Competitive Sales Comparison (USA)

Chevy Bolt EV sales saw a massive jump of nearly 335 percent during the second quarter of 2021, allowing the small electric model to increase its segment share by 3 percentage points.

The results keep the Bolt EV in second place in the mainstream dedicated electric and electrified vehicle segment, behind the Toyota Prius, which commanded 45 percent of the segment share with a 175 percent increase in sales volume. The Bolt EV outsold the rest of the segment, including the Hyundai Ioniq, the new-to-market Volkswagen ID.4 (which replaces the e-Golf), the Nissan Leaf – currently the most direct rival to the Bolt EV, the Honda Clarity – which was the only model to post a decline in sales – and the Toyota Mirai.

TOTAL +264.09% 54,796 15,050 +122.49% 87,411 39,288

As we always mention in these reports, it’s worth highlighting the fact that Toyota Prius and Hyundai Ioniq sales figures do not exclusively represent battery-electric vehicles, since those model ranges also include hybrid and plug-in hybrid variants. The case is similar for the Honda Clarity, which is available in Plug-In Hybrid, Electric and Fuel Cell variants.

The mainstream dedicated new energy vehicle segment expanded over 264 percent to 54,796 units in Q2 2021, meaning the Bolt EV significantly outperformed the segment.

The GM Authority Take

Low Chevy Bolt EV sales volume has typically been an area of concern given GM’s EV-focused strategy, which calls for launching 30 electric vehicles by the year 2025. As a result, the vehicle’s overly positive sales performance during the first half of 2021 represents a glimmer of hope that sales will continue to rise not just for the Bolt, but for EVs as a whole. In fact, a recent study found that 71 percent of U.S. drivers are considering an electric vehicle.

Despite the impressive 335 percent growth in Q2 2021 sales volume in the U.S. market, the Bolt’s EV’s sales volume is still quite low. In fact, Bolt EV sales accounted for less than half the number of Prius units sold during the quarter. Granted, most Prius models sold are hybrids and some are plug-in hybrids rather than pure EVs, so it’s not an apples-to-apples comparison. However, the comparatively low sales volume of the Chevy is an area of concern nonetheless.

2022 Bolt EV refresh

The Bolt EV has received a thorough refresh that has launched in mid-2021 as a 2022 model year vehicle. Updates to the model include new front and rear fascias, along with various improvements to the interior. The battery electric drivetrain remains the same. See more details on what’s in store for the 2022 Bolt EV.

2022 Bolt EUV

At the same time, the refreshed 2022 Bolt EV is being joined by a new sibling model called Bolt EUV, which is slightly larger and more spacious. The duo shares the GM BEV2 platform, along with the battery tech and powertrain. See more on the 2022 Bolt EUV.

It’s worth noting that the 2022 Bolt EV and EUV have recently started shipping to dealers across the U.S.

60KW battery pack, 249 mile EV range, starting price around $32K. I’m sure you can find a similarly priced EV with better stats
But GM builds more than 5 of these a year. So I don’t have to move to California, Jump thru a million hoops and win the damn lottery, Just to earn the privilege of buying one.

    1. does it come with complimentary fire insurance?

the day anyone feels owning a bolt is like winning the lottery will be the day pigs fly.

that isn’t a possiblity no matter how many bolts gm produces.

  3. I see the rural animal pokers here to dictate what’s a good vehicle for EV buyers. Stick to trucks, ‘k?.

    1. And the city folk are buying Teslas.
Must be why nobody wants a Bolt.

      1. Yes that’s all Tesla makes .. wouldn’t sells be 0 if nobody wants Bolts?. BTW it’s selling better than most GM cars today (I know the chip shortage).

  4. Chevy Bolt sales up 335%… Chevy Bolt fires up 33,000%. Coincidence? Who knows?? 🙃

Seriously the only EVs on the market that are compelling vehicles are Tesla’s.

  5. Sales up … it couldn’t have been from the $13,000 discount offered last quarter.

So are we having a Freedom of Speech here ?
Chevy is the only Vehicle I have ever owned.
Currently own 2007 Chevy HHR, and 2017 Chevy Colorado.
I want to dive into electric, but not when I see the issues with the Battery.
I just don’t want to charge my vehicle outside, I want it in my Garage.
I am probably going with a Tesla Model Y if they don’t resolve these issues.

  7. The Bolt EV is the ugliest EV in the American market. The styling gurus who let this thing through are morons. As a Volt and ELR owner – the market will need time to transition to full electric. The article compares the Prius sales to the Bolt (which is not fair) to show exaclty where the market is for vehicles in the US.

      1. I stand by my statement. It is still unavailable in the US and it is not an actual automobile but a NEV.

    1. That’s a weird thing to say. Or rather, ignorant. Of the two people I know with a Bolt, they are both republicans, or at least right wing, and have had covid shots.

  10. Bolt EV and Bolt EUV are both better looking for 2022.

No fires yet in the 2020 and later vehicles. Let’s keep the facts straight.

The 2020, 2021, and 2022 battery is also listed as 65+ or 66 kwh. The 60 kwh models are the ones that at times catch fire.

  11. Well Nate thats very good to hear now if we can only get the 67% of Republicans at haven’t had your shots we would be in good shape and I always see Fox News saying not to have the shot and on the Right side they are always negative on EV car…But I there are a few Republicans that are not like that my brother and sister-in-law are two of them
