The General Motors design team has released a never-before-seen sketch of an unnamed futuristic Chevy truck – potentially giving us an idea of which direction the automaker’s pickup truck styling is headed in.
Details on this experimental Chevy truck sketch are slim. The sketch, which was shared on the official GM Design Instagram account this week, was completed by GM creative designer Kyle Minjae Shin. It has quite a different look than today’s Chevy Silverado 1500, incorporating horizontal grille slats, extremely thin C-shaped LED headlamps and a domed hood. Sharp-eyed readers may notice the sketch does not feature a Chevy bowtie logo, with a ‘Chevrolet’ script splayed across the leading edge of the hood in place of the bowtie. This truck also appears to have been envisioned as a performance off-road truck, featuring large tires and an integrated skid plate with tow hooks.
Kyle Minjae Shin has worked as an exterior designer at GM since he joined the company as an intern back in 2005, according to his LinkedIn page. He took on a roll with the Chevy trucks program in 2017 and subsequently began work on the Chevy Silverado ZH2 concept in 2018. The Silverado ZH2 concept, for readers who may not be aware, is an off-road-focused pickup truck with an experimental hydrogen powertrain. It was conceived as a potential military truck for the U.S. Army, but never made it past the concept phase due to an overall lack of interest.
Prior to his truck-focused position, Minjae Shin served as a catch-all exterior designer under the GM Global Advanced Architecture and Design arm of the company and as an exterior designer on the first-generation Chevy Bolt EV program.

NOT
I’d take the ZH2.
I think instead of going into time they need to go back in time and bring back the Square body 80s truck. I have a 87 square body shortbed 4×4 with that signature bow tie. I’d rather have a classic then flashy futuristic. A truck that is a truck.
I agree, the only thing is gm came out with the Boxy Shape of those trucks in the 2014 models, what I don’t agree with in this design is the tiny “Turn Signal ” style headlights or maybe those are turn signals…..it looks awful.
Oh, great, let’s use an extremely explosive fuel, hydrogen on a military vehicle. Which brain trust that this was a good idea???
One airship blows up and you think hydrogen is more dangerous than gasoline when in fact gasoline is more dangerous.
Hydrogen Facts:
The flames emit low radiant energy, which means they’re less likely to move to surrounding areas and spread fire.
It is non-toxic: leaks or spills do not contaminate the environment.
It is less combustible: gasoline in the air is flammable at a lower concentration limit of 1.4%, compared to hydrogen’s 4%. To put it another way, gasoline is two to three times more flammable in the air. The optimal mixture for hydrogen combustion is 29%—which in the real world is quite unusual, since hydrogen rises and will generally diffuse. Gasoline vapor’s optimal mixture for combustion is only 2%—a ratio that is very easy to reach.
I like it, but it needs a better interior.
(lol sorry couldn’t resist)
So he started on trucks in 17? Is that why the new hd’s look like crap lol? Went from the best looking duramax in 15-19, to the worst, 20+
Can we put the Bow tie back on the grill?
I like it’s sleek futuristic flow with enough hints of it’s past. Sign me up for to beta test that one!
Can someone tell me how this design is futuristic? All these design cues are on the current HD’s and it’s just a bad computer rendering. What happened to cool concept vehicles like the mid engine vettes of the last century. Those were truly designs ahead of its time.
After the hurt Ford F-150 and doge ram put on u guys
The only thing I’ve seen from Ford or Ram is headlights in my rear view mirror. Explain your tears of hate?
Looks like Chevys answer to the raptor oh it’s spelled dodge
Looks like a window air conditioner, wow what went wrong
If you want workhorse go back to 81-87 pickups with a 454. This so called thing will not work with most people. Everybody knows Chevrolet by the Bow tie.
Go back to 230 HP gas sucking big blocks? They were the workhorses of their time, but they have less HP and torque than most NA V6s now.
Also note that the 5.3 is the smallest V8 offered on Chevy trucks now has more hp and torque then the big 454… Or maybe you’d like your ’87 pickup with no a/c, no radio, roll-up windows, a four speed automatic and 11 or 12 mpg. Buy a RAM for looks if you want in the shop more then you drive it for recalls if only the mechanicals where as nice as the interior. I want a nice interior I will buy a Buick I want a truck I will buy a Chevy.
Hate the tiny mirrors. Does this guy even drive? Lacks shoulder room. The “Lone Star” edition will include a wider roof line to accommodate 2 Stetsons side by side. I do like most of it.
Okay so this is what the design team has come up with to battle RAM and Ford, as one response noted, it definitely looks like some kind of an appliance Really bad, stop with putting Chevrolet up front, and bring back the bow tie, that’s a start but you got a long way to go.
