GM Sells Down More Aged Chevy Silverado Medium Duty Inventory

Dealer inventory of the 2019 Chevy Silverado Medium Duty and 2020 Chevy Silverado Medium Duty pickup trucks in the United States is continuing to fall at a rate of approximately 500 units per month.

GM Authority last investigated the situation in early April. In round numbers, combined stocks of the 2019 and 2020 Chevy Silverado MD trucks at the end of March had reached 2,900 units, down from 3,400 a month before and from 4,000 at the close of 2020.

Chevy Silverado Medium Duty Inventory
2019 Silverado MD 2020 Silverado MD 2019 and 2020 combined
End of December 2020 1,000 3,000 4,000
End of February 2021 900 2,500 3,400
End of March 2021 700 2,200 2,900
End of April 2021 600 1,800 2,400

As of the end of April, the figure had come down to around 2,400 units, of which approximately two-thirds are the 2020 model year truck.

Quite obviously, Navistar – which builds the Chevy Silverado Medium Duty for GM – is no longer building the 2019 or 2020 year versions of the truck. Meanwhile, the 2021 model year truck is still in production, and will remain in production until the end of the 2021 calendar year. Dealer inventory of that vehicle has risen from 1,800 units to 2,300 units. Total inventory of all three model years has therefore remained constant at approximately 4,700 units – that’s well over half of the 7,419 sales achieved in the U.S. in 2020.

However, 2021 sales for the Chevy Silverado MD should be considerably higher. Sales in Q1 jumped by 82 percent to 1,887 units, and it will presumably be easier to buy vehicles for the rest of the year than it was in 2020, as a result of most states relaxing measures associated with the COVID-19 pandemic.

Despite their names, the Silverado Medium Duty trucks are not closely related to other models in the Chevy Silverado line-up. They ride on a unique platform developed jointly by General Motors and Navistar, while using cabs from the previous-generation, K2-based Silverado HD.

The only available engine as of this writing is the 6.6L V8 L5D turbodiesel Duramax motor, which makes 350 horsepower and 700 pound-feet of torque. However, a variant of the 6.6L V8 L8T gasoline engine, which made its debut in the 2020 Chevy Silverado HD and 2020 GMC Sierra HD, is expected to become available for the Silverado MD in the near future.

  3. Wonder what the fate of these will be, with Volkswagen (Tracton) acquiring Navistar… and Volkswagen having a product (truck/EV) development with Ford. 🤷‍♂️
