Body Shop Creates Regular Cab Short Box Chevy Silverado Trail Boss

Earlier this week, we featured a unique GMC Sierra 1500 Regular Cab Short Box that had been customized by a wheel shop in Mexico to look like a factory-made Denali. Now the same shop, JC Wheels, is back with yet another unique Regular Cab creation – this time based on the Chevy Silverado 1500.

Before we get into details on the truck itself, we should explain what it is that we’re looking at. General Motors offers a Regular Cab Short Box version of the Chevy Silverado 1500 in Mexico, but it’s only available in a solitary ‘Work Truck’ trim level. So while Mexican customers can order the vehicle in a body style not available to Americans, they can only choose from a single bare-bones trim.

This is where JC Wheels steps in. The aftermarket shop has taken a standard Chevy Silverado 1500 WT in the Regular Cab Short Box body style and applied various parts and components from the Trail Boss trim level to it. While this is a custom creation, it appears to have been built using genuine GM parts, incorporating a Trail Boss front fascia, Trail Boss badging, OEM Chevy alloy wheels, red front tow hooks and OEM side assist steps. The shop also applied a custom three-inch lift to the truck, along with some dark aftermarket window tint.

While we realize a truck like this would sell in very small numbers here in the United States, we wish GM would offer such a vehicle domestically – even if for a brief period of time. That said, the automaker’s Double Cab and Crew Cab trucks are flying off dealer lots, so there’s little reason for GM to change its current, very successful pickup truck strategy.

Let us know what you think of this custom Chevy Silverado 1500 Trail Boss in the comments below.

  1. And the body shop is stupid.
Enjoy the lawsuits when that truck rolls over.

  2. The wheels are nasty but otherwise this is cool. Why GM (I refuse to put this in lower case) doesn’t make such a vehicle defies logic.

    1. It’s a huge liability issue.
High center of gravity = higher rollover risk.
Ironically it seems the thumbs down clan failed science in school.

      1. Chevrolet makes a single cab trail boss for the Middle East. Maybe GM engineers failed science in school too?

      2. So what your saying is all the Jeep’s need to be lowered?
Along with mid side trucks because all these are narrower than this truck

  3. I clicked the end survey question , “yes” , for a production version of this truck and it came back 100% chosen. Am I the only one who voted? If not, doesn’t this tell GM something ???? So weird, if people had a suggestion for my GC business, I would definitely listen! At least have a reply! They say there’s no demand for these vehicles, but…..

    1. Nope, you aren’t the only one who voted. I voted with my wallet, too. 2017 Sierra RCSB 2wd owner here. I’d like a new one too, but I can’t get one.

    2. I voted yes as well. I believe there is a strong market for the vehicle, I’m currently looking for a 2013 Colorado WT reg cab, don’t want, don’t need 4 doors. GM offer it in the WT trim w/ac/cruise/amfm/pwr windows & locks, auto, cloth seats, and carpeted floors. By the way GM, you too Ford an Dodge, we need basic pickups, get out of the ego-mobiles, and build what is needed. And GM … I’d option for the great 4 cyc you currently offer as well. In closing, we can’t buy it if you don’t offer it … that means there are folks out there who will forgo your products, my 8 foot trailer behind my Ford auto does quite well … I don’t really need the pickup, I’d just like to have one.

    3. I think if they followed this pattern but made a modern K5 it would sell pretty well considering the Bronco and Jeep love affairs currently in the public mind. perhaps like most things GM they will wait a while, finally build it after it is too late and then wonder why it won’t sell

      Reply
      1. Kia already makes a K5 and owns that name

  4. A work truck needs room. A USA version would get the attention of very young buyers because it’s low cost and real cool to add aftermarket stuff. 4WD with a short WB would make it an off roader. Other than the CAMARO, GM has no real offerings to attract the youngest buyers in the market. These young buyers will eventually need larger vehicles as marriage, family and homes get added to the equation. You want them to be GM vehicles.

  6. How can I get a plain Regular Cab short/standard bed (no long bed) WT from Mexico? Seriously!

    Reply
    1. John Rentko: It may not meet crash rating because of no tests and 6.2L will kill their EPA credits.

You’ll probably have to go to Mexico, pay cash, wait for a title, probably with a Mexico address with insurance, cross the border and go through customs and declare the vehicle. In your state you may need to pay sales tax since it’ll be too new and transfer of title could be a hassle if all the import paper work is not in order. if your state has emissions requirement testing will need to be done.

So call this company in Mexico and ask if they can “export” one to the US. If they can it will be big dollars.

