Competitive Sales Comparison (USA)
Chevy Colorado sales during Q2 2021 land the vehicle in fifth place in its competitive set, behind the Toyota Tacoma in first (by 58,071 units), the Ford Ranger in second (by 19,429 units), the Jeep Gladiator in third (by 15,186 units), and Nissan Frontier in fourth (by 836 units). The fifth place finish is unfortunate news as the midsize Chevy truck typically maintains second place (like during Q4 2020) or third place (such as during Q2 2020, Q3 2020, and Q1 2021) in its segment. Also worth noting is that the Colorado is the only model in its segment to post a decline in sales volume.
As Colorado sales fell 26 percent, Toyota Tacoma sales shot up an impressive 43 percent to 72,847 units while those of the Ford Ranger grew 37 percent to 34,205 units (see running Ford Ranger sales). The Jeep Gladiator saw sales increase by over 53 percent, while the Nissan Frontier reported the largest jump with 78 percent. Last place went to the Colorado’s corporate cousin – the GMC Canyon (see GMC Canyon sales), which saw sales grow 3 percent.

The GM Authority Take
The Chevy Colorado spent the second and third quarters of 2020 in third place in its segment before retaking its usual second-place spot during the fourth quarter. However, the first quarter of 2021 sales saw the Bow Tie brand’s midsize truck slip to third place. That slide continued into the second quarter, placing the midsize truck in fifth place in its segment when ranked by sales volume.
The decrease in sales this quarter was most definitely the result of the ongoing microchip shortage, with thousands of Colorados being kept at the GM Wentzville plant awaiting chips.
Another factor of the other factors working against the Colorado is its age: the current model was introduced for the 2015 model year and has remained largely the same, save for a few relatively minor updates. Additionally, widely-reported issues and lawsuits surrounding the Colorado’s 8-speed automatic transmission could be deterring some shoppers from purchasing the truck.
Chevy is minimizing some of the product-related concerns by way of a small update furnished for the 2021 Colorado model. As we reported previously, GM will forego a midcycle enhancement for the Colorado and will instead completely overhaul (redesign and re-engineer) the truck for the 2023 model year (see more on the 2023 Chevrolet Colorado).
Going forward, we expect Chevy Colorado sales to continue at roughly current levels until the all-new, 2023 model is introduced.

There aren’t any on the dealer lots right now. Good luck trying to find any. You can’t sell any if you don’t have any.
Normally I’d agree but looking at the chart it shows 2020 Q 2 results and it still lagged behind both the Tacoma and Ranger. Both which provide modern updates and better interiors unlike the Walmart great value looks the GM twins give off
It beat the Ranger. You have to add the GMC and Chevy models.
I don’t know why the front bumper reminds me of the Camaro it’s time for a major face lift Jeep is out selling it as is Nissan
Silly there are not any on dealers lot. Period the dealership around the corner was close to 100 colorados I do not see any on there lot!
It not like the vehicle is not in demand. There are not any on the lot people can’t even test drive.
You Can’t sell what you don’t have
Where is C8R guy defending this turd while the Tacoma continuously smashes sales with better technology unlike what he calls antiquated compared against the Colorado/Canyon????
Hey needs balls and less lipstick what Toyota tech? Do you mean rear drum brakes?
You are such an idiot troll. Even Toyota owners while happy with their trucks
lament the lack of power and tech in their trucks.
I was just at a Chevy dealer and GMC dealer last night and neither has any Canyons and Colorados. Don’t believe it look up the inventory on the web.
The plant for a while now was stock piling the trucks while waiting for modules. Just 5nis week trucks are taking them back to the plant to be completed and shipped.
As for the new truck stop bellyaching. You have seen the miles and it is clear 22 will be a short year with the change over to the 23 is coming in the spring to the new truck.
Complaining about delayed trucks, and wanting GM to build better class leading trucks is seen as bad? Okay guy what ever, I love GM and want the best for them. I’m sick of GM lacking in the truck department, if you can’t agree on making/wanting GM to be the absolute best in their class you got issues. Colorado / canyon need interior facelifts, Silverado/Sierra’s need massive updates. Give me a reason to buy a Current Denali over the Ram Limited or F150 Platinum right now and you would have bumper steps as the only reason. I’m
Not anti GM I’m pro GM and want them to annihilate the competition rather than staying just above the water
@GM blah, blah, blah: You don’t seem to understand the basic premise that more sales doesn’t mean better vehicles. Toyota is the poster child of this. They sell a ton of vehicles, but have some of the worst vehicles on the market. Cheap, plastics that are terrible, short cuts where the sheep buying them can’t see, outdated platforms. Toyota is a company with little to no ethics. Even if I liked Toyota before, after learning that they gave the most funds to GOP politicians that supported the fight to overturn our election would cause me to never step foot in a Toyota store again.
And if you want to talk about “smashes sales”, lets talk Silverado vs Tundra. Enough said.
The GM midsize twins are the best vehicles in this segment. GMA’s take on “age” of the two is totally wrong. It’s younger than the taco and the European ranger the ranger is based off. GMs problem is the lack of nostalgia. It’s fighting Toyota zombies and prior ranger owners who were clamoring and rejoicing it’s return… Even as the inferior product.
