The 2022 Chevy Equinox compact crossover will feature LED headlights as standard equipment on all trim levels as part of the model’s mid-cycle enhancements.
This is quite the turnaround from the 2021 Chevy Equinox, which has LED headlights as standard only in the range-topping Premier trim level. Meanwhile, the now-discontinued base L trim as well as the LS include halogen composite headlights, while the LT sports high intensity discharge (HID) lights.
For the 2022 model year, the LED headlights will be available across the trim level line-up, which now consists of LS, LT, RS and Premier.
The deletion of L and introduction of RS variants are two of several changes brought by the mid-cycle enhancement (MCE) for the Chevy Equinox, which had to be delayed by a year due to consequences arising from the COVID-19 pandemic. The update will also include a new front grille and lower front fascia, a revised rear bumper, a new range of exterior colors, Automatic Parking Assist and wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

The Chevy Equinox was the second best-selling Chevrolet, and the third best-selling GM vehicle, in the United States in the first half of 2021, with sales of 118,666 units. It was beaten only by the famously popular 2021 Chevy Silverado pickup truck and its corporate cousin, the 2021 GMC Sierra, and outsold all Buick models put together. This was despite a downturn of nearly five percent compared with the same period in 2020.

However, in the rapidly growing mainstream compact crossovers market segment, the Equinox has fallen by one place to fourth behind the Nissan Rogue (and the Rogue Sport, which is included in the Nissan figures). It is also more than 100,000 units behind the segment-leading Toyota RAV4.
These figures suggest that the update can’t come soon enough, but another factor is also worth noting. Among GM models, the Equinox has been one of the most severely hit by the ongoing global semiconductor shortage. In May of this year, production of the Equinox at the CAMI plant in Ingersoll, Canada was estimated to be down by approximately 17,000 units for this reason alone.

This should be the end of cycle. This design has aged as well as it can and needs to be gone. Way too bland for the segment.
This is all driven by a CAFE credit for replacing halogens.
Isn’t CAFE for fuel economy? How would the light bulbs factor into that?
More efficient bulbs = less power used = less load on alternator = reduced fuel consumption.
Many items like LED headlights get an automatic credit, called an off-cycle credit, because they aren’t tested during the drive cycles. Other off-cycle credits include heated and ventilated seats and auto start-stop.
Huh, learn something new every day. Thanks.
The IIHS rated the 2019 Premier’s LED headlights as “marginal” (second lowest rating it can get but same rating as the halogen variant). It would be nice if the new 2022 headlights improve on visibility to get a Top Safety Pick+ rating.
I replaced all the incandescent bulbs on my 2009 Chevy Equinox with LEDS last year for less than $200. That is cheaper to do than buying a newer model.
If only the Equinox wasn’t powered by a pipsqueak 1.5 Turbo.
Looks like GM can enjoy losing even more sales.
2L Turbo is a pretty great engine in the equinox. The 1.5L not so great.
Does anyone knows if I can switch my 2021 Equinox front and back lights also for these new 2022 model? Kind of an upgrade. Does the metal frame and and sides are the same shape and one can make this upgrade without needing to change any body or hood parts?