  7. Drop a 6.2l in it and I’m sure GM could see a lot of these.

  10. When GM stopped making the Regular Cab SWB trucks the Ford store down the road started ordering more of the F150 regular cab SWB….they sell more than ever now. Crazy how GM builds the SWB Regular Cab here in the USA and ships to Mexico and the Middle East. GM always says “You spoke and we listen”…. sorry but I don’t see that and been with Chevy for 27 years. Why not listen to the Front Line? We are in front of the consumers daily. Carry on….

  11. Didn’t think GM ended these, my dad has a 2019 WT Silverado (Canada) he traded in a 2014 Z71 Crew Cab. He wanted to go back to basic, like his 1984 & 87 he had, he loves his 2018. And I know he’ll be looking for another in the next year or two, some come on GM.

    1. Personally I think GM have their head up their ass not offering a regular cab truck with a better trim package. Many people have no need for an extended or 4 door cab. If you don’t offer the product of course there is no sales of it. Case of ignorance turning into stupidity by GM.

      1. I have been waiting for them to make a regular cab long bed in the 1500 LT version or better trim level than the ugly work truck since they stopped making them in 2018!!! Not everyone wants an extended cab!
Make a nice truck for the working man GM!

  15. Obviously, GM isn’t interested in something like this, as cool and as fun to drive as it might be, “the powers that be” within GM haven’t a clue as to what keeps our interest in light duty trucks, not all of us want a loaded, 4 door, 4X4 top of the line truck for close to if not right at 70 grand or more! These trucks are “HUGE” and you can’t drive them to the Mall or any regular parking lot and try to park these beast anywhere even close to the entrance of any store (although some arrogant, in your face A-Hole will certainly try to do this and take up two spots or at least a spot and a half!), and although I own an extended cab Silverado Z71 right now, I’d love to find something like this but at a more reasonable cost as I’m sure when any dealer gets a hold of a truck like this (especially for warranty work) there will be adeniums place right next to the MSRP that would send this trucks final cost right into the realm of “crazy money”, then again, I suppose that to some, having a truck like this top out at the same price as a loaded top of the line Silverado “High Country” wouldn’t be a problem to those who would use this type of vehicle as a “Show Off Vehicle” and not as a daily driver like many of us would appreciate.
Oh well, for me, this would be a really cool truck, perhaps not as fully loaded as this one is (I’d prefer a 2WD version) but of course the chances of GM/Chevy/GMC actually producing such a fun truck is “zilch”…in fact you’d have a better chance of the Sun not coming up tomorrow than finding something like this in your local GM light duty truck dealership. Too bad.

  16. These RCSB trucks seem to make the perfect overlander vehicle. Great approach/departure angles, great break over angle due to short wheel base. Alot more functional than a 4 door jeep wrangler or gladiator. I’m seeing more and more RCSB fords converted for overlander use sense they still sell a RCSB. There are examples on the TFL and Truck King you tube channels. Petty neat to see what the guys are out there doing with these RCSB trucks.

  18. Dang good point Jerry! Like black being the number one choice for interior color because it’s the ONLY choice! GM constantly tells us we don’t want something because they don’t offer it when in reality we didn’t want it in the numbers THEY wanted. This would sell but I bet it has more to do with that stupid carbon footprint formula where a lighter, shorter vehicle pollutes more because it’s wheel base is too short.
    Great thinking.

  22. Been driving rcsb trucks since 1970s. Over the years was always told, ‘you have to have an 8′ bed’. Now my 6′-6″ bed is longer than many trucks out there. I have no need for a back seat and the cost that goes with it. I appreciate 1 19″ wb , too.

  25. I would buy one in a heartbeat. I would put a canopy and boat loader on it. With the 3″ lift, bring a short box, it would cruise thru any FSR deactivations here in the BC interior, making it a great offroad flyfishing rig.

  30. GM made a Very Dumb Decision to cancel Short Bed Silverado Regular Cab pickups! Over a million US Military Veterans have served in Operations Desert Shield, Desert Storm, Desert Fox, Iraqi Freedom, Enduring Freedom, and several other desert conflicts. Now, we have returned home only to see that GM still manufactures these trucks – but they are only available for purchase in the same countries we deployed to and defended, They are not available to any of us here in the US, and particularly US Veterans that have returned from these conflicts hoping to purchase one. This is like a slap in the face to all US Military Veterans who have served and defended this country, and many Veterans that continue serving our country. It is ridiculous that these classic body style pickups are not available for purchase here in the US.
