Competitive Sales Comparison (USA)

The 120 percent jump in Cadillac Escalade sales during the second quarter of 2021 follows the 75 percent increase in Q1 2021, which was proceeded by a 6 percent rebound during Q4 2020 and a 56 percent drop in Q3 2020, the decline being the result of diminished inventory. As such, the Escalade remained (by far) the best-selling model in the full-size luxury SUV segment, with a dominant 56 percent segment share, meaning that the Escalade outsold all rivals combined, including:

  • Lincoln Navigator (see Lincoln Navigator sales), which came in second place with 4,396 deliveries for a 23 percent segment share
  • Infiniti QX80, which took third place with 3,289 deliveries and 17 percent segment share
  • Lexus LX, which came in last place with 949 deliveries and 5 percent segment share

The full-size luxury SUV segment expanded nearly 59 percent to 19,508 units in Q2 2021, meaning that the 120 percent growth in Escalade sales significantly outperformed the segment average. In fact, the Escalade’s performance represented the largest sales increase of all models in the segment.

Below, we’ve included sales figures of full-size luxury crossovers for the sake of reference. Though they differ mechanically from the aforementioned body-on-frame SUVs by having a unibody construction, they are typically cross-shopped and considered as alternatives. Currently, the only full-size luxury crossovers are the Mercedes-Benz GLS-Class and the new BMW X7, though Audi is rumored to be working on a future Q9.

The GM Authority Take

In addition to experiencing a substantial 120 percent growth, the Escalade outsold all of its direct rivals on a combined basis during Q2 2021. We attribute the solid performance to very healthy acceptance of and interest in the all-new, 2021 Escalade.

The all-new model has been rolling off the line at the GM Arlington plant since Q3 2020, though with some production disruptions. Assuming no interruptions to production and supply, we expect Escalade sales to continue increasing substantially as availability of the all-new model improves in the medium-term future. However, the ongoing semiconductor shortage might derail that scenario. So far, The General has been prioritizing its microchip supply for several plants, including the Arlington Assembly plant, in order to maintain an adequate supply of the highly-lucrative vehicles that are built there.

  1. Am glad Cadillac can hold down the American Luxury SUV market, Lincoln want to be the SUV Luxury Company but can’t sell 8k Navigators wow

    1. I think perhaps Navigator sales are held down by the existence of the Aviator. They’re both excellent products. But the Aviator is less expensive and arguably better looking.

It’s been disappointing to see the Navigator fall from grace in terms of sales. And the Navigator invented the segment. It’s best year was its first full year on the market. 1998. Sales were 46K. 2019 sales were 18K.

      1. Aviator sells have nothing to do with Navigator sells it’s all about poor marketing strategy, FORD puts FORD 1st and LINCOLN 2nd which means the 2 or there on competition. Aviator can’t sell a 10th of what the Explorer can because it came out got all the attention 1st and have all the same options minus the 30 way seats controls, FORD has to let LINCOLN be its on Luxury Brand instead of a SUV Company the only SUV it’s being compared with is FORD that’s why CADILLAC and CHEVROLET owns the full size SUV market

        1. The LINCOLN MARK-E should have came out before the Mustang MACH-E which shouldn’t be called MARK-E it’s only going to confuse customers and the Mustang MACH-E will over shadow LINCOLN model again

  4. C’mon this small batch can’t be a measure of success for Escalade. It should outsell Range Rover and all the close enough size german suvs combine, because it is capable of that and GM is missing out on sales by the thousands for just not adding one more upper trim level. The world is not enough for this beast.

  7. Where are all the Mary Barra haters? The 2021 Escalate was conceived well after she became CEO, so the haters can’t say it was already in progress with the previous (male) CEO.

  8. According to one Cadillac dealer near me, people are consistently trading in Rovers (full-size and Sports) on new Escalades.
