Competitive Sales Comparison (USA)
Not only does the 58 percent decrease in U.S. Chevy Camaro sales during the second quarter of 2021 keep the muscle car in third place in its segment by sales volume, it does so by a substantial margin. In fact, Camaro sales trailed the Dodge Challenger and Ford Mustang roughly 5x.
Challenger sales grew over 52 percent moving into first place in the segment while Mustang sales dropped nearly 7 percent. However, Camaro sales fell at a much faster rate than those of Mustang during the quarter.

The two-door muscle car segment expanded less than 1 percent to 32,520 units, meaning Camaro sales significantly underperformed the segment average.

The GM Authority Take
While similarly-lackluster Q2 2020 results could have been attributed to the negative impact of the COVID-19 pandemic a year ago, third-quarter 2020 performance made it clear that Chevy’s pony car is simply being outmuscled (pun intended) by the Challenger and Mustang. The pattern continued during the Q4 2020, Q1 2021, and now Q2 2021, and is being exacerbated by very low inventory / dealer supply as a result of the ongoing microchip shortage, which has impacted the GM Lansing Grand River plant where the Camaro is made. The poor performance could make it tough for GM to continue making a business case for the vehicle, though there have been hints that The General could extend the sunset date of the sixth-gen Camaro thru 2026.
Besides inventory and supply issues, the decline in Camaro sales can also be attributed to several factors, starting with higher prices of the sixth-generation model, which pushed many price-conscious buyers to more affordable offerings from Ford and Dodge. The 2019 Camaro refresh aimed to address this competitive disadvantage via a revised trim level structure that covers a broader price spectrum. Notably, the 2019 Camaro became as much as $2,000 less expensive than the 2018 model, specifically on the mid-level LT models.
For the 2020 model year, Chevrolet made the Camaro even more affordable by introducing the all-new Camaro LT1 trim level. The V8-powered LT1 is powered by the same 6.2L V8 LT1 engine as the Camaro SS, but slots between the V6-powered LT models (1LT/2LT/3LT) and the V8-powered SS. This makes the Camaro more competitively priced than base V8-powered Challenger and Mustang models. However, even these price-related changes haven’t seemed to help the Camaro claw its way back to the top of the sales charts, a positioned enjoyed by the fifth-gen model.
Other factors that could be contributing to the Camaro not being more popular includes less-than-optimal cabin visibility, a lackluster dash and instrument panel design, sub-par interior material quality, as well as little differentiation of the sixth-gen model from its fifth-gen predecessor in terms of “first glance” exterior styling. Chevrolet attempted to address the “little differentiation” issue with revised front and rear fascias on the 2019 Camaro. Alas, the 2019 Camaro facelift wasn’t particularly well-received for SS models, prompting Chevrolet to deliver a second facelift for the 2020 Camaro SS (and newer). It’s also worth noting that Chevy doesn’t seem to be advertising the Camaro as much as key rivals, including Dodge.
Going forward, we imagine Camaro sales improving slightly on better availability. However, we don’t see the vehicle selling even close to the Challenger and Mustang, unless Chevrolet substantially changes its strategy on the Camaro, which could include offering significant incentives on the vehicle, advertising it more prominently, or both.

Groundhog Day on this site.
Dead car rolling. The Camaro sold well when it actually looked like a Camaro. GM killed it when they redesigned the front end trying to force their overall brand styling onto this vehicle. Plus the fact driving one feels like you are piloting a tank with slits for windows. I think its time they look back into their history books and try resurrecting a different Camaro design.
They need to remodel the car focusing on the 70 spilt bumper frontend, carry over the 2021 taillights on a little larger platform, add T-Tops The 70-81 models was a great run for Camaro
if GM drops camaro what are they going to use in NASCAR ???
The Dolt, er…Bolt. Just gotta find that 5-mile long extension cord. Ha!
The Camaro is not the sporty sleak looking touring car it started out as. I get change and improvements but this now is too big and looks more like a brick wearing a bow tie!
It’s tiny. That is part of the problem. Tiny little tank.
Having the best hardware and being by far the worst sales should prove that their designers suck.
I get how Challenger outsells being larger more comfortable and has a great modern retro look, but what does Mustang have over Camaro?
A lot outside looks great, the interior seating position and view looking out is worlds better, the 2.3,5.0, and 5.2 are all good options and you can actually put items in the truck. Chevrolet didn’t redo the Camaro they just put it on a smaller platform which made matter worse
Ford loyalists… and visibility! Not to mention the 5.0 the blue oval boys have is just as powerful as the 6.2 GM is using. The aftermarket for the mustang seems better too. I’m a Camaro guy, but after seeing designers shun what the buyers have been complaining about, it’s obvious why the Camaro is tanking… AGAIN!
