it’s wrong for GM (yes, everyone is doing it, but this is a GM site) to abandon cars/sedans almost 100%. If nothing else, just for the sake of having something to sell when the tide turns, and it will turn at some point. What I think is the smart money now would be to start moving back to a sedan type vehicle that sits up about 2 or 3 inches higher than the current sedans do.
“What I think is the smart money now would be to start moving back to a sedan type vehicle that sits up about 2 or 3 inches higher than the current sedans do.”
Tesla has done exactly that with the Model Y SUV, which looks like a carbon copy of the Model 3 sedan. When you see one of them by itself it’s hard to determine which of the two you are looking at.
Interestingly, Elon Musk sees the trend – he recently said the Model Y is well on its way becoming the sales leader among his offerings. However I do not seeing him dropping the 3 out of the group because it is needed to complete ‘S 3 X Y’ (3 being a backwards E). He does have a unique sense of humor and it’s a part of how he does business.
A problem with the continuation of sedan production is that buyers are moving away from them and salespeople aren’t going to get in their way. Unfortunately the only Malibu happens to be a sedan which lacks the convenience and all-around utility of a similarly-sized SUV. SUVs overlap what sedans offer and go beyond them.
So why go with the Spark? It fills the gap in size and price at the bottom end of the market. It brings in younger buyers who will be returning to the market several times forward, becoming prospective clients for one of the many other Chevrolet models that would meet their changing needs and desires.
Josh, some of us Chevy Malibu and Cruze owners have our vehicles because they aren’t bigger or higher up. My Malibu can fit a ridiculous amount of stuff and is easily hidden all the time. I love feeling grounded, and don’t have a need for extra space. Everything large is often shipped free or it will all go in the moving truck.
Looking to the future, I don’t see myself replacing my Malibu with a current one or current Chevy, unless they come out with a competitive new gen with new interior, faster engine, and deletion of CVT.
I’m not opposed to lowercase gm going the electric route, but don’t just jump ship on something that WAS selling decent in the segment. Crossovers and trucks aren’t going to take all of us!
Im just wondering if the Spark will become or be replaced by a crossover or will they just phase it out completely. You know the day is coming…
October of 2022 bye bye.
The Spark already is a crossover. See Spark Activ.
My guess is Honda will supply GM next-gen Malibu and or Cruze size sedans if future demand called for it, they will based on the Civic or Accord platforms if they are not the same one.
We probably see a mix of updated current platforms and platforms too far developed to cancel in the US. (remember, Spark sells well overseas and GM still sells plenty of sedans in those markets). The money is tied up into trucks and getting prepared for getting 20 years atleast out the Ultiman platform.
What platform are you talking about that is too far developed to cancel?
I like the spark. I own a spark EV 400ft pounds in that little car with sport mode on and traction control off is fun. I see in the comments people talking about the Malibu. I build those. I’ve been laid off since the 1st week of February. The Malibu is a nice car I’d buy 1 for all my road trips. I’ve been saying for years the Malibu should’ve already been electric, the Malibu did come in a hybrid version that got 40 plus miles to the gallon. I’ve been building the car for 21 years and I didn’t know we had a hybrid version until I walk through the plant 1 day and seem them installing a battery rack in the trunk, shortly afterwards GM announced it was discontinuing the hybrid Malibu that nobody knew existed because GM has a serious commercial advertising problem, when a car is competing agaisnt the camry it needs all the help it can get, GM didn’t advertise the avalanche truck properly, to this day I’ll pull up take the midgate out to fit furniture or sheets of drywall and I always get the same surprised statement!!! I didn’t know these trucks did that,.of course you don’t GM never highlighted it in any commercials, what about the camaro!? Dodge makes commercials doing burnouts and donuts with the hemi cars which gets people exciting about the product, they actually sit and watch the commercial and want the vehicle, when was the last time you seen an exciting camaro commercial? I’ll probably end up building trucks in Texas or vettes in Kentucky
Yeap, me too, retired right at the time(March 2020)the Fairfax plant shut down. If I am still employ, I probably choose the Spring Hill to move to. Good luck to you brother and the Fairfax plant.
Isn’t Spark discontinued by Chevrolet.
Then how does sale increase. Is it sale out to dealer stock and clearance..
It is not discontinued.
