As GM Authority covered previously, General Motors will offer the 2022 Chevy Silverado 1500 Limited as a sort of “stop-gap” to bridge the 2021 model-year vehicle with the fully refreshed 2022 Chevy Silverado. Now, GM Authority has learned that the 2022 Chevy Silverado 1500 Limited LT Trail Boss will also offer an optional diesel engine.
Previously, the 2021 Chevy Silverado 1500 LT Trail Boss was equipped with either the naturally aspirated 5.3L V8 L84 as standard, or the naturally aspirated 6.2L V8 L87 as optional. Now, the 2022 Chevy Silverado 1500 Limited LT Trail Boss adds the 3.0L I6 LM2 turbodiesel Duramax to the trim’s engine lineup.
Under the hood of the 2022 Chevy Silverado 1500 Limited LT Trail Boss, the 3.0L I6 LM2 turbodiesel Duramax will mate to a 10-speed automatic transmission.
As a reminder, the 2022 Chevy Silverado 1500 Limited carries over several aspects of the 2021 Chevy Silverado into the 2022 model year, ushering in the new model year prior to the arrival of the refreshed 2022 Chevy Silverado, the latter of which has been delayed due to issues related to the COVID-19 pandemic.
The fully refreshed 2022 Chevy Silverado 1500 will introduce new exterior styling and a completely overhauled cabin space, as well as the inclusion of the new Global B electronic architecture, which will enable the Silverado to offer the very latest tech features, including GM’s Super Cruise semi-autonomous driver assist system.
However, prior to the arrival of the 2022 Chevy Silverado 1500, the 2022 Chevy Silverado 1500 Limited will bridge the gap from the 2021 model year, offering the same trim levels, exterior colors, and interior colors. Order books open July 15th, while production of the 2022 Chevy Silverado 1500 Limited will kick off at the GM Silao plant in Mexico on September 20th, 2021, and the GM Fort Wayne Assembly plant in Indiana on September 27th, 2021.

I have a 2020 with this diesel, and i could NOT be Happier!!! Fuel economy is fantastic. 36.6 mpg driving at 60. 25 in the city. The features make me giggle. I love the heated steering wheel in the winter. I love the trailer towing rear camera. I love how it pulls my 23’ Airstream with NO Trouble what so ever. (17.6 mpg pulling the trailer) I love the computer which tells me things. Like having my wife with me all the time. 😊. Seat belt needs fastening. Turn signal is on. etc. etc. I went back tot the dealer and told the sales person that he should sell nothing else but the truck with this amazing diesel.. Thank You. 🥳
Quick question, you 2wd or 4wd? All season or AT tires? What’s your 75mph mpg? I’m on the fence with this one or the 5.3
If you value your money get the diesel.
If you want you wallet to bleed in agony then get the 5.3 and enjoy having the valves & lifters fail.
So will the duramax be offered on the 2022 refresh or is this just an attempt to entice buyers for the limited?
I know a couple guys that have the diesel in a 1500 and they happy with it. One guy thinks it uses too much DEF, but other than that, nothing but compliments on the engine. Glad to see GM expand the availability of it. With gas continuing to go up, the mpg of the diesel makes it more attractive. I am also happy to see that the upcharge for it is within reason.
This move puts more Trail in TrailBoss, honestly should’ve been an option from the start. I’m glad they didn’t follow Ford by discontinuing 1/2 ton diesels. GM hit the sweet spot with the 3.0, from the reviews I’ve read it really shines compared to the others.
I owned the 2020 6.2 Trail Boss LT for just under a year and traded it for a 2021 GMC Sierra AT4 1500 with the 3.0. Fuel consumption aside, towing with this 3.0 in the mountains of Colorado just cannot be compared with the 6.2. the 3.0 handles the mountains under tow very easily, and gets better fuel economy by far than the 6.6L Duramax pulling the same load, let alone more than twice as much as the 6.2 gas. The only downside is the exhaust brake that supposedly exists. In tow-haul mode the exhaust brake is pretty much non existent. The 6.2 and the 10 speed transmission performed better in this regard. Going down hills under tow the 6.2 was excellent. In the 3.0 Duramax I am constantly either in the manual shift mode and/or braking on the same grades that the 6.2 easily handled. Still, I love the 3.0 Duramax because of every other aspect. Just passing 10K miles and no issues. It certainly uses DEF at a higher rate than my LMM 6.6 did. Still, the quietness and smooth running overshadows all other powertrains when coupled with the 10 speed transmission. One other note, the 6.2 seemed to always be in the right gear but skipped gears to use only what was needed for the torque and power settings. The 3.0 Duramax goes through every gear up and down. I only notice this because I use a ODBII gauge that shows me the range. Get the 3.0 Duramax!
Can not order a 2022 because GM has no allocations.
What the hell is going on. Suppose to order on the 15th but still can do it.
What is going on GM. Please open up orders for 2022.
i just talked to my salesman, no ordering yet ???
Why does gm not put the 3.0 diesel in the Colorado and Canyon? They are dropping the current diesel in those two trucks. Why not use this engine? Will it not fit? It has better specs all around, including better mileage, than the diesel in the ColCan.
I have asked the same question. That engine at the same power specs would be amazing.
The numbers would be great but probably because it is too long, it is a straight 6 and the engine bay was designed for a V6 and I4.
Not a long enough engine bay.

I thought it’ was some kind of cooling issue was the reason why they didn’t offer it at first in the trail boss why now????
Trail BOSS
Wish they could have come up with a better name…ugh
There is a world wide chip shortage. Noone has hardly any new vehicles and to make matters worse there are none made in the u.s.vit effects phones. Computers. We have been waiting for a Bosch dishwasher for 7 months. My neighbor’s battery from tesla did not have a chip. He waited many months to get. My husband and myself both bought a 2021 Chevy Trail Boss by putting a deposit on Truck’s that had been ordered. He got one in March and I got one in May. This dealership usually has one hundred Trucks and hundreds of new cars. They have 37 new vehicles right now as of July 23, 2021.