Either fix the problem or stop production of the vehicle. What is the point of producing the car if it’s not selling. We all know if GM wants to fix whatever issues the car has ,it can . It’s just frustrating to try and understand why they don’t.
It’s pretty obvious when GM has clearly stated there will be no more hybrid vehicles from any GM brand. They want the Camaro to die off so they can produce a new electric vehicle, or spend those funds on current EV products. Really sad, because I liked my ‘17, but had to get rid of it for family reasons. My ‘86 Z/28 was my favorite body style after the original Camaro.
If you’re right, they for sure lose us as customers. We’ve had Camaros & Firebirds since 1979, & my wife wants a 2022 SS to replace her 2013 SS which I will inherit. Neither one of us would be interested in a battery powered vehicle.
the issue is Mary Barra, dump that idiot before she destroys what used to be a great company
I like the fact that only a few Camaro’s would be on my block. Not looking like the 75 other car’s is better in my book.
Bad bad example. Chevrolet has not produced any Camaro’s in months. So if do not not make any. You can not sell any. I work for a dealership. Have not had maybe 5 new Camaro’s this year. But also does not mention that they are around 10k over priced. The average Camaro buyer wants a 500 payment and a v8. Not a 6 or a 4.
The truth of the matter is GM doesn’t advertise this car. Plus during the Chip shortage they used chips available for better selling vehicles like trucks and SUV. The Camaro plant was idle there weren’t any chips this explains why the Camaro hasn’t sold. It was GM’s choice not to invest in this low production model during the chip shortage with the factory going ideal. I own a new 2021 LT1 after selling my 2020 1SS love the cars. No reason to hate on the car when it’s the supply issue.
I own a 20 SS Camaro, red hot, black rally stripes(kinda old school), black wheels, sun roof, and auto trans. There’s not a day goes by that I get tons of compliments and thumbs up. I love to drive the car because it’s fun and so are car shows. Maybe a ZL1 might be in my future if one could just order and get one!!!
HORSEPOWER SELLS! Look at Dodge. GM always in last place when it comes to horsepower that’s why your Camaro is at the bottom of the sales charts.
Wake up GM be bold once in your life!
I love Camaro but what GM is doing is not working……WAKE UP GM🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬
The only problem with this car is M A N A G E M E N T. They can destroy anything ever scared to Chevy loyalists. Ya gotta build them to have them place in a segment.
GM has been reduced to a feminized gm and they like battery powered toys.
It needs a new design. Time to ditch the hot wheels toy car look.
Everyone keeps lamenting, GM should have done this and they should have done that, but what they don’t realize is that GM doesn’t care about the Camaro! I’ll miss it too, but hey enjoy it while you can! As I stated in other posts the Camaro will probably come back as an E car in the 2030’s, it is what it is.
This is what happens. I hesitate to bring it up. Fire that woman president and hire a really good car guy. That should help the direction. There’s no spark. Just false hopes and thoughtless designs.
Such crying, you can’t sell what you don’t build. Why the expedition of the Camaro production over the Cadillac sedans, there’s no Camaros available. Is it some issues with the packaging sure but the 5G was just as cramped as anything else also. I’m sure the 7G will be more practical then the current version.
Can’t sell Camaro’s when they shut down production of them
Weren’t selling well long before production ended. I love the Camaro, the original, then the IROC-Z, and again with the 2017 I had. Wish I still had the ‘17, but some things are more important than cars. Bottom line is that GM designers care more about their egos than selling a re-invented pony car. Granted, when it was re-introduced as a 2010, it was at the top in sales for awhile. Then you could read all the owner complaints about the car, as well as non-owners, and you could actually read the comments from designers saying THEY liked the car as it is, and didn’t plan on changing it. Dodge has put out a vehicle that has crazy power (but still sucks in my opinion) and recently finally outsold the mustang in the most recent quarter. I guarantee Ford will not sit by and watch that happen very long at all! GM in typical fashion, will hit the snooze button and come late to the new party, wearing the wrong costume as they’ve done so many times in the past. Had dodge given up on the challenger like GM has done on SO many vehicles (Regal GNX, Syclone, Typhoon, Camaro) they would have missed out on their current success.
WAKE UP GM … time to stop hitting snooze in America while you focus on china!
You’re right. I’m there too. I doubt I’ll be buying any new models any time soon. Currently I’m driving a 2008 Trailblazer SS. Love it. Seriously doubt they’ll ever do that again. Hopefully it’ll last a very long time. I’ve had lots of early Camaros, Chevelles, and Trans Ams. Loved those early ’67-’73 models. The thought of only having a 4cyl or a V6 just doesn’t do it.
GM never marketed the Camaro, aside from the body styling disasters since 2015. Need to market cars to sell them! The horsepower is not the problem, the Z/28 and ZL1 will out pace any Dodge.