Not liking it too much. Put the bow tie back
on it.
Are we becoming vertically challenged in the near future? Seems like all these concepts have no headroom for us averaged sized drivers (6’5″ the rest of you are just short)
Just cuz new vehicles are going electric, doesnt mean they have to look “fUtuRiStIc”, just make a normal looking electric vehicle
Look futuristic but cab looks small and not so roomy.
Unless you make the truck wider.
May have a better center of gravity
Where are the headlights?
All that body looks inefficient and unpractical. Just looks like all kinds of places to get dented. Looks like by the time you open the clumsy door that takes up way to much space for any parking lot with lined spaces you are left with a person being 3″ wide or deep to get in and out. Hopefully the door by window is not slanted so you can hit your head getting in and out. Trucks are meant to haul stuff. This truck simply looks like a lot of wasted plastic. The headlights look totally stupid. Just imaging being oncoming traffic to that vehicle for a few miles wondering is that flying saucer discs that are evenly spaced? Go back to 70’s pickup designs. Vertical and squared offer carrying capacity.I’m a long haul trucker that drives GMC cargo van for personal use. Both useful. When burning fuel or gas, make it worthwhile.
Can’t we go back to the 1967 Chevrolets to the 1986 Chevrolets only give them better gas mileage and still make them durable enough to hit a deer, put it in the bed, and carry it home for supper, and add 4 doors so it can be a family truck, engine heard 15 minutes away, and the largest street legal tires put on the trucks…oh one last thing…..lift kit too
I think it is lacking in cartoon appeal and it needs a 4’x4′ bowtie on the grille.
Sorry, not a fan!
It’s like they are stuck in a design rut!
Maybe it’s time to get another designers perspective on how a truck can look!
Ummm, no thank you.
I see a bit of the late, great SSR…
No the USSR actually resembled the 47 thru 53 Chevy. The cross bars resemble a razor.
SSR. Dumb bass spell check that could be the problem computer designed as computers have as poor of taste as the Yahoo’s that progame them.
GM , loosen up and have some fun!
Look..i could design a way better looking chevy truck..the designers need to go back to what made chevy trucks..the best truck for all seasons..chevy need to get out of this transformer looking type truck that come to life and get back to big a truck that is a true chevy truck..that stands for chevy..chevy has allow ford and the rest of the truck world to dictate..what is a chevy truck..chevy truck has always been america first choice of truck by true americans who love this country and the american flag..come on chevy come back to the true american people..
Guaranteed Chevy will not build anything that looks that good. They never do.
So glad we can have a sketch of the future but can’t even get an interior sketch or pictures of the 2022 Silverado. SMH
Even in a bad rendering it’s got a stupid looking grill. And i appreciate gm for trying something different with the headlights, but let’s try making them not so bright first, and then make them look bad.
No, don’t care for it and STOP deleting my comment.s
61 Chevrolet Apache bow tie was on the hood and Chevrolet was on the grill. Looked good then would look good now.
There will never be such thing as a futuristic-looking truck as long as the government has a say in the dimensions.
Why not make them retro to look like the 67 to 72 models. They look much better than rain gutters running down the hood like that garbage. I read the other day about gm not drug trusting its employees.Obviously they have not been drug testing their styling artists for about 5 years. . What about a retro fronted to look like a 55 -57 pickup with (oh my god) a metal grille??
Drug testing they are no longer drug testing and it shows right thru the design department
Looks like a razor maybe the designer wishes his wife would shave?? Those big bug eye headlight pods look so retarted. The rain gutters on the hood are frigging ridiculous. And here I thought the 2020s were ugly. Not compared to this garbage. Ant to the poster ridiculing the older big blocks wipe the afterbirth out from behind your ears. A properly tuned bigblock will stomp the crap out of any LS engine .
SOS, where is Bob Lutz? GM has fewer brands now, why is it so hard to come up with good designs? Corvette, Escalade and Hummer got it right, keep it simple. The sketch is too busy where the hood meets the top of the grill. I like the ZH2 concept, the headlights, grill and hood intakes are a homer in. Clean up the lines on the lower fascia, simplify. Rugged look is AWESOME, Hummeresque! No more sissy trucks from Chevy, bow tie rules! Go General!
I thought Chevy built trucks for work!
If you want a sports car, go buy a Corvette or a Camaro.
If you want customers to buy the Silverado, stop the gadgets, like fuel management and build a real trucks that can get the job done.
Looks more like a spaceship instead of a truck, No thanks, I’ll keep my 08, don’t even like the ones out now to much but this is ridiculous!
This is gonna be the EV Silverado…
