Cat Named Walter Steals The Show In New Chevy Silverado Ad: Video

In most official advertisements for the Chevy Silverado, the pickup truck is the star of the show – with the actors or voiceover typically focusing on the truck’s features, capabilities and/or price. A new Silverado ad takes the spotlight off the truck, however, and instead directs the audience’s attention toward an adorable, fun-loving feline named Walter.

This humorous 60-second spot shows a Chevy Silverado 1500 owner taking his house cat, Walter, on a series of outdoorsy adventures in the full-size pickup truck. The owner treats Walter as if he was a Golden Retriever, shouting commands at him using his name, taking him hunting and fishing, playing fetch and even relying on him to help round up some cattle.

In one scene, Walter and the truck owner are playing fetch in a small inland lake. A nearby fisherman notices Walter jumping into the lake off the dock to fetch a stick, to which he replies “that’s incredible!” The truck owner mistakenly thinks he was talking about the Multi-Flex Tailgate on his Chevy Silverado and begins explaining how the multi-position tailgate works to the fisherman. The fisherman then clarifies that he was talking about the cat, but the truck owner doesn’t understand why he’d be amazed at Walter’s fetching abilities. After all, to him, Walter’s just being Walter.

“Meet a truck guy whose best friend isn’t a dog — it’s a cat,” Chevy’s description for the ad says. “Onlookers are amazed by this cat who acts just like a dog, but this Silverado owner thinks that his Multi-Flex Tailgate — with six different configurations — is way more amazing.”

This advertisement has a much more humorous and fun-loving tone than most Chevy Silverado advertisements, and it seems viewers are responding positively to it. The ad, which first aired during coverage for the Tokyo Summer Olympics, generated 25.3 million TV impressions between July 23rd and July 26th, according to iSpot.tv. It has also generated more than 130,000 views on the Chevy YouTube channel, with the video boasting 2,200 Likes and just 22 Dislikes as of this writing.

  4. So the cat: goes hunting; chases livestock; dives in a lake and comes up with a fish in his mouth.
I think the part of Walter was originally supposed to played by a good ol’ county boy. Probably got sick with Covid after refusing to get vaccinated. So GM got the cat to fill in.

  5. We own a 2017 Chevy Silverado & it is a great truck! Wish we had that tailgate! This is an amazing commercial using the cat because it grabs the viewer’s attention & keeps it besides showing off what great features the tailgate has. This commercial has earned its place just like Budweiser’s commercials did using the dogs, Clydesdale horses, frogs, & geckos. Way to go Chevy!

  9. I love, Love, LOVE this ad! I too was watching the Olympics and saw this commercial. I played it back 3,4 times. The funny thing , to me, is I just got chewed out from my neighbor, because my cat grabbed one of her gold fish from her pond. “I caught your cat Red-Handed killing my gold fish!” (she WAS pissed!) There I am laughing. When my cats aren’t fishing, I need them to watch the new Chevy ad. “Hey guys, it’s Walter!” Back to the tailgate, I have been waiting forever for this. I didn’t want to buy the GMC Sierra, because I just think they are plain “UGLY.” My last 5 or 6 trucks have been GMC Sierras. But, I just can’t stand the grille on the new ones. Maybe, after the new make over? But, I can’t wait on GM forever. I Want that new tailgate! I am happy about there Not having the Shut-off” feature. The starter and flywheel will last longer, too.

  21. What I’m interested in is how filming was accomplished. Is some of it computer generated or does the cat actually perform? I had a cat who fetched but I’ve always heard that you can teach a cat only one trick.

    Reply
    1. I read a tweet from director/producer of the ad agency who created it. They used identical tabbies (I think there were nine) who had different skills, like bursting out of a screen door, carrying the stick out of water, etc. and then filled in with small parts of CGI in between. The cats had an air conditioned trailer but the people who worked on it did not!

