General Motors is expanding access to the OnStar Guardian app, with anyone in the United States and Canada now eligible to sign up. The app was previously only available to General Motors vehicle owners.
OnStar Guardian is a subscription-based smartphone app with access to safety and security services. The app is available on compatible Apple and Android devices. The app first launched in June of 2020, and features things such as Mobile Crash Response, Roadside Assistance, Emergency Services, and Location Status.
Roadside Assistance services include things like a battery charge, lockout, flat tire change, or fuel delivery, while onboard sensors in the phone are used to detect a vehicle crash and alert an Emergency-Certified OnStar Advisor. The Location Status feature is expected to launch this month, and will provide things like destination departure and arrivals.
The OnStar Guardian app is designed to provide peace of mind, with advisors on call 24 hours a day, seven days a week. What’s more, customers can share features with others by adding up to seven additional people through the My Family feature of the app.
“We find that so many of our members have a hesitation in terms of pressing the 911 buttons on their phone to solicit help from emergency services,” said the Head of OnStar Guardian, GM Global Innovation, Jeff Haase. “Our advisors are there to help triage the situation so you can solicit the help of an OnStar advisor to monitor the situation and to let them know what’s going on, and if something happens, they can make the decision on dispatching somebody to your location if the need arises.”
OnStar Guardian is currently available to OnStar members enrolled in a Safety & Security plan, but for non-GM owners, a standalone subscription plan is now available. The OnStar Guardian is available to download through the Apple App Store and Google Play. Plan pricing is available at the OnStar website.
