GMC shared a photo of the new 2022 GMC Canyon Denali Black Edition on its Instagram page this week, providing us with our first official look at this new equipment package. Tagged with RPO code PEF, the Denali Black Edition package includes the following:
- 20″ aluminum, low gloss Black wheels (RPO RZO)
- Black, 5″ rectangular assist steps (RPO RVS)
- GMC Black Chrome Exhaust Tip (RPO VTA)
- All Weather Floor Liners (RPO AAK)
Adding the Denali Black Edition package also deletes the following equipment, which typically comes standard on the Canyon Denali:
- 5″ chrome production assist steps (RPI E15)
- Standard polished exhaust tip (RPO VQZ)
The Denali Black Edition Package is only available to order in conjunction with the Onyx Black exterior color (RPO GBA) and the Jet Black interior upholstery color (RPO H2X). It is also not available
to order with the available Power Package (RPO PDG), Cat-Back Performance Exhaust Upgrade System (RPO WBC), All-weather floor mats (RPO VAV), or All-weather floor liners (RPO RIA).
Pricing for the 2022 GMC Canyon Denali has not yet been announced, so it’s not clear how much the Black Edition will cost either. Prices for the 2021MY GMC Canyon Denali start at $42,890 for a Crew Cab Short Box model with two-wheel-drive.
The 2022 GMC Canyon will represent the final model of the truck before the next-generation Canyon is introduced for the 2023MY. The 2023 GMC Canyon will ride on an updated version of GM’s current GMT-31XX midsize body-on-frame architecture, which will be dubbed 31XX-2. Under the hood will be the turbocharged 2.7L I-4 L3B gasoline motor currently offered in the GMC Sierra 1500, while the model’s atmospheric 2.5L I-4 LCV and 3.6L V-6 LGZ, along with the 2.8L I-4 LWN turbodiesel Duramax will be dropped.

Great. Another blacked-out package. Correct me if I’m wrong. Isn’t the entire purpose of the Denali to give customers something a little more fancy with lots of chrome? Personally, I could care less about the GMC brand. Even when I was selling them along side Buick and Cadillac, I didn’t care for it. Just seems like a waste of investment dollars going to GMC and trying to make them different from Chevy, when that money could be better used giving Cadillac and Buick more and better products. Let the GMC buyers go to Chevy.
The expression is “COULDNT care less” but I agree…Denali should = More Chrome!!
It is good to know most intelligent people today understand that the profit margin on the GMC line is like printing money.
While the black edition is not my choice it will make money.
C8.R: I’m not sure anyone has to be intelligent to see that every GMC model has it’s Chevrolet twin. The only half exception for now is the Acadia being slightly different from the Traverse, while still playing in the same category. If you take every Chevy product that mirrors the GMC’s, then you could say that Chevy is printing money with those. In the past, my argument was that if GM felt the need to keep GMC around, then don’t offer fancy Chevy trucks/SUV’s that just compete directly with the GMC! Like I said above, the money diverted to GMC only takes away from money that should be given to Cadillac and Buick development.
Back when I was at the Buick, Cadillac, GMC and Honda store is when they dropped both Oldsmobile and Pontiac both. At that time, I agreed with them getting rid of Olds (same reason why I feel they need to drop GMC now) and of course i felt that way because I sold the Buick. However, I never understood why in the heck GM decided to kill Pontiac and keep GMC.
Might note that Cadillac also has basically the same platforms as Chevy too with much lower volume.
C8.R
Not the same. Although you are right that they share many similar or same platforms, the difference is huge.
Buick and Olds: Buick won.
Plymouth and Dodge. Dodge won.
GMC and Chevy: Both still exist. Why? And if they keep them both, then they need to make Chevy’s products into base vehicles for work related and stop selling things like the High Country models, etc. All that does is kick GMC in the balls. If Chevy is going to keep offering high content models, then why have GMC? Kill GMC and pour that product development money into Buick and Cadillac.
Dan no matter your own personal feeling the fact GMC is making a ton of Money and big return on the investment., Yes they share with other brands in GM so the cost if GMC is low. As long as people are willing to pay more for them over the Chevy more power to GMC.
The money saved would not be much for one since development cost is minimal. The Denali branding is the best GM has as it is the most recognized outside the Corvette. People don’t even say you have a GMC they say you have a Denali. Cadillac could only wish they had that.
To be honest Buick would never survive with out GMC. It would not work selling Chevy trucks at a Buick dealer. In fact it is difficult to find a stand alone Buick dealer vs we still have stand along GMC dealers.
Transaction prices for a GMC dealer locally is nearly $70,000 They were offered Buick and refused.
Olds was gone because they had nothing of value left and were not worth keeping. Pontiac had lost their way and by the bail out they had nothing to offer but heavily discounted cars. It was too late for Lutz to save. Lets face it the first year GTO did not get hood scoops due to the lack of money hence no new body either. I spoke to Simmons from Pontiac on the scoops and he told me direct that they had no money and were just lucky to have what they wanted.