    2. Cats can be reached lots of things. My cat will sit and stare at me at the same time look at her platform, back in forth. I’ll say “are you hunger? Which causes her to look up to her platform. After a few minutes I’ll say ‘go high’ and up she goes, sitting quite and patiently waiting for her dish of food. She wont start eating till I say enjoy. Then she will eat, if I don’t say enjoy she’ll sit there looking at the food and me, waiting to hear enjoy. She has several things she’ll do.

      Reply
    3. You can teach a cat more than one thing. I never worked at teaching them anything much, but I talk to them all the time, so they know a lot of stuff such as “Are you coming?” (they have a cat door, but they like to have humans hold the door for them), “Your daddy is home.” (and so they know I’m urging them to go downstairs where my husband has come in.) And the only one that does it consistently is my youngest and she plays fetch. Two of them who like treats know if they come to me when I’m getting insulin, that I will give them treats, so they don’t miss that time. And a myriad of other things. I’m not sure about the older ones, but I could probably teach a lot of that to my younger one. She’s part Siberian, so she is fine with water.

  22. Simply fun, good commercial. I get so tired of staid, straight stuff that is used over and over again. I do not know how TV stations in other areas are doing, but the latest gimmick up here in No. Michigan is to play the same ad twice during a commercial break. Sickening. I would not mind seeing Walter twice however. Creative and catchy. Commercials must be expensive to make, cuz too many of them are aired over and over and over again…and most are not good.

  24. Was that a real cat doing those stunts or camera trick like a dog in a cat outfit. If it’s a real cat, that’s amazing. Love it! If I could find a cat like that, I would get one. I’m not a fan of cats because of how cats behave. They don’t do anything and you can’t do anything with them. Dogs, way more enjoyable even though they bark; they’re very entertaining.

    1. Actually, it depends on how much time you want to take. They learn from observation like opening doors and cabinets, and they learn from being talked to. But you can train a cat to do all sorts of things if you want to take the time.

  25. Great commercial, the cat owner sure looks familiar. And every perspective has a bit of truth but a cat fetching, herding, swimming to retrieve is novel. Good job Chevy. Now come up with an answer to Ford Lightning.

  28. I’m a Ford 150 gal, but I love the GMC commercial with Walter the cat. Very catchy and not expected. I have cats that have learned when dinner time is and Bella gives me kisses for her dinner. Those r real cats for the most part being used in the ad. Multiple Walter’s.

    Reply
  29. The cat only does one actual trick. That’s fetching the stick from the lake. Most cats will recognize their name. Whether they do anything in response depends on how they feel about it.

I have three cats (and I’ve had several more during my lifetime-I’m 70) and they can learn way more than one command. The one that currently gets people’s attention is asking “are you coming?” when I’m leaving a room. Mine have “Cat holes” in some doors (I babysit the dogs of a friend of mine and they can’t get to the litter box through the cat holes) but the cats prefer to have someone hold the door for them, entitled little monsters that they are. But they can learn lots of things. Two of the three walk on leashes. One does play fetch. I just didn’t really bother teaching them anything. Though I have watched them teach each other, and one “attends” when I”m giving my insulin shots and gets treats when I’m done.

I looked for the shadows being in the wrong place. Walter chasing a cow might be CGI, I can imagine how to set that up, but it can be harder to get the cat to perform with a big scary animal. A lot of cats can do the rest.

Reminds me of our old cat Spice, fetched, heeled when we were walking, fended off other cats and dogs (shortly after having her put down, we were vacuuming a spot that she used – a cat stalking our fence line took one whiff and took off running.) Fun to have pets in the commercials instead of showing how the vehicle can corner in traffic, climb rocks, and sit at a light. this is as good as the racoons stealing the garbage truck.

  45. Just thought the commercial was awesome! To bad galactic and his little racist pinheaded comment had to come out, because he probably couldn’t help himself. And as for jmom, so what if the spelling of “your” was incorrect, you still knew what was being said. The real issue here is, instead of playing the middle game you better decide which side “you’re” going to be on!? The Red/fascist Trump side or Democratic Peoples Government! Everyone has to decide now because the party what was the republican party is determined to take this country back to precivilwar!! By hook, crook, or war!
