General Motors has started a customer satisfaction program to replace the second and third row seats in certain examples of the 2021 Chevy Suburban full-size SUV.
The problem: certain 2021 model year Chevy Suburban SUVs were delivered with cloth upholstered second and third row seats when they should have been delivered with vinyl second and third row seats. It is not clear how or why some vehicles received cloth rear seats instead of vinyl seats.
The hazards: obviously this problem does not pose any sort of safety hazard to the driver or vehicle occupants. However, customers that paid for a vinyl interior instead of a cloth interior will want the seats switched out, as the cloth seats are considered to be the cheaper and less high-end interior upholstery option available on the 2021 Chevy Suburban.
The fix: dealers will replace the cloth second and third row seats and back covers with vinyl equivalents. These repairs will be performed at no cost to the vehicle owner.
Affected components: second row seats, third row bench seats
Affected vehicles:
- 2021 Chevy Suburban
Number of affected vehicles: a total of 24 Chevrolet Suburban SUVs were shipped with cloth second and third row seats instead of vinyl ones.
Owners should: owners will be notified and instructed to make an appointment with the dealer to have the second and third row seats replaced. Owners of affected vehicles can also reach out to Chevrolet directly using the contact information included below with any other questions or concerns they may have. This customer satisfaction program was launched at the beginning of June 2021 and will run until June 30th, 2023.

Cloth used to be the upgrade from vinyl and then Leahter was a upgrade from cloth. I’m assuming these were ones with Leather but I guess leather is only in the front seats now. The newer vinyl or leatherette can easily pass for leather today.
So LS gets cloth and all other trims get leather. For leather, the front and second row are perforated for non-LT/Z71 trim. LT/Z71 is not perforated. There is no mention of what that third row material is, so it’s likely vinyl to match both leathers and cloth to match cloth.
I wonder if these 24 oddballs will be worth anything if the owners just keep them as is.
The 1WT model Suburban is all vinyl, but it seems odd that anyone in quality control would miss that a vehicle had vinyl fronts and all cloth in the back when it went out the door. The more likely thing that happened is that the fleet model, which is available with all cloth, vinyl, or leather – has an option for cloth front and vinyl 2nd and 3rd row, only available in Special Service Vehicles. My guess is that option got missed at assembly, because the vehicle could have left with all cloth (which would look normal – not raising any flags at QC), but would require the recall for fleet customers who wanted easier to clean vinyl in the back.
I am sorry, but cloth seats are superior to vinyl
Cloth is. I’m pretty sure the writer got it wrong. More likely these are vehicles ordered with leather, that ended up with standard rear cloth seats. Other than the upper trim High Country, when leather is ordered only the front seats are leather, with the rears covered in a high quality vinyl.
Cloth is standard in the 1FL fleet trim and base vinyl is an option. As CompactChevTruckGal says, cloth front vinyl rear is a legit configuration, RPO 5T5, often used for police vehicles.
It is until you have to clean prisoner puke, or worse, from them.
In the old days cloth was superior over vinyl…..the new vinyl holds up much better and actually is more durable then leather. It will look better for a longer time. Won’t crack or wear out like leather
That’s crap Tesla would pull. At least all the door panels match.
How can a car company make so much sh$t and still be in buisiness?
When working for Buick Motot Division Los Angeles Field Office many years ago we received a dealer complaint about a station wagon with incorrect trim. It was ordered correctly with cloth trim but received with cloth in front and vinyl in back. Back then it was considered a factory error. Someone up high must have thought it was a good idea because it became an ordering option for families with kids or dogs who didn’t want cloth back seats soiled by them (think ice cream and/or p**p)!