I’ve driven everything on the list except the Jeep (all rentals – I travel a lot). The GM twins are the best, hands down. The Toyota was my worst experience – and I had to drive that turd for a week. It was so underpowered that it had to downshift to maintain speed on highway overpasses – yet returned lower mpg’s than my 6.2 4×4 Sierra. With that said, the lack of updates to the GM twins has them appearing outdated to their market – while Toyota has kept pushing back the expiration date on their old truck with gimmick updates. I’ll seriously consider the 2023 Canyon if they borrow a few more tech features from the Sierra.
As an owner of a 2020 ZR2…..I think I can chime in here…..TERRIBLE INTERIOR! Interior dates back to the 2015 Colorado with ZERO changes! It’s a sea of black depressing plastic….GM interior design staff should be FIRED! Door pockets that won’t hold a thing….a shifter that jabs you in the leg….now on the Colorado forums people are taking Chevy Blazer shifters and swapping them out…..I’m planning on doing the same! The interior could be vitalized by making black/grey….Black/tan….Black/red colors instead of everything is BLACK! We don’t care! I’d rather have a 360 degree vision system on my ZR2 than the expensive shocks! I bought it because I wanted the locking differentials….have some regrets….don’t really need the fake hood bump either….rather have a more powerful motor. I’ve contemplated dyeing some of my interior panels…they are that depressing to me. Seems like GM is just cruising along while Ford is innovating and developing new models….Kind of wish I’d ordered a Bronco instead….It’s a shame!
The DSSV shocks are literally half the reason you should buy a ZR2. Also, you don’t want a crazy expensive interior on an off road vehicle as mud is extremely hard to get off. I love my ZR2 and have very few complaints.
Thank you, at least you realize the interior of the truck is beyond lacking compared to the competition
Eric B: Sounds like you purchased the ZR2 for all the wrong reasons. I was with you until you said ” We don’t care! I’d rather have a 360 degree vision system on my ZR2 than the expensive shocks! ”
You don’t need a ZR2. You need a Ford Excape Titanium.
Yeah, you lost the ability to speak for others when you mentioned 360 camera versus shocks. You bought it for the locking diffs so that must mean you off road in the harshest environments rights? Yet you want a fancy interior to get dirty? Come on man. Be honest, you bought it because even though you have no use for the front and rear lockers (most but a small decimal percent will ever have an actual use for a front locker) you love to mention that at your kids soccer games and the local starbucks. Please tell me you aren’t the guy that said he needed to use the front locker in the snow storm at on the roads in Texas…
Either way, you need to go buy a nice CUV that fits your needs, not a ZR2. Stop buying in to the image purchases and then just complaining, buy what fits your uses. A Blazer High Country seems right down your alley with what you described…
GM brought this market segment back to Detroit them left the product out there to rot without any updates.
GM has not let it rot.
The Toyota is still much older as is the Ford. Just because you never saw one it was sold years before overseas and came here with few changes.
No one cares about Nissan and the Jeep is in a higher price class and suffered the fate or blessing of being a Jeep and the issues that come with it.
The new truck is coming. It will address the needs of 90% as 10% are just delusional and will never be happy.
We need to all understand this segment is an expensive one to fill as even Toyota’s numbers are small scale vs the full size segment. Also this is not like a CUV that is built on a platform that has parts shared with 5 other models.
In fast the lead Ford manger on the Ranger stated it is nearly as expensive to build these trucks as a full size and the return is much lower.
So to pay for the changes the money goes first to the high profit models and then they pay for more expensive lower return profit models like this.
To be honest we are just lucky they gave these another try as most companies had killed them once before to just not done much to them like Toyota or Nissan that have been building 15 year old platforms.
Outsold even by the antique Frontier.
Seems like other manufacturers don’t have problems with access to chips. They’re selling trucks.
Catch Me I’m Falling is their new song.
I owned a 2018 ZR2. There were many things I liked a few and a few I did not. It was by far the most off road capable trucks that I have owned. I traded it in last year and when the new trucks come out I will likely buy another. The interior does have a lot of useless pockets, ergonomics are not great. I knew the truck had come from overseas and I was well aware of some of the issues that came with it. It was a business truck that I used to run around in and bid excavation projects. It was much cheaper to run around in than a 3500 Duramax which are what the rest of my trucks are. The 8 speed kinda sucked, even after the fluid changes, and I was not a real fan of the 3.6. All that said it looked good, it was great running down logging roads and difficult job sites.
I am somewhat surprised at how quick this truck is dropping in sales, and the lack of availability is largely to blame, but not exclusively. GM has run this horse for too long, it was never designed from the ground up for the North American market much like the Ford Ranger. Given that when it was brought here, no one knew if there was a midsized market to be had from a pickup that didn’t say Toyota. Once they knew they had a winner, they should have been immediately working on a North American version. Waiting until 2023, had run the wheels right off the truck. While the Ranger is dated as well, it doesn’t look dated. The Gladiator is all new and different. Toyota has had zero incentive to update the Taco. They offer a very dated pickup and yet it dominates the segment.
GM can take easily be back in second place with hitting a home run on the next gen pickup. I honestly don’t think that Toyota will ever give up their dominance of the segment. They are going to get their sales, but there is plenty of room in this market for other OEM’s to sell a lot of vehicles as well. GM has had plenty of time designing the next gen pickup.. There is no excuse if this pickup doesn’t completely dominate.