You apparently don’t go to the dragstrip. The Dodge is the king there.
I thought the Tesla model S was taking down stock challenger hellcats … guess I’ve seen the wrong drag strips too
“less-than-optimal cabin visibility” did you drive one? Visibility is already impaired by headrests, unless your head could turn 320° mirrors and camera will help in parking. Where else do you need visibility? I drive in front of me by looking out of the large windshield and large side windows. I keep hearing this false statement from Gen. V day one. If you want visibility buy an A class from M-B.
I did drive/own one, and visibility is definitely better in my older sister’s mustang! And forget about being able to see much of anything out the side/rear windows on the convertible. Yes, I too spend the majority of my time driving looking out my windshield, instead of at my phone, but I also look out the side windows an rear window too, which at times are more important than the windshield.
It’s not the Camaro that is known for running over people in crowds.
Headroom is also lousy besides visibility. And styling. It’s an extension of the original gen 1 design which is pretty much the same approach as Dodge has done with the Challenger which gets far better marketing support.
I like the second gen Camaro which had kind of an international vibe. I think that Camaro would be the model to follow for any present day attempt – it’s different enough to not be thought of as a clone of the Challenger nor the fastback Mustang. But then there is marketing and yada-yada, and I don’t know if GM would want to follow through with a car that occupies a market that could be on its last legs. The Mustang has begun transitioning over to electric, and where things are going for big HP cars is unsure.
How about upping the HP to 700-750 in the ZL1 just like Dodge and Ford are doing? All you need to do is put the larger Supercharger from the ZR1 on the Camaro. You have to give the customer a reason to buy it, keeping the same engines doesn’t do it for me.. I had the V6, SS, then the ZL1 and loved them, but when they stopped upping the HP i went to the Z06 Corvette .. I would have loved the ZL1 to have 750 HP then i would have moved up to that car. I think others are also correct that if you stay the same in style and engine, no one will be excited to move up and buy again..
FIRST OFF… GM HASNT BUILT ANY CAMAROS IN MONTHS DUE TO THE PLETHORA OF SHORTAGES GLOBALISTS ARE INDUCING.
SECONDLY, THE PRICE OF SS MODELS HAS HEIGHTENED DRAMATICALLY. I PAID 44K FOR MY 17 FULLY LOADED 2SS. PRICING NOW IS MIXED FROM LOW TO MID 50’S, IF YOU XAN FIND ONE. CAMARO IS NOT PRICE COMPETITIVE, NOR DO THEY ADVERTISE… ITS THE GLOBALIST STRATEGY FOR SPORTS CARS…
I own a 2019 SS, 1LE, and I have to say it is probably the best driving car I have ever owned. The power is great, the handling is amazing. I love the looks of the car and the visibility is not that bad, please stop with the visibility. I actually get excited to drive this car. I feel one with this vehicle and will definitely get another one after this one. I currently own a 2010 Z06, 2013 GT500, 2018 Demon. I have also had a 2009 Corvette Z51, 2005 Pontiac GTO, 1999 Mustang GT, 1996 Trans Am, 1990 Camaro RS, 2017 911 4S, and a 2015 Panamera S. Those are all the sport cars I have owned and like I said, the 2019 SS 1LE is probably my favorite. Hope Chevy takes the Camaro more seriously and actually trys to market and sell them. They are great vehicles!!
I can agree with all the issues with the 5th gen and beyond. GM had a great transition through Gen 1 through 4. They killed the car with the current models. Maybe this is part of their marketing strategy. However, I have a serious concern where the business minds are taking GM with there recent opening of another plant in China! Need to change out leadership from top down.

GM is afraid of the federal govt. and that is why mary went to see biden after he got in office to let him know GM was in his corner when it came to BEVs
I am still waiting to purchase a Camaro/convertible, if there is none on the lots of the dealerships and they can’t order any, how can anyone buy a Camaro when they are not available. I love the Camaro and I am waiting patiently to get one 2022 version when they are available, this is my dream car. Please, let me know when I can go to my Dealership and place my order. I have designed it and it has been priced so I can order it from the dealership. Make a few for the people who want one now, this way people like me can choose as to what we want to buy. Everyone has an opinion, I know. I have only good things to say about the Camaro, it’s a good-looking car and I can’t wait to get one.
The “once again” failed design of the 8 speed auto turns off buyers from another gm piece in their future. There are a plethora of reasons people aren’t buying Camaro’s but I suspect the top reason is that gm doesn’t need two Corvette like cars.
The Camaro is very very close to the Vette handling wise but is far behind the Dodge on the other type of driving. (going down the track). Hellcat and Demon own’s the Camaro and have no desire to compete with the Corvette hence they sell many more cars than does Camaro.