GM really had no clue what to do with Pontiac and to be honest the real Pontiacs died in the early 80’s with their last V8 and Fiero their only unshared car and platform.
I was a Pontiac buyer and I did not want to see them go. I still own one Pontiac but I get it. As for GMC it is pure economics. A blind accountant could easily understand why there is a GMC and why their will continue to be a GMC. THEY MAK MONEY!
If the other divisions had the profit ratio of GMC they would be just killing it.
The only concern I have is that they had worked to make GMC different than Chevy but now they are starting to offer similar models again. Like the ZR2 GMC version. While there is an argument for it there is also one against it.
We bought the wife a Acadia recently because we did not want a Traverse. Too large for our needs. But we also got the same suspension as the Cadillac at a lower price. The Acadia is one of the best driving CUV models for the money in Denali form with the Variable Suspension. I would buy a Sierra for the Tailgate and HUD alone.
To be honest the money would have gone to waste at Cadillac as they can not establish who they really are with the revolving door of managers. I hope the EV program stops this. Buick only exist due to China. Even then GMC would have taken their place here if they had gone out.
C8.R: I get what you are saying and I don’t disagree with it. So then Chevrolet needs to stop kicking GMC in the balls with their High Country models or anything above a work truck trim.
I like GM. I’ve certainly had my complaints with them over the years, but I still feel GM is one of the best out there. I like Chevrolet. I like Buick. I love Cadillac. I liked Olds. I liked Pontiac even though it wasn’t my preference. I always though Hummer and Saturn were a total waste of time and money for GM. Buying Saab was understandable, but they purchased a dead horse and tried to revive it. So in my lifetime, that comes down to GMC. I’ve never understood the purpose and reason to keep them when they have Chevy. But yes, GMC prints money just like the Tahoe, Suburban, Silverado, Traverse, Escalade and XT5/XT6.
Oh, forgot to mention this. I certainly think you are severely under-estimating the costs involved to market a brand. The costs to makes the Chevy just a little different to call it GMC. The costs to tool the plants to make that GMC along side the Chevy. You say it’s not that much. It’s actually a lot.
It is not me but GM that has stated that GMC is very profitable and valuable.
Full size Denali SUV and Trucks kick high country to the country.
You take GMC away too and then Cadillac and Buick lose their profit centers.
This was true in 2014, 2018 and yet today.
GMC is more profitable than Cadillac.

Interested read in this tread…since the early seventies GMC offered a few more options than Chevrolet’s top model, but Chevrolet outsold GMC based on price and work trucks. Today, the trend continues with standard options such as 6.2 motors HUD, high tech electronics, high tech safety electronics, and leading edge development in GMC and Cadillac. Chevrolet has them too but not all innovations are shared with Chevrolet until they become mainstream and prices drop with production. I believe there are different buyers for all 3 logos…example, shopping for a SUV, 9 different reasonable priced SUVs which include 3 from gm. Of the 3, 3k-6k difference from each top models due to options, Cadillac being the highest… I bought the Chevrolet Premier Traverse. Not the most optioned but has the same electronics and safety features and v6, same 20″ wheels same platform bla…bla… Cost less. There are certainly people out there wanting the name of Cadillac and Buick. Note: no GMC model in this segment unless you call the Acadia a competitor, which I don’t since my daughter owns one and its smaller, but same options and features… IMO, I see a market for each…
I see a bigger play with the big models. Escalade…damn…
BTW, the GMC Canyon out sold the Chevrolet Colorado in 2nd Qtr this year.
IMO, the black out option did not go far enough…that chrome grill needs to have a black out option with a black bumper.
GM was smart on the Lambda platform, They have cut and sliced it into many forms and sizes in various price ranges to meet most needs. Under the skin most are the same only the body and the options vary.,
We have an Acadia that is exactly the size we want. We looked at the Traverse and rejected it as we don’t need a vehicle that large. The Xt5 is too small and the XT6 is too expensive for what it is. The Acadia with the discounts and GM card money made us a good deal.
Also note the Acadia also has the Cadillac Suspension on the Denali. It is very good riding and handling in their tune.
The Traverse and Blazer both are nice but we like the extra options on the Acadia with out the Cadillac price.
Black Edition with all the chrome in the wrong places…. Black out the window trim color match the door handles, mirror caps and fender trim this is what people want in a black edition not
20″ aluminum, low gloss Black wheels (RPO RZO)
Black, 5″ rectangular assist steps (RPO RVS)
GMC Black Chrome Exhaust Tip (RPO VTA)
All Weather Floor Liners (RPO AAK) are the standard Denali liners chrome?
Missing the boat as usual gm (GM)
GM. is going to lose sales with only one engine option , i have not read anything about the 2.7 that impresses me,look at the MPG. comparison between the 2.7 and the 5.3 in the full size pick up… tell us what is the advantage is … what am i missing….what will be mpg difference on the highway between the 3.6 and the 2.7 … yes i know there is a performance h.p benefit with the 2.7 but i dont think the 2.7 on the highway will get better mpg.
